Using Understat data to judge this debate is a massive sampling bias. Understat data only goes back to 2014. By 2014, Cristiano Ronaldo was already 29 years old and adapting his game due to his tendonitis injury. You are completely erasing prime Manchester United Ronaldo and his peak physical/dribbling years at Real Madrid (2009–2013). You can’t claim a statistical victory when you're throwing out half of one player's career. This is a classic Texas Sharpshooter fallacy. You cherry picked a highly specific, arbitrary metric (left foot overperformance + headers) just to engineer a number that barely matches Ronaldo’s aerial stats. Aerial dominance is a tactical tool that shifts how entire defenses have to line up. You can't math away Ronaldo being the most lethal aerial threat in football history by adding random sub stats together. Claiming Messi wins adaptability while Ronaldo won league titles, domestic cups, and Champions Leagues across three different major European leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A) is wild. Messi spent the prime of his career inside a highly specific, world class system built entirely around him at Barcelona. Furthermore, calling the all-time leading goalscorer in international football history unadaptable because of specific tournament knockout windows is blatant cherry picking. You are defining dribbling and playmaking solely by Messi’s specific style (central slaloms and through-balls). Prime Ronaldo’s playmaking at United and early Madrid was built on elite crossing volume, wing play, and creating chaotic transitions. His dribbling relied on explosive pace, stepovers, and isolation on the flanks. Just because Messi plays like a classic playmaker doesn't mean Ronaldo didn't impact transitions and chance creation at a historic level.
He will never win wc. He is lazy off the ball and doesnt defend. He is a player less on the pitch and that doesnt work in modern football. "Messi doesn't defend with the team, you pretty much play 11 vs 10." - Van Basten
If winning a World Cup is the absolute non negotiable metric that shuts up trolls, then you have to be consistent with your own logic. By this standard, Pelé is indisputably the greatest with 3 World Cups, and Messi only just caught up to Maradona. It also means you think Julián Álvarez has a greater legacy than Cristiano Ronaldo, and Shkodran Mustafi is a better defender than Paolo Maldini. If your metric produces ridiculous conclusions, your metric is broken
It's funny how Messi fans celebrate him covering the fewest kilometers as some sort of galaxy brain tactical masterclass, but if Cristiano Ronaldo stands in the box waiting for a cross to save his energy for a finish, he's called lazy, a ghost, and a penalty box merchant. The hypocrisy is wild. Both players adapt their movement to preserve energy in their late 30s. The only difference is when Messi does it, his fans write poetry about his walking geometry, and when Ronaldo does it, you call it a liability. Remember how Messi fans called him the problem at ManU when he were carrying ManU in CL group stages and scoring hat tricks at EPL cause he didn't press like Mandzukić
This is exactly the kind of dull, predictable, impossible strawman arguments Messi trolls always build because it’s the only way they can argue against him. You create a fake “World Cup is the ONLY metric” position, stretch it to absurd conclusions nobody actually believes, and then pretend you won the debate because the exaggerated version sounds illogical. I brought it up b/c trolls prior to the WC would say "he will never be the greatest unless he wins the WC" - and now YOU HAVE NOTHING. Duh. Anyone who started typing last week can make your kind of argument. Nobody serious says World Cups are the ONLY metric. They’re part of the conversation, especially when comparing players whose careers were already historically elite. The point is that Messi already had the individual stats, longevity, playmaking, goals, RECORD NUMBER OF Ballons d’Or, consistency, club success, international records, and eye test. Winning the World Cup closed the one gap trolls kept obsessing over for 15 years. And now he has 2 COPA AMERICAS AND A WORLD CUP! not even Pele or the GREAT Diego did that. But that’s why the argument disappeared after 2022. And comparing Messi to Julián Álvarez or Mustafi to Maldini is just intellectually lazy because football has always judged greatness through the totality of a player’s career, influence, ability, consistency, and achievements combined, not one isolated trophy in a vacuum. Messi has been consistent for over 20 years now. Its insane what he has done. Messi didn’t become the GOAT only because of the World Cup. The World Cup just removed the last excuse people used against him.
It's hilarious how fast you shifted the goalposts. Your first comment was literally a smug one-liner: "Maybe Messi will win a WC and finally shut up these trolls." You absolutely tried to use the World Cup as an automatic debate settler. Now that the logical flaws of using a 7 game knockout tournament as a definitive metric were exposed, you're backpedaling into a 400 word essay about "totality of career" and crying strawman. Stick to your original energy
What's hilarious is how fast all of you (and you know who YOU all are, b/c your nationality and clubs are listed) went to the internets after the 2022 WC to start attacking Messi because you heard people on tv saying "The GOAT conversation is over" AND THAT DROVE YOU CRAZY. So take, suc# it, and deal with it. The little guy won everything, he is the most decorated soccer player of all time, and he has been consistent for over 20 years. SCUK IT!!!
Laughable for many reasons 1)No brasilians among the starters 2)Two too many dutch players 3)and above all, those those in the pictures are NOT Bearzot Cabrini and DAsaev!
And there it is. The absolute textbook emotional collapse when the logical arguments run out. You went from trying to sound like a sophisticated analyst talking about "totality of careers" to screaming caps lock playground insults and crying about TV pundits. If a player's legacy is so ironclad, you wouldn't need to throw a temper tantrum when someone brings up basic footballing facts like inter league adaptability or Champions League knockout records. Take a deep breath bro
HA HA HA HA!! Keep crying. Your tears feed my soul. Messi won everything and Pele never had the cajones to play in a real league. And don't give me that crap about national treasure bs. The real myth is Pele who LIED about his goal total until his death.
It's clear that these new generations don't respect the Brazilian championship and brazilian players 80's by the way really !!
I really can't fathom why so many consider Frank Rijkaard an all-timer. I have seen all his matches with AC Milan -at least in the form the highlights, but all the CL ones completely, and also several complete serie A matches- and all his official NT matches, and I can't figure out how in the world his reputation has grown so big. To me, in the classic AC Milan midfield: Ancelotti-Rijkaard-Evani-Donadoni he was for sure the LEAST capable: a purely quantity player equipped with an average technique (here I considered Gullit as an attacker; in any case, by far superior to Rijkaard).
Comparing directly players so distant in time like Pele and Messi is difficult and perhaps not even making sense. But indirect comparison suggests that in his time Pele likely was (or at least was perceived) as more clear of competition tham Messi has ever been. Two GOAT category players in any case.
The ubiquitous and ever growing european football suprematism, one of the reason that made stop loving football at some point.
The absolute desperation on display here is hilarious. You went from Messi vs Ronaldo to screaming caps lock insults, and now you're randomly attacking Pelé with debunked internet myths because you couldn't handle a basic tactical debate. You are moving the goalposts so fast you're practically off the pitch. Just admit that the moment someone brought up Ronaldo’s multi-league dominance and superior Champions League knockout pedigree, your entire argument melted down
So much energy put in demeriting a genius alike player. Also so many Brazilians fawning over Cris it's quite bizarre.
