USA at Copa America: • 1993 (Bora Milutinovic): Last out of 12 teams when it blew 3-0 lead against Venezuela and had to settle for a 3-3 tie in the group finale. • 1995 (Steve Sampson): Fourth after beating Chile (2-1) and Argentina (3-0!) in group play and Mexico in a quarterfinal shootout. • 2007 (Bob Bradley): Last again after losing all three group matches with a “B” team in Venezuela. (The “A” team won the Gold Cup.) • 2016 (Jurgen Klinsmann): Fourth after being blown out by Argentina in the semifinals and losing to Colombia (for a second time) in the third-place game.
Yes. DT Daniel Passarella thinking the USA were pushovers benched most of the starters except for Gabriel Batistuta and another one player I forget who. Alexi Lalas after having completed his first full season in the Serie A for Padova, where he helped save them from relegation, marked Batigol out of the game. Then, Frank Klopas scored in the 20'the minute, Lalas in the 31st and Wynalda in the 58the and the USA stunned Argentina 3-0. Maradona, was by then retired and stated the USA"s performance was a joy to watch. The move backfired because Argentina faced Brazil in the second round and USA played Mexico who they knew very well and both Brazil and the USA won their games, and they faced each other in the semifinal of the tournament. It was a years before the start of MLS and a great time for the USMNT. Then the program went to pot after that.
Canada looked great last night. Finishing was poor on both sides but it could have been 4 to 4 game pretty easily.
the field in Atlanta, which apparently they only installed a couple of days ago, fell apart and looked like crap, Did not get good reviews from either Argentina or Canada. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ionel-Scaloni-GRASS-Atlanta-Copa-America.html
Total surprise that laying new grass 2 days before a game over a plastic field would have issues...and people running these tournaments are suppose to be professionals.
I'm supposed to go to the Ecuador Venezuela game this afternoon at Levi's. If I never post again, you can safely assume I died of heat stroke.
Not sure, but if not, definitely coming of the bench. He always gets minutes in the NT one way ore the other. He started their last friendly before the Copa.
After watching some of that Belgium game, the crowd at Levi’s for this one looks pretty sparse. that atmosphere for Belgium vs Romania was incredible.
It was a sparse crowd, but still a great and passionate atmosphere. There was an early red card, which had me worried that the game would be a slog, but it ended up being really exciting. Gruezo came on at 62' with Ecuador up 1-0. Guess what happened next? Venezuela goals at 64' and 74', and it was over. By the way, the US had better effing bring it, because these South American teams want to win so badly. There was a serious edge to the whole game.
