Nick announces he's retiring at the end of the season. Thank you for everything. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/ftn2OmncLn— Nick Rimando (@NickRimando) March 1, 2019
So we have a whole season to get his statue ready for the unveiling next year. Something like this. Or this save on Landycakes Donovan.
Watching this video makes me laugh at all the smoke that Dunny is preaching about this RSL being the deepest they have ever been. This is the roster from the MLS cup in 2009. I would take this starting lineup head to head over the RSL team we have today. In my estimation there is only possibly two positions that are "improved" from 2009 and that would be Rusnak in one of the MF positions and Damir in another but overall not much else. REAL SALT LAKE: GK 18 Nick Rimando 2009 DF 4 Jámison Olave 2009 DF 6 Nat Borchers 2009 DF 3 Robbie Russell 2009 DF 17 Chris Wingert 2009 MF 11 Javier Morales 22' 2009 MF 5 Kyle Beckerman (c) 2009 MF 77 Andy Williams 2019 MF 8 Will Johnson 14' 46' 2019 FW 9 Yura Movsisyan 75' 2009 FW 10 Robbie Findley 2009 Substitutes: GK 1 Chris Seitz DF 2 Tony Beltran MF 12 Jean Alexandre MF 20 Ned Grabavoy 46' MF 84 Clint Mathis 22' FW 16 Fabián Espíndola 75' FW 19 Pablo Campos
Yes, although it wasn't the most athletic save, it set RSL up to win the MLS Cup. I didn't want to watch the whole thing since I knew all the suspense was the shootout and I jumped ahead to where Landycake's shot went over the goal, a la Roberto Baggio.
While I dont agree with permanent retiring numbers in soccer I do believe Nick's name and number need to be up on the stadium. Also he should be given a summer testimonial match. Who should be the visiting team?
Remember when a prominent poster on this forum was really down on Nick and wanted him benched in favor of Chris Seitz? I think it was lakeboy. Good times.
It's a double win. We get to celebrate Nick, and we get to plan ahead and move on - while he's still starting quality. Maybe we'll see a rejuvenated Kyle...but he plays so many minutes on feet that are chronically sore...
Somebody has started a change.org petition to get the goalkeeper of the year trophy named after Rimando. The irony is that Nick has never actually won the award. For this reason alone, I want it to happen.
I've been saying this for years. Year in/year out, Rimando has been in the conversation for the award and sometimes a surprise non-winner. The righteous thing to do is name it after him as a 'career of excellence' award.
If they named the MVP trophy after Landycakes, they can name the goalkeeper of the year trophy after Rimando.
A summer testimonial would be very good. You don't even need to bring in another "team", just invite players/staff/etc. Nat Borchers Ned Grabavoy Jason Kreis Freddy Adu (just for irony) Donovan Howard Ben Olsen etc etc Let Rimando play GK one half and then MF the second half. Or at least let him take free kicks and a pk or two
Petition to change the title to The Nick Rimando Pretirement thread I'd be fine with a statue of him diving or something. Model it after one of his 2009 playoff PK saves
I like it, but that doesn't scream GK to me. Maybe DLH can invest in hologram tech and we can all watch as holo Rimando dives then celebrates.
