    Or it could be that the paperwork isn't in order yet (that's the longest part of the process for FIFA or for many countries to get citizenship).

    Though it wouldn’t necessarily need to be in order to be named on a camp roster. I imagine a switch would just need to approved by the date the Copa roster is due (June 12).

    True, but there are plenty of reasons why it might not happen.

    If he's not on the provisional roster (that was due May 5th), it would only be for a camp look-see.

    And we've seen past provisional rosters include players who haven't committed to programs yet!

    CIV made it to three World Cups in a row with Drogba, then missed the last two. With the expanded field, who knows? They're off to a good start. (Whether he'd be a candidate for that team is obviously another story.) The won the last African championship -- but they didn't make Paris.

    This may have been the player in question for Canada

    Good catch! He would need a FIFA waiver just like Ferreira and Zelalem.

    The waivers have pretty much gone away under the new rules. He lived in Canada since he was small. He's fine under the current rules.

    What do the new rules say? 5 years of continuous residency at any age?

    Interesting story in the FIFA ruled him ineligible in 2013 but he kept playing for Equatorial Guinea anyways.

    Here's what we have for players "assuming a new nationality" (meaning they naturalized):

    d) He has lived on the territory of the relevant association:

    i) for players that began living on the territory before the age of 10: at least three years;
    ii) for players that began living on the territory between the age of 10 and 18: at least five years;
    iii) for players that began living on the territory from the age of 18: at least five years.

    Those who come in under Part ii must show they came for non-football reasons and get approval from a FIFA committee.

    It seems like Tani moved to Canada at age 10 so he would need approval. Jesus also moved at age 10 but Zelalem moved at age 9.

    More recruiting fun!

    Francis Castillo played for Nicaragua in CONCACAF U20 prequalifiers earlier this year.

    https://www.concacaf.com/en/under-20s-men/game-details?matchid=726518

    Now he's been called up to El Salvador's U20s.

    He's also American! So by the property of whatever the heck is going on, we can count on him to play for us if we qualify for the U20 finals and El Salvador doesn't.

    ;)

    Victor Fung ('07) is another. Played for Canada at U-17 WCQ and WC. Now with the Venezuela U-20's. Eligible for USA and Hong Kong (might be one or two other countries too).

    Fung, I'm pretty sure, wasn't with Canada during U20 prequalifying, so I guess this would be a straightforward switch, if he goes through with it (or maybe he already has).

    Making the switch with no tournament lined up or a senior call-up in hand smacks of frustration.
