OK, here goes. This was intended to be a movie quiz, but because movies and TV typically draw from the same pool of talent, some questions will also involve TV as well. I'll update this as often as possible, but there are a lot of you (I hope) and one of me, and in all likelihood you'll answer these faster than I can ask them, so please just be patient. As Obie did in the music quiz, I'll give you points if you suggest a question to me and I use it. First correct answer to a question gets credit, obviously. Any reference to a movie winning an award refers to an Oscar, and any reference to a TV show winning an award refers to an Emmy, unless otherwise noted. No searching for these answers online; I'm doing my best to write questions that make that hard to do, but there's so much available that I can't make guarantees. If I catch you looking stuff up online, you'll be disqualified for cheating. If I catch you looking stuff up on IMDB, you'll be disqualified and I'll kick you in the nutz, because not only are you cheating, but you're also being lazy. We'll start with some "which one of these is not like the other?" questions, because I like them, even though they're probably way easier than I think. I may or may not give partial credit for a correct answer that wasn't the one I was looking for. You need to tell me which of the items on the list doesn't belong, and why. Questions are worth 10 points unless otherwise noted. So, without further ado: 1) Which of the following Best Picture-winners doesn't belong: American Beauty, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Rain Man, Schindler’s List, The Silence of the Lambs 2) Which of the following movies doesn't belong (5 points): The Running Man, The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, The Silence of the Lambs, Stand By Me 3) Which of the following actors doesn't belong: Warren Beatty, Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, Robert Redford 4) Which of the following movies doesn't belong: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Analyze This, Happy Gilmore, Lost In Space, Office Space, Six Days Seven Nights, Three To Tango 5) Which of the following Frank Capra movies doesn't belong: It Happened One Night, It's a Wonderful Life, Lady For a Day, Lost Horizon, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Ummm.... American Beauty was written directly for the screen? Silence of the Lambs was not a Stephen King story. Branagh has never won Oscar best actor? I'll guess that Jimmy Stewart wasn't in Lady For A Day.
Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz Correct on American Beauty, but not what I was looking for, and I like my answer better, so 5 points to you and 5 points remaining if someone comes up with another. Correct on Silence of the Lambs. 5 points. While true that Branagh has never won a best actor Oscar, and that Jimmy Stewart wasn't in Lady For a Day, neither are correct. 10 points for Obie, questions 1, 3, 4 and 5 still open.
Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz Bingo! Noah nails my pet question. (I'm a Friends junkie.) Obie 10 Noah Elliott 10 1, 3, 5 still open I knew you'd answer them faster than I could write them
1) Which of the following Best Picture-winners doesn't belong: American Beauty, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Rain Man, Schindler’s List, The Silence of the Lambs Schindler's List is based on a true story 3) Which of the following actors doesn't belong: Warren Beatty, Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, Robert Redford Branagh has not won a Best Director Oscar. 5) Which of the following Frank Capra movies doesn't belong: It Happened One Night, It's a Wonderful Life, Lady For a Day, Lost Horizon, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington It's A Wonderful Life was not a Columbia Picture.
Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz Rain Man was also an original screenplay, so I want all ten points.
Re: Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz I looked it up. GT is correct, so I shouldn't get the extra five.
Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz You get no points for Schindler's List being a true story, because that's weak. But I'll give you the 5 points I originally gave Obie for pointing out my error, because you're right that Rain Man was original. (I like being a dictator. A dictator who needs to improve his fact-checking, but a dictator nonetheless.) Branagh not having won Best Director is correct. 10 points. It's a Wonderful Life was not Columbia, and the rest were, so 10 points for that as well. GringoTex 25 Noah Elliott 10 Obie 5 Question 1 is still open, and is now 10 points again. 6a) What's the common thread of these actors (5 points): Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, Larry Linville, McLean Stevenson, Loretta Swit 6b) Which one doesn't belong (5 points)? 7) Which of the following Best Picture nominees doesn't belong: Chinatown, ET, The Godfather, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Silence of the Lambs
Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz 6a) What's the common thread of these actors (5 points): Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, Larry Linville, McLean Stevenson, Loretta Swit 6b) Which one doesn't belong (5 points)? 6a- MASH 6b- Stevenson
Incorrect. 8) Which of the following Brat Packers doesn't belong: Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy
Re: Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz 6a correct, 6b you need to give a reason GringoTex 30 Noah Elliott 10 Obie 5
Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz 7) Which of the following Best Picture nominees doesn't belong: Chinatown, ET, The Godfather, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Silence of the Lambs Chinatown was not directed by an American.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz I'm getting even for not knowing a single one of those damn music questions.
Man, you're doing it quickly too. Take a deep breath, dude. 8) 10 points for Rob Lowe not being in The Breakfast Club. 6b) Stevenson is incorrect. 1) You only get one guess, sorry, I meant to put that in the intro, and that's not what I was looking for anyway. 7) Ehhh... 5 points. Not what I was looking for, so 5 points still available. GringoTex 45 Noah Elliott 10 Obie 5 Still open: 1, 6b, 7 (5 points remain) I'll try to have some better ones this evening.
6b. Correct that Loretta Swit wasn't in the film, incorrect answer. 7. Correct. GringoTex 45 Obie 10 Noah Elliott 10
Obie should get all ten points for this one. My "Polanski wasn't American" answer was minutia. I'm gonna stomp everyone's ass in this game anyway, so I can afford the good sportsmanship.
Re: Re: Re: The MVBM Movie/TV Quiz There are two equally good answers for this one. 1) Farrell was not an original member of the TV cast. He replaced Stevenson as Trapper midway. 2) Linville was the only one in both the film and the TV show.
