The 2007- Earthquakes have had 7 non-interim head coaches, and it looks like they will soon need an 8th. BREAKING: The San Jose Earthquakes and head coach Matias Almeyda are set to part ways, per sources.Ownership and coaching staff working towards an agreement to move on, the discussions amicable. pic.twitter.com/mjU5T2YdV4— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) April 17, 2022 Post any ideas that are not Yallop or Kinnear. Also I am not putting Eric Wynalda in the poll. When Hugo Perez and his agent is waiting by the phone, you should probably be calling. #Quakes74 pic.twitter.com/aygcf33lM9— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) April 16, 2022 Time for Ian Russell to come home and coach #Quakes74— LuchiOut (@sjeq74) April 16, 2022 Here is the list of current MLS coaches: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Soccer_coaches I would consider pretty much any of them aside from Pablo Mastroeni, Gary Smith, Adrian Heath, Phil Neville... just a coincidence that 3/4 of those are English. Of the MLS coaches who could reasonably lose their job at some point in 2022 (so no fantasies of Greg Vanney, Jim Curtin, or Oscar Pareja), the two that interest me are DC's Hernán Losada and Charlotte's Miguel Ángel Ramírez.
Someone mentioned Santiago Solari on Quakes AfterShock, but i'd feel that would be a disaster as well.
Boy that would be some trajectory, Real Madrid, Club America, San Jose Earthquakes... next he would be coaching a local coed team.
Yallop Watson Kinnear Leitch Stahre Almeyda Am I forgetting a 7th? Interim stints for Russell and Ralston.
Can confirm that Almeyda is out, not that Tom needs it. #Quakes74 https://t.co/xbyChQ8yqt— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) April 17, 2022
so many coaches. as Stu Holden said just now: "...they need to sort themselves out in the front office as well as on the field and this next hire is going to be a really big part of that." Lalas: "San Jose fans deserve better."
We can edit this thread to say 7th head coach, but it looks like you already started a new thread. If we remove this thread, any votes will be lost. OK, there's only three votes so far, and one of them is mine, so it's not a big loss, but let me know what you want to do.
Ok, magic wand waved. I locked the other thread instead of deleting it and put a link to this one. That other one will eventually fall down off the first page.
In response to Jazzy in the locked version of this thread re: Almeyda became boring in the last year. I'm not sure that Almeyda did become boring. I think the problem was the roster changed and Yueill changed. I don't like the way Yueill plays anymore and I don't think that's on Almeyda because he did the same thing when he played for USMNT. Further, our offense changed quite a bit this year with the new signings and injuries. Only in the last couple games I feel they are starting to click with eachother and find a form. I'm sure it would have gotten more exciting if Almeyda had more time to work with these guys. Oh well, that's the way it goes.
Great motivational coach but he got his team relegated. Also, I still don't think he understands how offsides works.
CL needs to be ready to move. I would hope Ian is already on his way back to San José and we don't get stuck with anyone already on staff to finish up the year.
I think we had the same problem last year though - lots of possession, not much to show for it. I think in the end it was about tactics because when you win the ball you have a choice as to how fast you're going to attack. Sure players may have certain tendencies but it's up to the coach to get them to make the decisions he wants them to make. I also have a new theory that we have played slowly on offense, either consciously / by plan or subconsciouly because we have lacked confidence in our defense to withstand counterattacks. Again, I think that's about the coaching because I think man marking is difficult to set up when the opposition wins it and breaks out.
There are really two different questions here. 1. Who do we name head coach Right Now to finish this season. It will almost certainly be either Ian Russell (my first choice) or Alex Covelo (currently fifty-fourth on my list). 2. Who do we hire in the off-season to be our long(er) team coach? The answer to number 2 depends on how well Ian or Alex, or long-shot Hugo Perez does as head coach. People in the front office are only talking about Ian and Alex. My guess is that CL will hire Ian because CL and Ian are tight. Also, Alex is a Jesse guy. If the guy we hire does well with the rest of the season, say 1.5 PPG the rest of the way, then we probably keep him for the next season. Also, I'm going to bet that the next "permanent" head coach is on a two-year contract. Fisher isn't going to risk signing someone for a four-year gig again anytime soon. Also, I think it's going to be hard for the Quakes to attract a "name" coach other than Hugo, because we are perceived to be a damaged club. (An assessment I agree with.) I want Ian. He's my first and only choice really. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
This should be the guy, end of discussion. Do yourself a favor and watch it to understand why Reno was so good on a player salary budget one third the league average (which is about exactly the same as the Quakes).
Nothing is going to change except the name of the coach as long as tightfisted Fisher remains the owner. Leitch will continue to be hamstrung by budgetary constraints imposed on him by spendthrift Fisher, the new coach will complain he can't get the quality players he needs and we the fans will wring out hands and wail about why can't we have a good team. Same as it ever was.
I am on the Ian Russell bandwagon. Apart from his success with Reno, historically the most successful coaches in this league have come from within it, or at the minimum very strong links to US soccer even in the early days. Our two Championship coaches came from the league. Yes, there are exceptions, but, they are rare exceptions. I think the success of Robin Fraser last year at Colorado shows this. I also agree with my friend @Beerking that long term success has to come from a change in ownership philosophy or a change in ownership.
I find it very difficult to have opinions on coaches, at least in MLS. Whomever Leitch chooses, I just hope it isn't based on the desires of fans.
