It sure does. A little handholding in those situations might be all that is required to get a player through a period of frustration.

I don’t believe Gutierrez would have to file a switch. And the earliest Mexico could cap tie him would be next summer’s Gold Cup.

It’s the transfer portal in college football. Guys leave all the time even in circumstances like these.

It’s also true he may have just decided he prefers Mexico.

It probably has to do with that he sees now he won’t be on the Olympic roster. If he wanted to switch to Mexico earlier, it was complicated by that they didn’t qualify for the U-20 WC or Olympics. Why pass up US callups to those events if they come? Now that he sees the Olympics won’t happen, time to switch.

Maybe, but there isn't any reason to do it *now*. Use your switch strategically because circumstances change.

My blazing hot take on all this in a general day is that these are both rational and irrational decisions in some combination -- not speaking to the specifics of the Vargas case, about which I know nothing that everyone else here doesn't know -- and so, basically, who knows exactly what's going on. Even the players themselves probably only think they know. I get it, we've all been there.

In one of the stories (I think the Athletic one) they said they’ve been recruiting him heavily for the last year.

It's very early in CONCACAF 2026 qualifying, but a round of matches (in what's considered the second round) wrapped up earlier this month and the (six five-team) groups are taking shape.

Where my inexpert eye keeps landing are groups E (one of Guatemala, Jamaica and the DR won't advance; Jamaica has a win against the DR already) and F (one of Suriname, Puerto Rico and El Salvador will be out).

My guess is that the most noteworthy changes will take place once teams either make it to the third round or look like they have a real shot to get there and could use the lift.

I really don't love the format. The random draw makes it so the second best team in this whole thing could be going to the intercontinetal playoff. Unless I am misreading on how they are drawing the final round.

It is a bit confusing. The top two teams from each second-round group do seem to get re-drawn into three groups of four, with only those three group winners advancing directly. It could certainly get funky and end up not looking great on the field for CONCACAF, not that its smaller teams generally do that well in World Cups anyway.

It would suck to lose them, but I would be a pretty big fan of a Mexico team that includes Vargas, Gutierrez, Gonzalez, Luna, Leone, etc., etc. Obviously, I wouldn't root for them against the US, but knowing that they are US products, it would be fun to watch them on the international stage regardless of who they are representing.

This kind of thing is still a ways off, but it seems bound to happen to some degree at some point.

We could use a dynamic winger a lot more IMO... GB's 4-3-3 relies on wing play so much and we still don't have any legit backups for CP and Weah.

I agree just taking a cheap shot at Italy because they're so bad at soccer (see last 4 World Cups)

Puerto Rico could get decently good. There are a lot of American kids at a decent level of Puerto Rican roots.

I said the bulk of this in the thread in yanks abroad, but it’s relevant here too. Twitter is saying Efrain Morales is switching to Puerto Rico too, and apparently they’re recruiting Sebastian Berhalter too of all people.

Puerto Rico needs one of those guys who just DMs players and asks if they’re Puerto Rican. If they DMed every Spanish named player born in New York playing at an USL level or above they may find a couple of players.

Unfortunately for them, they suffer from "Concacaf minnow's disorder" -- financial problems, coaching issues, disorganization. If they can right the ship, they might be able to move up in the pecking order.

I guess you can never be surprised with these national teams anymore. But I was stunned that following their World Cup Qualifying draw vs El Salvador in San Salvador, he says he was paid 75 dollars.

I’d imagine that will deter people. I do kind of have a feeling that Jeremy De Leon is generating some interest amongst Puerto Ricans so maybe money will come in.

RSL selling Fidel Barajas to Chivas for $4 million... there had been rumors that Barajas would switch to the US, does this transfer have any impact on that? Of course Cowell still plays for the US after moving to Chivas also for $4 million, so who knows...
