Ada Hegerberg was supposed to play, but had some minor problems and sat this game out to be fit for the France game on Tuesday. Synne Jensen made a rare starting appearance instead. Overall a subpar performance by Norway against Iceland who are usually strong at home. Their main stadium Laugardalsvöllur is under major upgrade, so this match was played at a small venue with only 1000 spectators and astroturf. It was also very windy this day which complicated things. Qualitywise it was a poor match, but the best chances fell to Iceland.
I watched a game at that stadium when I was in Iceland last year, I was surprised they didn't play in Kopavogsvollur which is bigger and more of a proper stadium.
Final of the U23 Euro tournament Norway 0 - 0 Germany Germany won 6-5 on penalties. The first edition of this tournament ends with second place for Norway. This competition has been running like a regular league format for a long time and the finals were held in Spain during the weekend. Norway beat Italy in the semi-finals on penalties, also after a goalless draw. Norway's line-up in the final: Sunniva Skoglund - Mia Authen, Emilie Bragstad, Oda Johansen, Josefine Birkelund - Emilie Østerås, Noor Eckhoff, Julie Jorde, Julie Blakstad (c) - Thea Kyvåg, Iris Omarsdottir.
FT: Norway 0-2 France Deserved win for France, apart from a French goalkeeper blunder and then a nice shot by Terland from distance which forced a save in the first half and Maanum hitting the crossbar in the second half, Norway didn't create much and most of the midfield was completely isolated without Reiten. Saevik was subbed off after 20 minutes following a knock and Fiskerstrand had to get treatment following a head collision with the post. Apart from the two goals, France also hit the post in the first half and the crossbar in the second. Highlights to follow...

There is no VAR in Toppserien so the goal stood. LSK should have beaten Røa comprehensively, but hit the posts a number of times and missed several times 1v1 vs the goalkeeper and Røa ended up converting their few chances instead. Hønefoss have been a nice addition to the league and put up a good fight against Rosenborg despite losing. Brann look solid as Anna Aahjem scored a hat-trick before half-time. New matchday coming up already on Wednesday. Full game against Iceland in Norwegian (NRK). I wasn't able to watch it so I can't comment much but if it weren't for a 83th minute own goal by Iceland, Norway would have lost.
FT: Switzerland 0-1 Norway Boe Risa scored in the 4th minute and the scoreline stayed the same until the end. They avoid third place and a relegation play-off in October and this win in Sion is also a good test ahead of the Euro game against Switzerland in Basel in less than a month which I will be attending. Highlights to follow!
The big story in Norwegian woso in recent weeks is the positive doping tests of eight players from Vålerenga and LSK Kvinner. The banned substance DMBA was found in these tests. The names of the players are still unknown.
Nobody pleads guilty. Everybody seems confused about how they failed the drug test. It's interesting that players from both teams (Vålerenga and LSK) failed the test in the same match and for the same substance.
What a weird context to be taking this substance if it's on purpose. It's not like it happened in a UWCL semi-final or something.
It's been a long time since the last update from Toppserien. Yesterday was the penultimate round before the Euros break. Wolfsburg have signed Thea Bjelde from Vålerenga. A solid Norwegian contingent is being built in the Autostadt at the moment. Guro Bergsvand arrives from Brighton, Smilla Vallotto is playing for Switzerland and signed from Hammarby, but grew up in Norway and Justine Kielland has been in Wolfsburg for a year already.
Sophie Roman Haug's omission is the most talked about after the squad was published, but also the way Gemma Grainger has overlooked many top performing Norwegians in Damallsvenskan. She doesn't seem to rate the Swedish league very much. Hammarby have a bunch of Norwegians doing well (Julie Blakstad, Vilde Hasund, Emilie Joramo etc.), but only Emilie Woldvik from Rosengård has been selected.
Smilla Valloto who represents Switzerland but is half-Norwegian and plays for Hammarby was very critical of Grainger and basically said that she doesn't seem to pay attention at all to the Swedish league and is making bad choices with the roster. With that being said, apart from Blakstad, the other Norwegians like Hasund and Joramo but also Bragstad and Tandberg were never regular call-ups even under previous coaches and none of them have more than 3-4 caps at most with the Norwegian team so far. Only Josendal has several caps and was called-up several times before.
