I don't know if Tarbell regressed, he never significantly improved. Seems like he rarely has his feet set at critical times...causes him to be late to react...looks like stoppable shots from outside the box always catch him by surprise...he looks absolutely planted at times...big problem.
Maybe he needs a great GK coach like the one Bingham had? I forgot his name....he may chime in to the boards though now that he is gone....
I would say Tarbell has regressed or is having a bad year or in a slump. One way to measure keeper in terms of shot stopping is GA-xGA. A negative number means you are stopping shots more shots than expected and a positive number means you are allowing more goals than expected. Last year Tarbs was kind of mid-pack and his number was roughly even. This year it is over 4 and he is last in the league. Of course that is just shot stopping, which is generally regarded as a stronger part of Tarbell's game. BTW last year Tim Melia had an astonishing -13-something. The closest second was -4-something.
Tim Hanley, who coached all the greatest goalkeepers in MLS history (Joe Cannon, Jon Busch, Pat Onstad, etc.
This is true, but all the same, our GKs always had terrible distribution, excepting JB’s early days with us. Go Quakes!! Fire Blank Stahre! - Mark
I don’t argue that. It did seem to be a weakness. I’m saying that apparently he kept the rest of their game above water, cuz without him those 2 guys are drowning...
That does appear to be the case. And hey, I like Tim. His pre-match analysis of Quakes games and our oppenents in ‘08 was right on the money. I think Tim would make a good head coach, and I’ve suggested that idea before. Maybe Tarbell will get better and gain confidence when Guram shows up and starts managing the back line better. Go Quakes!! - Mark
Neither Tarbell or his coach looked smart against Colorado last night.....I did see one good save though....
This is good news, because the last time the Quakes finished last in MLS (save for the resurrection year of 2008) was 2000, and we all know what happened the next year. MLS Cup in 2019?
"NEWS: Earthquakes Acquire GAM in Trade with Columbus Crew SC" (SJEarthquakes.com - Wednesday, 2/19/20) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Good deal. If Tarbell is to resurrect his once promising career a change of scenery would be a good way to start. Also, this reduces our congestion at the GK position and it gives us some cash to play with. Very nice indeed. Go Quakes!! Fisher OUT!! - Mark
Yet again another player is traded away for cap money. Jesse sure does have an aversion for bringing in MLS players from other teams. Dominic Oduro for 1/3 of the season is the only one since he’s been GM.
