Who knows where the money will come from for any Audi Field re-imagination plans, but Audi Field seemed ready for a revamp from the day it opened. Fans who have seen games there can give a much more informed opinion, but at least from a TV perspective that design left a lot to be desired. The right side stand being chopped in half to fit in that building structure was odd to say the least, and those elevated stands (to avoid flood waters?) are a blight. Sure, it was a day of celebration when DC finally got their own digs, but here’s hoping this plan sees the light of day and keeps a grass field in the process.

It doesn't look like a Populous stadium. Maybe they looked at the original design and said take that, that and that out to save money.

From one of the accounts in DC that follow this, it said it's 625 million in renovation with the team willing to pay half.

The elevated East side stands are due to a Pepco easement due to an electrical substation and underground electrical lines being on site.

The West side stands are so short because of Fort McNair and Army land use concerns.

The North side is what it is, but the building has suites, a rooftop deck, and the field level seat lounge (and held a sportsbook at one point). Who knows what happens to it in an expansion (no one's seen any plans), but that is a spot where more stands could easily go

The only thing I could see them doing is adding a roof over the two ends and replacing/upgrading the corner where the Heineken Club is now. The "notch" there used to give a great view of the Washington Memorial but that's now blocked by the high-rises across the street. You could also upgrade or replace the pitch side seats as well. There's a bit of space where the team store sits but, otherwise, I don't think there's much space to expand the stadium.

I'm watching the evening news and they're saying the proposal is for a climate-controlling roof with a cost no to exceed $620M. The roof will allow them to host up to 100 other events during the year.

There's gonna be a lot of work to do to enclose Audi Field for a "climate controlled roof" considering how much of the currently roofed parts of the stadium get air flow from the back of those sections. Not much point of a climate controlled roof if cold air still gets into the stadium at all times, for instance.

I tend to wonder if the DC council even knows what they are suggesting? Do they want a soccer stadium? Or just a year round event center? Aren’t the Commanders building a dome stadium inside the district? This sounds like a political stunt more than anything else.

The Commanders stadium will be way too big for the events that are generally held at Audi Field.

Even if the roof doesn't provide complete climate control, at least it will still amplify crowd noise.

I have always been under the impression that putting a roof over an existing stadium required increasing the footprint to allow for a support system and possibly expanded hallways. Does the DC stadium site have any extra space around it or is the compressed nature of the lot a real hindrance to any realistic expansion? And would a retractable roof require more support structure than just a lid on the place?

There's more room along the North and South stands than there is for the East or West. But there are no designs in place that I am aware of that would show how this might possibly look.
