This is a disappointing result considering that this Austria is nothing special and now Norway have to get something from their games against France and Portugal especially. Interesting to note that Tuva Hansen is no longer a starter for Norway or for her club Bayern.
Game highlights, no commentary. Judging by the highlights alone, Norway should have won at least 4-1. They don't show Maanum's disallowed goal but I would love to see a replay of it.
Too early to tell, I guess. It’s only been one matchday in the Bundesliga. She might have had some fitness issues for not starting for either team. The Maanum offside goal comes after 23 minutes on that full match video (20:15 on the match clock). Looking at it again, I might be tempted to agree with the lineswoman after all. But there is not a good camera angle available.
Not only is there not a good camera angle but there is no VAR whatsover in the Women's Nations League games which to me is incomprehensible. Denmark got away with a clear handball yesterday in their game against Germany because there wasn't any VAR. It wouldn't have changed much to the outcome of that match but still here's a game where Norway maybe could have won if VAR had been used.
Also, on a sidenote, Engen was voted best player of the game. A bit surprising considering that for the past 1-2 years she's often been Norway's worst player.
I'm prone to looking up old matches and stats on occasion and almost always find interesting bits. Tonight I came across the fact that Maren Mjelde will pass Bente Nordby's cap total of 172 before the end of the year, putting her in the top 3. She's sitting at 170 now. Of the current crop of players, the next closest player is Graham Hansen with 103, Haavi with 101, Reiten with 85 and, funny enough, Hegerberg with 78. (Even after all the time spent away.) I'm probably just tired, but does it feel like there's a bit of a generational gap there?
Yes, there is a gap. Maren Mjelde is something like five or six years older than the next group of experienced key players (Reiten, CGH, Ada). Most players around the same age as Mjelde, or slightly younger, are out of the picture for various reasons. Isabell Herlovsen (133 caps) retired in 2019. Elise Thorsnes (130) is still playing, but no longer selected. The same goes for Kristine Minde (108), who hasn’t been selected since 2020. She has since given birth and is still playing for Rosenborg though. Emilie Haavi (101) was not selected this time, could return later.
Mjelde has been around for longer because she's older therefore it's normal she has more caps. What would be weird if she had 100 caps and Reiten or Hegerberg had over 150.
Caro Hansen is out for the Portugal match with a thigh injury She was tested in training today, but don't want to gamble further and make it worse. Back to Barcelona for rehab.
My point was what Bauser touched on ... There should really be at least 5-6 active players with caps in between that of Mjelde and CGH. Going through the list, you can see the various generations and those that played together having similar numbers. Coaching changes? Life priorities? National team duty being less valued than club duties? Random occurrence? Unfortunately, you can feel that experience missing from the field at times.
It doesn't help that several generation of players over the years had issues with the NFF leading to them retiring early or not playing (being capped) as much as they could have. There was a good article explaining this during the World Cup.
It's gonna be a loooong year. Portugal 3 - Norway 2 5 yellows for Norway. Roman Haug out with a very bloody broken nose early on. https://www.nrk.no/sport/stjernespi...spertene-mener-norge-ble-bortdomt-1.16572650?
An abject performance last night. Norway’s WNT is in crisis. Only two wins in eleven matches in all of 2023, with two matches coming up against France in October not likely to improve that record. Sophie Haug out with a broken nose and additional facial injuries after only three minutes after collision with the Portuguese goalkeeper, who also had to be subbed out. Highlights from last night. What do you think of the two penalty calls? Terland had a goal disallowed for offside which looked more dubious than the one we had against Austria. Not included in the clip.
The first penalty call was very very soft. the other one was embellished by the FW but I can see the foul, the first one not so much (also the ball was anyway safely in GK's hands, I would have anyway let it go at the ref's place). Frankly the action of Portugal's 1st goal was much more likely to have a PK-worthy foul in it, but the ref anyway correctly gave the advantage there (and Portugal indeed scored). Anyway, apart from the single details of this match, it's clear that Portugal are in the rising and Norway are declining: you have to look no further than their respective WWC performances to gauge it; think at Norway vs Japan (as much as I hate to admit it, Japan could have taken a sense of false confidence from that match ) or at USA vs Portugal. Portugal's coach look quite self-condident these days: it could be an impression made by his smile and his prominent chin or it could just be that he knows that the long work of development of his team has reached a point where they can basically have their chance vs almost any other team in women's football.
I saw on UEFA page that Mikalsen got a yellow card for the first penalty so referee saw it definitely wrong. It was a slight push by Hansen against Silva but Silva before had missed the ball and Hansen played the ball against the heel of Silva. No penalty for me. Second penalty is clear. Contact by Harviken on Amados leg.
What I find particularly sad is that Norway conceeded 2 goals from penalty kicks albeit the first penalty was a body check and extremely harsh. I'll be going to Austria in December to watch them, I'm hoping to see an improvement by than because this is not good enough. 1 point in 2 games against Austria and Portugal so far, it should have been at least 4.
Clearly not in an offside position. Engen was again voted Norway's best player. Am I missing something?

Saw a picture of a mural today depicting the three Valeranga goalkeepers, anyone knows where it is in Oslo?
1st leg of the UWCL qualifiers last night. The last hurdle before the coveted group stage. Real Madrid 2 – 1 Vålerenga Zornosa 4, Galvez 44 --- Rogic 27 I didn’t expect an out of form and injury-riddled Vålerenga to have any chance against Real Madrid, so with that in mind a narrow away defeat keeps the tie alive before the return leg. Real had most of the possession of course, but Vålerenga had some dangerous counter-attacks. If they can get Sævik and Thomsen ready for the home match, an upset could be within reach. Glasgow City 0 – 4 Brann Engesvik 5, 39, Kielland 13, Bratberg Lund 86 A surprisingly easy win in Scotland, but Brann under new coach Martin Ho are a different team than earlier this season. Some high quality goals were scored in this match. Hoping to find videos later.
TOPPSERIEN 2023 – Matchday 23 Arna Bjørnar 0 – 4 Brann Engesvik 10, Østenstad 68, Renmark 82, Eikeland 89 Rosenborg 1 – 1 Stabæk Andreassen 35 --- Kruse 9 Røa 0 – 1 LSK Kvinner Dirdal 14 Vålerenga 1 – 0 Avaldsnes Brekken 44 Åsane 1 – 1 Lyn Sunde 16 --- Skjelstad Jensen 90 The title race just became more intense with four rounds to go. Rosenborg surprisingly dropped points at home to Stabæk, where as Vålerenga narrowly beat bottom team Avaldsnes after an unconvincing and lacklustre performance. I doubt Real Madrid were scared if they scouted this game.
