An article about our goalkeeper coach, Carlos Roa. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/argentina-hero-carlos-roa-explains-21888586 " Roa was the man who knocked England out of the 1998 World Cup with saves from Paul Ince and David Batty when a dramatic night in St Etienne was decided by a penalty shoot-out. He was then earmarked as Peter Schmeichel’s replacement by Sir Alex Ferguson after United won the Treble the following year. But Roa, a devout Seventh-day Adventist, retired from football because he believed in a prediction that the world was about to end."
Not sure if this was posted in another thread. Watched ESPNFC last night (Friday's edition), and it was suggested by Hercules Gomez and Ale Moreno that the MLS season might be cancelled. The thinking being MLS TV revenue is so abysmal ($90 million annually) compared to the NBA/NFL ($2-5 BILLION annually) that having games behind closed doors wouldn't be worth it (a money looser). Apparently the vast majority of MLS's revenue comes from game day attendance (ticket sales, concessions, merchandise, sponsorships). I would not want to see that happen, but the logic behind potentially cancelling the season does make sense. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that...
I assume that if fans can't attend then they will watch so the 90M should have significant upside. They problem might be straight overload of sports as all nation's will try to get going as fast a possible. In the US you could have MLS, baseball, nba, hockey, Nascar and golf at at once and compressed. I'm sure I forget some sport
The Gap is running out of money. I wonder if this will impact Fisher's operation of the Quakes and the A's in any way. https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/23/business/gap-financials-coronavirus/index.html " Gap Inc. is rapidly burning through cash as its stores remain shut during the coronavirus pandemic. The clothing company said its future is uncertain if it doesn't get the help it needs to keep its business operational. The company issued a dire warning in a regulatory filing Thursday that $1 billion in cash has evaporated from its accounts since February. Gap said it might have as little as $750 million in the bank as early as next week."
The set of tequila arrived disguised in a Staples box. Looks as though they sent some extras along with the alcohol, but I haven't been offered a close-up yet.
5 subs! https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52443195 " Teams will be given "temporary dispensation" to make five substitutions to help with the congested schedule they could face when the season resumes, Fifa has proposed. Most leagues around the world have been halted by the coronavirus pandemic. The dispensation can be implemented by organisers for competitions scheduled until the end of the 2021 season."
Just in from my rep: As we planned for the 2020 season, we looked forward to winning matches, enjoying one last year with Chris Wondolowski scoring goals and watching a bunch of Matias Almeyda sideline celebrations. Our focus has quickly shifted from the on-field performance and creating an outstanding stadium experience, to making sure our community is healthy. We hope that you are safe and well. MLS announced recently that our season is postponed until at least June 8 in accordance with guidance from our federal and local health authorities. We are Silicon Valley Strong and we are all making tremendous strides to bend the curve. Once we have approval from the governing bodies, we will return to Earthquakes Stadium and do what we love most. Currently, our goal is to play as many matches as possible this season. If a match is officially cancelled for the 2020 season or played without fans, we will apply credit to your account for those matches, which you can use toward your 2021 season tickets or future Quakes experiences. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to to your account service representative, Audie Amirkiai, at aamirkiai@sjearthquakes.com or (408) 556-7718, and we will find the best solution for you, including a refund for the value of the cancelled matches. We recognize that this is a difficult time and our goal is to support you in the best way possible. During this time while games are not being played, we will keep supporting our local community as much as we can. We miss seeing you at the stadium and want to see you again as soon as it is safe to host matches. We are excited about the team we have on the field and the support that we have off it. We know that good times are ahead. Thank you for your support and stay safe.
Did golf even need to be suspended? Pretty easy to adhere to social distancing practices if you just eliminate the crowed (who don't add much to the viewing experience anyway).
Ok, chance to vote on your favorite Quakes jersey from 2014-2020. I picked the 2014-2016 primary since it most resembled our traditional blue/black/blue color scheme. https://www.centerlinesoccer.com/2020/5/4/21244970/vote-best-san-jose-earthquakes-jersey-2014-20
