Looked like Darwin Nunez was the main protagonist. I mean he was all in throwing punches right and left in the stands. He was completely out of control. Took several policemen to try to contain him. Maybe if he'd had converted one of his many chances he'd have been in a better mood?
Wow Nunez, wonder what set this off... pic.twitter.com/zgMRYf3DNm— Out Of Context Football (@nocontextfooty) July 11, 2024 Darwin Nunez vs drunk Colombian fans pic.twitter.com/0M6TE2duSJ— شَارِد (@sharid000) July 11, 2024 1811297106465861659 is not a valid tweet id Headshot to Nunez pic.twitter.com/R6WlHcnuee— شَارِد (@sharid000) July 11, 2024 Uruguay players went to the stands to fight Colombian fans after they lost the semifinals 😱😱😱 pic.twitter.com/UUafIVqJzI— Viral vibes (@viralvibes__) July 11, 2024
Darwin Núñez consoling his son after the altercation that took place at full time v Colombia. Supposedly drunk Colombia fans ‘avalanched’ the families of the Uruguayan players which is when Darwin & other players went up to the stands to fight them. pic.twitter.com/0zsK7xy1PH— LFC Transfer Room (@LFCTransferRoom) July 11, 2024 After defeat to Colombia, Uruguayan players entered the stands at Bank of America Stadium and began to throw punches. Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez amongst those at the forefront. pic.twitter.com/VE3unKObSa— Kyle Bonn (@the_bonnfire) July 11, 2024 This footage shows a bit clearer what happened between Darwin Nuñez and the Colombian fans. pic.twitter.com/AHKjDGIj42— Uruguay Football ENG (@UruguayFootENG) July 11, 2024
I know that there’s going to be a lot of “we were just protecting our families” and “security needed to be a lot better” kinds of alibis but there has to be a pretty hefty suspension for Ruiz right? He was totally out control just jumping in there throwing punches.
The Uruguayans are saying that their families were involved and that security was poor. That’s why I put it in quotes. It doesn’t have to do with what I believe. I don’t know the details of what happened.
Because I don’t believe it’s OK for a player to jump in the stands and start throwing punches under any circumstances..
“Any circumstances” is pretty broad and categorical. So you don’t believe in the concept of self-defense?
That doesn’t answer my question. But in answer to yours, it appears he was provoked. None of us know the details. I’m withholding judgment but you’re ready to issue a suspension.
Suarez started the fight on the field, because he didn't like the way a Colombian player supposedly "overly celebrated". Then each team's fans joined in with the fighting. Unfortunately, the fans fighting was around players families, who had no security, so Uruguay players jumped to the rescue. Darwin did take a bit far with the chair-swinging tho, since at that point the players families had been rescued .
I missed the chair-swinging but did see him up in the stands throwing punches (and landed one I think). I saw several security personnel trying to secure him. But yeah, seems like the root cause is poor security. I listened to the "Hella Football" podcast and they were implying that the tournament, run by CONMEBOL, is a bit if a logistical mess just to do the basic things they were doing like trying to secure a press pass.
i can’t believe I missed this thread almost the entire Copa! Oh well The post-game Incident was a terrible shame, but I thought the URU vs COL game was the most insane game I’d seen for a long time. Holding off URU and Luis Suarez while a man down for what almost 60 mins? I was yelling so much during that game… thought it highly entertaining.
This was Nunez's attempt to throw a chair into the stands. I guess this is after he came down. Looks like the security person got a hand on it and it fell a bit short of its intended target. https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/com...=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Well, i never expected much from them in the Copa. Canada has gone further, but to me it comes down to luck. I don’t feel Jesse is any better of a coach than Gregg, and I think CANMNT are more athletic than our guys. And maybe CANMNT have more to play for, in that they have a lot of immigrants or sons of immigrants.
I think it was after the 2018 failure to qualify — don’t you remember when Men in Blazers were lamenting how USMNT could only win the Middle Class World Cup? That pay-to-play resulted in too many of our players coming from the middle class instead of the lower economic class, where players have to really fight to excel. They also highlighted the new immigrant thing… Did you forget all that already?
