Quakes are 3rd in the MLS Power Rankings, ahead of Miami and Nashville (wait I thought Espinoza *had to* leave to play on a good team), and behind Vancouver, whom we beat at their place. Enjoy it while you can, folks.

A recent Soccerwise podcast with David Gass and Doyle had a fairly lengthy discussion of the Quakes post 3-0 win over San Diego. I think it's the 1st game they covered from last weekend. Lots of praise for Niko but also Ricketts, who was kind of the unsung hero of the game. Goss said he was a "game changer". I didn't remember this but they talked about how Ricketts started the PK / red play with a quick restart. And then he knocked down the ball to Beau, which Beau turned into the 3rd goal with the cross to Judd.

Another interesting thing is that Goss interviewed Munie and previewed the matchup with San Diego last week, and he said did so because the team actually reached out to him. Interesting that the marketing team would be pushing the team in the podcast world with a kind of "Hey look at us, we're for real. Give us some free pub!".

 

I will never fault Espinoza. He's not an idiot and saw how under Fisher the entire organization looked a hot mess. A run of six games, or even a season is not enough to erase 18 years of criminally incompetent ownership.

 

I’m not faulting Espinoza either. I’m calling into question the idea that Espinoza left because he wanted to win or the org was bad, etc. My theory is that he didn’t like playing for Bruce. Didn’t like playing wingback and didn’t like how he treated Espinoza’s friend and countryman Hernán. Also when he re-signed with the Quakes in mid-2023 it was about as effusive of a “I love my club / city” quote that you’ll ever see. What changed since then? :thinkingemoji

Of course none of us know for sure why he left, but it wasn’t the money.

 

The Quakes should try to make 4.08 day a thing. That’s actually a good idea.

Cristian left for several reasons, it wasn’t one thing.
1, the Money! He has a family, so more money is good, and he’s nearing retirement age.
2, the Quakes have sucked for years. ¿Why would he think we might get better now?
3, he didn’t like playing for Bruce.
4, Bruce wanted a much younger team. Cristian had to notice that.

No order on these. I think it was the collective weight of these issues.
