It's possible that they could build a structure around/on top of the existing stadium in DC, but there's no way the existing structure was designed with an enclosed roof in mind.

There's no easy way to do it with the North and West stands (the West in particular) being shorter than the East or South stands without some real retrofitting going on.

Yeah, that plot of land is really small. I'm glad DC got it, and I'm glad they control their revenue better now than at RFK. But its growth potential is very limited.

So Etihad Park will offer a tiered, paid membership program, Etihad Park+, that’s not tied to a season ticket and is venue-specific vs team-specific, promising various perks to any fans who visit the stadium, be it for NYCFC, Gotham, or otherwise

    https://www.lapresse.ca/sports/chroniques/2026-07-16/l-interieur-du-stade-olympique-sera-renove.php (French)

The interior of Olympic Stadium will finally be renovated

The Quebec government has just given the green light to Olympic Park to proceed with the modernization project at the venue, Minister Amélie Dionne confirmed to La Presse. The cabinet has already approved the decision. The work should be finished by 2028, the year already planned for the re-opening of the stadium.

Includes a rectangular seating alignment in the lower bowl, premium spaces, new concessions/restrooms/etc.

"the stands in the lower bowl will be reconfigured into a rectangular shape, to encircle a football or soccer field. The seats will be moved approximately 30 meters from the playing surface on each side."

"suites, terraces, and open areas—aimed at a more affluent clientele, will generate more revenue. This is now standard practice in the entertainment industry. In some MLS stadiums, it accounts for 70% of revenue, while representing only 20% of the seats."

“What we’re prioritizing today truly meets the needs of our partners and the needs of the market,” explains Joëlle Brodeur. CF Montréal, for example, wanted a rectangular configuration, seats closer to the action, and premium spaces. These three requests are included in the upcoming renovations."

More information about the renovations and MLS/Saputo
    • MLS was willing to make concessions to wait for the Olympic Stadium renovations to be completed
    • Joey Saputo is said to still keep all his options regarding keeping or selling the club - the journalist said it depends on how the financials works in the coming years
    • The renovation makes it more likely for a local investor to try to make it work should Saputo choose to sell
    • 2 US cities were in discusion to take the club if the government didn’t make this announcement (most likely via a sale). It was being discussed for weeks
    • The rest is about the possibility of hosting baseball games but not on a permanent basis due to the configuration
    • Looks like upper bowl will be excluded for now - more to come in tomorrow's announcement
    • Renovations will be done in phases

Joey Saputo isn't the sole owner of CF Montreal though.............. His family owns the team, and his brother has just as much say over the team's future as Joey does.

They have a say, but "as much of a say" as he does? Not from what we know.

Several people believe that Joey Saputo is the (sole) big boss behind the strategic decisions of #CFMTL. However, people forget that his brother also has decision-making power in the club. Indeed, Lino Saputo Jr is on the board and still gets involved with the club. The big decisions at the club—they have to be approved by both brothers. Lino Jr is an excellent businessman. He has grown the assets of Saputo, the dairy company. He is recognized and respected in Quebec Inc. In short, we always talk about Joey, but there's also Lino behind #CFMTL. And according to several insiders, Lino is known for being very tough, but fair, in business. He is responsible and doesn't spend money for nothing. It's worth noting that Lino Jr is not involved at all in Bologna. Sometimes, things don't always explain themselves in the way we first see them.

You should read that again...Lino is the conservative one between the two. Montreal Impact was Joey's passion, even when it didn't always made financial sense. Yes, Lino takes decisions as well but make no mistake about it, if Joey quit - they all do

Denver Summit open Centennial Stadium today, a temp venue next to the training ground before they build the permanent one. It's a sign of the infrastructural ambition now required in #NWSL. They also capped season tix at 8,200 + have a 7,500 waiting list.

The Heineken Club in the northeast corner would likely be the first thing to go. Any significant changes to the West stand would likely require the entire stand to be taken down. The rows of seating are pre-fab concrete sitting on structural steel. Likewise, the canopy extends from the same major support. The concessions and bathrooms on the north and west are just cinder block construction.

Of course you'd still have all your construction chronicles pictures. Appreciate the response!

And the West stand backs up to Ft. McNair. You can't go further out from there. And the vertical incline could hardly be steeper than it already is (steep!). I don't know what you would do there other than put poles and have a gap in order to make the roof flat.
