Some comments from Graber on the state of the Quakes ownership and sale: Q: Both the San Jose Earthquakes and the Vancouver Whitecaps have been on the market for extended periods. How would you characterize demand for those franchises? GRABER: Getting the right owner for a team is a top priority. San Jose is not driven by a particular timetable. It’s a great market, and I’m very confident that the team will have a new owner, or John Fisher will bring in a partner. The fact that we’re not willing to just have anybody come in and own a team is indicative of how important ownership is. He sounds generally optimistic, and is supportive of the market. But as I've been saying, we'd better cool the jets and not expect that the change is imminent, and we may not be done with Fish yet. This may take some time. As for Vancouver, sounds like the same old crap - the stadium situation is not "economically viable", trying to coerce a municipality to pony up public funds for a stadium, etc. Sounds vaguely familiar. As it relates to Vancouver, there remains a really large gap between what the club deserves and the current scheduling and economic dynamic that we have at BC Place. It’s untenable, as I’ve said before, for a major league club to not be able to play home games in their market for what could be several dates this year. The team has done everything they can to invest in a club fans can be proud of, and I’m not quite sure we’ve been seeing the same level of public support for the club that exists for other teams in the market and other MLS clubs. So, we’ll continue to support the club as they pursue a solution in Vancouver, but meaningful progress has to be made on a long-term stadium solution, and timing is of the essence. https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.c...ber-qa-world-cup-media-rights-and-succession/
What is so terrible about BC Place by the way? I know they have to share it with the CFL team, but seems like they've only had scheduling issues a few times in the last 3 years or so. And as for revenue, apparently the city is willing to forego their share. So what's left? Not even "luxury boxes"? The turf (fixable)? It's also in the heart of downtown Vancouver and their attendance is pretty good (13th, averaging almost 22k).
What else is he supposed to say? Things aren't going well and we're thinking about moving the team again?
Well, he kind of implied that Vancouver might need to be moved because the situation is "untenable", so...

It's funny - over the years I've definitely discarded enough Quakes-related stuff to fill a wing in a museum.
On the latest Soccerwise podcast with Matt Doyle and friends, they did a little segment on the Quakes. They concluded that the Quakes are good, and Doyle used the "addition by subtraction" line. That got me thinking. If the guys on the bench last year who are now starting, and there are a *lot* (Roberts, Ricketts, Niko, Bouda, Judd, Benji, Beau, etc.) were *better* than the guys that were starting, is there any chance that we can find the guy who made the decision to keep the *better* players on the bench last year!? 'Cause if we can, then heads oughta roll!

They’re mostly young and therefore the additional year of seasoning makes a big difference. For example, Roberts, like Celebrini, was a rookie last year. Surprise, both better as a sophomore.
I don’t believe it’s a step function like that - that the players suddenly got better during the offseason. And some of these guys have been in the league of years: Judd, Benji, Bouda, etc. If they progressed it was during last season, in some steady fashion, meaning at some last year they were rest to start. And maybe if they did we wouldn’t have sputtered out in the 2nd half of the season. I just want to find the guy who was responsible for those decisions!
