I can't speak to MJ's motivations, but I like having players on the team with whom I share something in common. School, hometown, ethnic background. The fragrance comments are bizarre, especially now that we know who wrote them.
Tsai would suggest his mom's family came from Taiwan. That (common) family name is spelled Cai on the mainland.
To anyone asking why it matters, I’d ask why it matters that it matters. Or, why does it matter if it matters that it matters.
As an Asian-American, I am always interested in Asian-Americans who make it to the pro athlete level. Role model for me, my kids, my grandkids.
When my kids were little, we visited a Jewish athletes museum in DC (I'm not sure it's still there). It was basically one room, and mostly Sandy Koufax. I'm not sure the Quakes have had a Jewish player since Jeff Agoos?
Beau has played pretty beau beaucoup temps sette saison pour les Tremblemants de Terre! I mean he's not gonna be the next thing in the EPL but he is something that was missing from the Quakes' attack last season and is definitely a serviceable MLS midfielder.
If there's a Jewish athletes' agents museum I figure it'd probably be a skosh larger... I'm not aware of any.
A local musician friend of mine is an indirect relation (like a step-uncle, I believe), and he confirmed that Beau's mom is of Chinese descent.
Wait a minute! That museum ignored The Bagel Brothers of 1970s-80s USTA tennis? Harold Solomon and Eddie Dibbs! Tremendous doubles team! Would beat teams 6-0, 6-0, which is why they earned that nickname, besides being Jewish.
Never heard of them! Apparently Dibbs was not Jewish, though Solomon was, but bagels cut across all cultures.
Jewish athletes? Ahem... And, Santa Clara Swim Club and Santa Clara High School. Besides the 7 gold medals in the '72 Olympics, while at Santa Clara High School, "During his four years there, Spitz held national high school records in every stroke and in every distance." LOL.
Born in Modesto I think but lived in Hawaii and moved here to train. I guess Santa Clara Swim Club was the shyte back in those days. I used to ride my bike to the Santa Clara Public Library back in the day to check out LPs. I had no idea at that time that just behind the library was a world class swim center where Mark Spitz and many other great swimmers trained. "Recognized throughout the world as a premier training center, the Santa Clara swim club has produced more International Swimming Hall of Fame swimmers than any other swim club on earth."
Yes, i recall that Santa Clara was a hotbed of swimming. Wonder what happened that caused them to fall out of prominence.
For one thing, a lack of maintenance and investment in the international swim center has resulted in it no longer being a top-tier venue. The city really screwed the pooch on this one.
This is interesting because Taiwan's national team has started recruiting dual nationals from the US in the last few years. Currently Christopher Tiao (NYCFC II) is their starting left wingback, and their most recent Asian Cup qualifying squad also included Jason Hsu (UC Davis) and Derrek Chan (Mülheimer FC in the German 5th tier).
Leroux team of the week vs Inter Miami The stars from Matchday 13. ⭐️📝: https://t.co/ijUfYIL6Rn pic.twitter.com/RqX1NcBDYf— Major League Soccer (@MLS) May 15, 2025
Unfortunately for the Taiwanese program Beau is probably way too good. If anything it wouldn’t be a surprise if Pochettino took a look at him soon.
While I am glad to see his growth, I am a little scared of him going to the USMNT camp. We once had a promising young central midfielder who was not the same after the invite. I know there is no correlation. Snakebitten or superstitious.
How lucky are we to have Leroux in the fold...he had a great game against Miami...he continues to exceed expectations game after game...really unbelievable progression. Just my two cents, he's not ready for nats ball yet, and his speed is just barely at low international level...the same issue that plagued Yueill. Although imo, Leroux is quicker than Yueill, but not enough to get consistent separation at the international level...which I'm absolutely fine with...hopefully he stays with the Quakes for at least 3-4 years...he moves the ball so well... and he hasn't even hit his peak yet.
