I still enjoy ELO more than most other mainstream 70’s pop-rock. The band they sprang from, The Move, is also excellent. Though a lot weirder.
I remember my band director from 6th grade telling us about them, and then hearing Evil Woman in maybe seventh grade? I think that wash the first hit I heard. Then a string of hits that earned their way onto one of my "era" mixtapes. Top five for me (I don't own any albums except Greatest Hits), no order Livin' Thing Don't Bring Me Down Mr. Blue Sky Sweet Talkin' Woman Can't Get It Out Of My Head Turn To Stone Yeah, that's six. Sue me..
I look into the sky (the love you need ain't gonna see you through) And I wonder why (the little things you planned ain't coming true)....
Stray Cats were really good in Saratoga tonight - I definitely recommend checking them out this summer if you can swing it.
I got into them in the 70s. A change from screaming guitars that had put me off most music of the era. I’d lay back with my big comfortable head phones when the rest of the house were in bed.
Jingle from the 40's.... ♫ "I got shoes, you got shoes, everybody's got to have shoes, but there's only one kind of shoe for me—good old Buster Brown shoes!"
this sounds like fun, I’d love to see a show at MSG. ELO are the best of the 70’s prog rock bands imo. More recently, I remember watching some of their 2014 concert footage (from Hyde Park)… …and thinking I’d love to see them. Fast forward to 2019, they came through SJ, we went with another couple…we were all completely blown away, great performance. I expect they will be amazing at MSG.
we were watching some of their US Festival ‘83 footage before the show and like a fine wine they’ve improved with age… https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/stray-cats/2024/the-mountain-winery-saratoga-ca-1ba85940.html …the set list was a blast from start to finish and they were better than we expected. I’ve never heard the music sound better in that sweet venue.
I was listening to the a cappella version of the Gummi Bears theme (because of course I have the a cappella version of the Gummi Bears theme on my playlist) and I noticed that there is a point where the background singers say "boing boing". I don't know why I never noticed it before. I've heard the song hundreds of times. But this time I did and I though it was the funniest thing ever and laughed like crazy and nearly crashed my car. So this is a public service announcement about putting that song on your car playlist.
Impossible. Also CDBA. https://t.co/DVWhGifb1y— Rex Chapman🏇🏼 (@RexChapman) August 3, 2024 I go Al, Marvin, Stevie and Teddy. I pretend to be my parents and who they loved. As for myself, is it weird that I think Teddy doesn't get enough credit compared to the rest?
Went over to Athens and saw The New Pornographers Thursday night at the 40 Watt club. Great show even without Neko Case joining them on this part of their tour.
Yeah, that's weird af. Bruh, you musta forgot. There's only a few dozen (if that) artists/bands in the history of non jazz music who can claim a level with Stevie Wonder. Marvin's not quite there and neither is Al. Teddy Pendergrass isn't in the same area code as any of these guys. His voice wet panties before the crash. That's the only reason he's included in this meme, and it's not good enough. Like Luther, Whitney and Gladys. They are voices. Stevie, Al, Marvin and Teddy in that order. If the Marvin choice had been What's Going On or Mercy Mercy Me, it would move him ahead of Al. But Al's choice should have been Still In Love With You, and Stevie's Living For The City. why did they use these songs? I absolutely love memes like this because there's always disagreement on what SHOULD be there, and that makes for great conversation. IMO you add Donny Hathaway's Extension Of A Man and Bill Withers' + 'Justments and almost anything off those two (except Magdalena- Donny just took his part off Danny O'Keefe's original, might have been the arranger for O'Keefe) would either top the list or come second and third to a Stevie tune. My guess is, the original meme maker is a 50something who was moved more by being wooed, by being sung to; each artist except Teddy has better material when the brain is fully engaged.
I was discussing this over text with one of my best friends from college He said "This would take 2 hours of deliberation, plenty of scotch, and 2 cigars." We agreed Teddy didn't experience the commerical success of the other 3 but he was a powerhouse. To your point, I did say a damn lot of kids were born cause of Teddy's music. Now that I think about this, my brother's middle name was Marvin because of Marvin Gaye so, maybe he should be first. I do love lists like this because there is such fun debates.
Bruh! If you love real RnB and Soul, you gotta get yourself acquainted. The birth rate went up when he dropped an album. @Auriaprottu You see my point.
R&B crooner, with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes until the mid-70s or so. He had that Try A Little Tenderness growl to his voice. What DT says about babies being made is true. He was not crossover in any meaningful way as a solo artist, so I'm not surprised Val hadn't heard of him.
