Well I finally heard it for the first time tonight...not in it's entirety though..I missed the beginning. Heck I don't even know what the new song is called. Anyhoo Hetfield's voice is unmistakable and that is how come I knew it was the new Metallica song. Anyone else heard it? I think I need a couple of more listens to really get a feel for it. But my intial impression was that I thought it didn't have that Metallica vibe of old.
It reminded me of Metallica meets Limp Bizkit......which sucks. Man, I miss the And Justice For All/Master of Puppets days....
People seem to fail to understand that the Metallica of 1983-1988 stayed in the 80s and it isn't making a comeback. I listened to the end of it the other day and I thought that the drums were louder than usual. I know Metallica's drum sound is always loud, especially the hi-hat that goes with each hit of the snare, but this time it's ridiculous. It seemed like they were trying to go heavy, but staying with the whole Load/Reload sound.
The song is titled St. Anger, it's off of their new album also called St. Anger. I for one think it SUCKS, but that's just me. The last Metallica album I bought was the black album and I have all up to that one. I will NEVER buy another Metallica CD again, unless they find some vault with some previously unreleased stuff from back when they knew how to play real songs. Metallica is so disappointing it's not even funny. They should just retire.
see people? music changes... people get older. things around the artist's lives change, which in turn, affect lyrics and melodies. Back in the kill/ride days, they were barely 25 and couldn't contain themselves. It was a frat party out of control (by some accounts.) Now, they're probably pushing 40. A few of them even have kids. They've left their "frat party" the same way today's college kids will graduate from college. Slipknotter seems to be right though. The drums do seem louder than past. Also, is it just me or does Rob Trujillo seem to bring something to the band that Jason didn't?
when bands change their sound people complain because "it's not as good as the old stuff", but when they don't change their sound, people complain because "it's the same old stuff over and over." everyone's taste in music changes over the years. just because you liked an album that came out 10 years ago, doesn't mean you would like it if it came out today.
I accepted the fact that Metallica was going to change their sound, but when they proclaim that they're going back to their roots for a harder sound. A sound like what they used to make and they fail miserably I get upset. I was actually looking forward to the album because of the hype of it having the old school sound. As soon as I heard St. Anger I could tell it wasn't going to be so. Major disappointment.
I'm not and never was a Metallica fan, but we nonetheless discussed this ad nauseum on the Metal Sludge boards. I think the most disappointing thing is to see Metallica seemingly trying to hop on the nu metal bandwagon. Witness the Summer Sanatarium Tour if you need any more proof of this. To me that signifies a lack of integrity, and it's no wonder the long-time fans are upset about it. AC/DC and Iron Maiden do just fine while maintaining their classic sound. They're not selling 5 million at a time, but you would think Metallica has enough money saved up that they wouldn't need to chase the new metal crowd. As for the argument that they've mellowed out with age, I don't buy that. They're still pretending to be angry - it just seems more forced and artificial now.
I just got back from my local record store and picked up the "St. Anger" CD. Right now I'm listeing to track 1 "Frantic". Hmmm....maybe I should listen to the entire album before I give a short thumbs up/thumbs down review. I have to admit though I am one of those Metallica fans that LOVES the old Metallica from when I was in high school...damn that was a long time ago !
I even liked some of the Load-era stuff (I thought Until It Sleeps and Devil's Dance were pretty decent songs) but this one... my first thought was "Hmmm, this is harder than the last few albums." My second thought, about eight seconds later, was "Hmmm, and it still totally sucks." Which is depressing, since I have every Met album. All of them, except the hundred-dollar-boxed set. Symphony, Garage, the whole lot. Not this one, methinks.
From the title track, I would agree. The problem with this sone is that it's pretty badly mixed, and just overall sloppy. I'll have to check the rest of the album out. Robert Trujillo is a great bass players, it doesn't really come out on this track. As for the NuMetal references, I don't hear it on this one. It is definately has speed metal elements that the young tattoed set doesn't . Like I said, though, I'll have to listen to the rest of the album.
Going off of two listens of one song(St.Anger)I like the fact that they brought some aggression back, but as stated above, they stayed with the Load/Re-Load sound. I have called them MetallicB since they lost Cliff.Album/CD reflections. Kill 'em All---The CD that captured the aggression of Hardcore but maintained the melody and clarity of Metal for the first time.Dave Mustaines solos never sounded better after Kirk cleaned them up.The creation of the perfect thrash machine. Ride The Lightning---The CD that hooked me forever."Turn this off. It's giving me a headache....but will you record it for me?"I never heard such power and heaviness before and then they whip out the cleanest acoustic sound I ever came across on "Fade To Black".Plus Lars stopped repeating his drum fills after this CD(Repeated two on For Whom The Bell Tolls and then that was it)Only downside in my mind is the turning down of the bass in the mix.It should be a crime. Master Of Puppets---Should be called Masterpiece Of Puppets or Pastor Of Muppets.Although plenty of bands had that sound afterwards,NOTHING was as heavy and as clear as MOP when it came out.The Ozzy tour did a lot for them and propelled them into a crowd that previously ignored them.Losing Cliff really hurt them. $5.98 E.P.---The best bass sound in Metallica's history,IMO.Good introduction to Jason only to be foiled by a wierd mix on the next CD. And Justice For All---The beginning of the end(For thrash that is)"One" really opened a lot of doors to Metallica and losing the Grammy to Jethro Tull may have been the best thing to ever happen to their popularity. For such a weak album, they sure got a lot of press to promote it and themselves. Metallica---One great rock album.Problem is,they're not Rockica, they're Metallica. No thrash or speed to be found on this CD at all.(Fuck you,Nirvana. You really fucked up the music scene for about 6 or 7 years)Accepting this metallic travesty after about a year,I finally put the CD back into my CD player and couldn't take it out. What a great collection of songs!I was a still a little bummed that they didn't thrash anymore but marveled at the production of "The Black Album".First they fused Hardcore and Metal together and now they successfully fused Metal and Rock.Surely they wouldn't lower themselves in the future to fusing Rock and Alternative/Grunge,would they? Load---Crap.They did.Again,I must put on my"Oh,well. So what if they don't rage anymore"face and try to like this CD.It took me awhile but there are some good tunes on Load."Hero Of The Day","Until It Sleeps","King Nothing","Outlaw Torn","Mama Said","2 X 4" and probably my favorite "Bleeding Me".Good music,it's just not Metallica. Re-Load--More of the same.Good stuff here, but just not enough umph(!) to keep me really interested."Fuel","Prince Charming","Bad Seed","Devil's Dance" and of course "Fixxxer" stand out for me. Garage Inc.---I liked it when it came out and was sick of it a week later.I never want to hear "Whiskey In The Gyro" ever again. I didn't get the box set,S&M or anything else...correction.I really liked the "Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica"I don't need to hear "Enter Sandman" again after watching about 8 different versions on that video. If St Anger is along the lines of Load and Re-Load,then fine.I accepted this change years ago.If they do go back to their roots and play faster, then I applaud them.Maybe they can revive thrash again. Fingers crossed. BTW,off topic but I listened to RAGE "Secrets In A Wierd World"(1989) while I typed this. PEACE
IIRC, Trujillo isn't on this album mostly, if at all. One of their producers played the bass for most of this album.
I was with you up to this point......there is no way in hell AJFA was a weak album.....in fact, it's my favorite out of everything they ever put out. Just about every song is awesome on this one.
i never miss the opportunity to post in a Metal thread, but BakedAlaskan already said everything necessary (btw, how's your show going ?). I listened to Thrash Metal while typing this, a genre St. Anger has nothing in common with.
I'm going to have to agree with Nate on this. Justice was one of Metallica's best albums imho, their slide into crapiness came when the black album was released.
However, if anyone says the production on that album wasn't great, I'll have to agree with them (they stripped all the bass out of the album, to mess with Newstead, for some bizarre reason).....but it was still a great album nonetheless (hell, I'm playing it right now......have they ever wrote a faster song than Dyer's Eve?).
I'm on my second run through of the "St. Anger" CD. If you are looking for "Master Of Puppets" don't buy this album...btw Target has them on sale for $9.99, I bought my copy at the local record store yesterday for $12.99..I shoulda waited until I went to Target later last night. BakedAlaskan pretty much summed up my thoughts on the album...very Load/Re-Load-ish. And you guys are right...the drums are very prominent on this CD.
I'm 10 times better on the air than I was that first night. Don't get me wrong. I still suck, but I'm still 10 times better,I swear. I'm hoping I don't get put on another delay untill I can have streaming audio up and running again. I'm hearing a possible June 22nd hookup but I'm expecting my show on the 29th to be the first one back online. The corporation is selling their easy listening station and closed down all activities connected to both stations. (Streaming audio one of them) Once the sale goes through on the 20th,Then they will have some cash to upgrade the new rock station. They said the show on the 22nd will be online...I'll wait and see. I'm too egoed out to NOT let the board know when we're back up and running.Trust me on that one!! You don't know how this disturbs me. Lame.
Is that the song: "When a man lies he murders some part of the world. All this I cannot bear cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home." The song is like freakin 9 minutes long.. and those are the entire lyrics.
This album's a progression...can't fault a band for wanting not to stay stagnant. Just because it's not "Puppets" doesn't mean it's nu-metal. First listen, nothing really popped...By the third, it really sounds good to me. Bob Rock had a lot more to do with the sound of this one, and that would explain the big drums, as he's known for a big rhythm sound on his projects. I'm a bit surprised at how "live" a lot of this sounds, considering Rock's rep as a perfectionist.
Did you actually wait for AJFA to come out?I remember being pretty bummed when it was released. Two fast songs.First and last, that's it.Come to think of it,Metallica has been bumming me out with each release for almost 15 years now.Side one of AJFA, RTL and MOP are basically the same formula;(This is just my opinion, although many people I know agree with me) Fast opener:Slight edge to MOP and AJFA Title track:BIG edge to RTL and MOP Slow grinder:They are all different yet the same style.Push Mellow track that rages at the end.Can anyone really put Fade To Black,Welcome Home:Sanitarium or One over one of the others?Push. Side two is what separates MOP from the rest.Yeah, maybe Dyer's Eve can hold up to Damage Inc.,but is there anything on AJFA that can compete with Disposable Heroes?Orion is a much more jamming piece than To Live Is To Die.Period.Leper Messiah may break even with what's left but none of those can beat it.Again, for what it's worth, that's just my opinion and a little look into my tastes. I'm gonna have to agree with about half of that.Yes.It is one of Metallica's best releases.Their 4th best. The Black Album is their 5th best.Load is their 6th best.etc...etc..I just think their slide into crapiness came a little earlier than you. That's all.No St. Angst from over here. PEACE
That's the song before it, To Live Is To Die. It's the song that in tribute to Cliff Burton, their former bassist (who was probably the glue of the old Metallica) who died on a tour bus accident in Sweden. I believe the lyrics are a poem that Cliff wrote, and the title of the song is a saying that Cliff used to say. Dyer's Eve is the one that starts off like this: "Dear Mother Dear Father What Is this Hell You Have Put Me Through Believer Deceiver Day in Day out Live My Life Through You Pushed onto Me What's Wrong or Right Hidden from this Thing That They Call Life"
That's "To Live Is To Die",the song just before "Dyer's Eve".It's dedicated to Cliff and he wrote those lyrics and some of the rhythms in that song are his, too. PEACE
