On another note, Leonid & Friends are doing a US tour, they're in Atlanta or B'ham tonight.

These guys are the truth, and probably as close to the band experience as anyone with horns since Chicago. Horn section, drummer, bassist and pianist look like former school band people, like they know what tf they're doing, not just three-chord whelps posing with a beer. Guit/vox sounds great, one slight accent thingy at the word "street". They are put together for this sort of thing, and they are better than the original band (A/B that shit if you don't believe me- Chicago gets the credit for being the writers, but that's it).

Room is great, mix is great, playing is great, can't ask for more. And like I said, they look like somebody I'd be playing with. Mature, no pretense, just music.

I've never heard this one until today. Sun Ra in a quartet. Not unheard of in his early Chicago days, but this is 1978

Pretty accessible by Sun Ra standards, and sax man John Gilmore is about 100 times more lyrical than he is when he's playing with the Sun Ra Arkestra.

Thanks for this. Sun Ra is not generally accessible, for real, but this is. There's a snippet of an equally accessible tune on that documentary I posted a few years back. I never did find out the title of that tune.

His earlier stuff is a lot more accessible, it sounds like moderately tweaked big band music.

Also it’s worth checking out the Sun Ra Singles compilation, where all the tracks had to be kept down to 3 minutes or so. It covers a huge span of time and it’s amazing how much diversity there is, from the evolution of his usual jazz stuff to obscure doo wop and r&b.

I believe the movie was intended to be posthumous. I'm just mad I didn't check his socials as much.

Because of Ryuichi I've developed an interest in learning piano. That and a couple other tracks I've heard.

The first link, I picked up the album at random yesterday. There's a record store near my house that I can walk to and most of the stuff they sell ranges from $3 to $30. Was looking for some stuff, saw a New Age section, decided to look and liked the cover art. Great little store, but there's so many stores in the D and the metro that I'd need a week to explore. One store has a fantastic

As for piano, some of my favorite tracks.

For some reason Millie Jackson popped up on my radar. I downloaded Caught Up. I was blown away by the lyrics…it reminded me of the first time I listened to Loretta Lynn’s greatest hits.

There is a directness to the lyrics that is as bracing as a polar bear swim for someone like me, steeped in music for post grads. Neither lady’s lyrics have much subtlety. You don’t have to work too hard to interpret the meaning.

And if like me you don’t care much for the cock rock version of Feel Like Making’s Love check out her version. That one is going into a playlist.

Didn't seem a problem to me; however unlike most of the stuff you have posted in the jazz vein, I thought this was kind of the aural equivalent of TL;DR. A whole lot of disjointed fluency, of doing stuff because you can, rather than serving or reaching toward a tune or a theme or a hook.

I gave up at half an hour or so.,,

Been buying Joni's stuff on vinyl, I think I might skip most of her 80s stuff, but I think Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm is one I'll buy. Just for this song alone. I don't even like Peter Gabriel but this is brilliant.
