I think Losada was let go within a week of Almeyda leaving so maybe the Quakes are close to bringing in the permanent coach? Hoping so.
How about this? How many great players became great coaches or even good coaches? I don’t know but I don’t think the track record is great. Ruud Gullit anybody?
What, you don’t think dropping your pants while addressing the team at halftime “to make a point” is a good idea?
Whether or not Rooney is successful will depend on how well he can rebuild the roster and that will likely depend on his budget. One advantage of Rooney is that he can pull in some guys that may not have been interested in DC otherwise - but they won't come cheap. I hope Wayne got a legal commitment in what he can spend. I want to see him succeed because I think ti will be a great story and very entertaining to watch. DC was fun to watch with Wayne and Acosta - there was a bit of magic. I think Wayne is one of those guys who has created magic throughout his career and would love to see if he can do it again with DC. Of course if he doesn't get a budget it'll be another sad story us Quakes fans are too familiar with.
Above, I noted that DC is hiring Rooney. Don implied that this was a bad hire because he's a good former player. The logic is so strange, I can only conclude this is just another front in the pro-Ian campaign. Of course being a former player doesn't guarantee success! This does not mean that former players are bad hires. Most who try to be managers do not succeed at the highest level, regardless of their pedigree as a player.
Fair enough but I wonder if the managerial success rate is lower for “former great players” than it is for “former non-great” players.
I implied being a star player is not a qualification for being a good coach. Maybe Rooney has other qualifications I’m unaware of, including a coaching track record.
I assume that means you would be against this hire? I wasn't around when he played for the Quakes so I missed all that drama. I remember some fans chanted "traitor" when he came to PPP for the all star game. I think he coached one of the teams or something. I assume this excludes him from getting the job as our fanbase is already small as it is and there is no need to upset a segment of long time fans.
For those who think Landon is a traitor, if Wondo endorsed him as coach would that change your mind? I don't even know if Wondo likes Landon, but Wondo's preferences hasn't stopped Leitch in the past (Calvo).
I think that he's too much of an L.A. guy to be willing to relocate.... his reason for wanting to move to L.A. is no longer a factor as he and Bianca divorced and he married someone else but would she be willing to live in the bay area? Let him coach the Galaxy. That would make much more sense.
I suppose I'd rather that it didn't happen, but if it does, it does. Admittedly, his hiring here would certainly be less repulsive than the team's post-Golden Age on-field performance (2010 & 2012 notwithstanding), the predominantly black primary uniforms, the way too small playing field of the post-Golden Age Frank Yallop (except for the last few years, thankfully) and Dominic Kinnear eras, the still unfinished stadium, the current ownership's overall cheapness & lack of ambition, etc. ... and if those have yet to have driven me away from being a San Jose Earthquakes fan since about 1977 or so, then I doubt that hiring Baby Judas as head coach ultimately would. Still, I'd like to know who the other candidates are first, though. Speaking of which: the article mentioned that there are currently six candidates, with Alex Covelo being one and with BJ being another. Any guesses on who the other four are? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Yes, I would not expect the kinds of things that drove his decisions at age 22 to still apply when he's 40.
Also, this news likely came from Donovan’s agent. Quakes are EXTREMELY secretive about hires. Landon is putting this out there in case he can land on someone else’s coaching list. Pretty surprised we aren’t hearing from Eric Wynalda’s agent.
Well if nothing else this little rumor gives us something to talk about, other than Tanner Beason's +/-. And did I mention - Tanner Beason is a Beas!
Yes, somebody is floating this rumor to get attention, and it's probably not the quakes. Although in this case I could see the front office floating it just to see if people's heads asploded.
Nope - definitely not. Although I'm not sure I care so much who the coach is as long as they don't revert to boring conservative soccer when the going gets tough. I'd rather the coach push forward with a beautiful style. If we get chaotic results because the roster can't play good soccer then I'll complain that we should get better players. I'm happy to have an uncompromising coach even though it's futile with this ownership. I'm not a fan of Covelo's 'pass it backwards' style although I didn't notice it as much in the last game or two. He may also just be doing that to compensate for a crappy defense (doesn't seem to help much anyway). So basically he's already doing what I don't like from day 1.
