Yes, but the date given by @canammj was the date the MLB All-Star game was played in San Diego, despite him mentioning going to the MLS All-Star game. Not to mention that date was 4 years before MLS's first season.

Did it again, brought up MLB not MLS
I also went to the Women's World Cup at Rose Bowl in addition to MLS Allstar Game (a good summer)
Sat in the corner by the goal where the PK's were taken.

I also went to all the Mens World Cup games at the Rose Bowl in 1994 (including that terrible final) and all Mens Olympic Games LA 1984 (there was no women's event). Epic mens final. 101,799 saw France beat Brazil. 2-0. I also went to the FIFA World Allstar game at the Rose Bowl in 1986 with the likes of Maradona and our man Paul Caligiuri. MLS Cup final too. Concacaf stuff. El Traffico.

Needless to say, the Rose Bowl has been epic for me.
I have also been VERY, VERY lucky to see what I have.

However, this time around, will be sitting in front of my TV for the World Cup, much like I did for the Club Cup.
Tickets, even if you could get them are ridiculous, security, crowds and who knows what else, just have taken some of the anticipation off. My couch will ok this time around.

    Issue was corrected above
You can't just say MLS (at least on my phone) I actually had to say "Major League Soccer"
It was one of those East-West versions 6-4 West.... only 23,227 fans, not a good look in such a large stadium

In other news the A League APSL final in 1992 was played at a high school stadium in Colorado in front of 4,659. Colorado Foxes beat Tampa Bay Rowdies 1-0.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure that if that event had gone better, Logan would have stuck around longer. Garber may not have been available when the position would have eventually opened, if it ever did. Who knows what path the league would have gone down in that alternate reality.

I didn't realize Sam Houston State is also playing their home football games at Shell Energy Stadium this fall while their home stadium in Huntsville, Texas is being upgraded. That's five more football games on our field this year although most are after the Dynamo season is completed.

Yeah it was opened in Nov of '97 in preparation for the Super Bowl that January. That's also when it became Qualcomm stadium. Qualcomm helped fill a hole in the budget created by local leaders who were bad at negotiating and math.

And hasn't Texas Southern University been playing the Dynamo's house for a few years?
I wonder why Sam Houston or the Gamblers aren't trying to play at U of Houston's stadium (Pretty new and football specific :)) or even Rice. I am sure the Texans dome is way too big.
It's probably capacity fits reality for attendance and maybe the rental cost was reasonable.
This stadium is almost as crazy as Audi field in DC, except that 3 of Audi's tenants are soccer and only 1 football as far as I know.

But Houston is crazy now- 2 soccer teams and 3 football teams.

My dad used to always tell me that Rice University was originally called Sam Houston Institute of Technology, but they changed it after they saw the cheerleaders uniforms... ;)

The XFL/UFL teams in Houston have played at Rice and UofH's stadiums. They are considered too big for the new UFL plan.

Houston and Arlington/Dallas are moving to the soccer stadiums in their markets for the 2026 UFL season. New teams Louisville, Columbus, and Orlando will be playing in the local soccer stadiums. DC Defenders already play at Audi Field. Only St. Louis and Birmingham will play in big football stadiums.

San Antonio, Detroit, and Memphis lost their teams since there was not a good medium sized stadium in those markets.

Shell Energy Stadium will probably only have 3 football teams for this year. Sam Houston State should be moving back home next year.

They've also been pretty open about Michigan returning as soon as Detroit FC's stadium is finished. The league turned down Eastern Michigan's offer of their 26k stadium in Ypsilanti.

So XFL is becoming to MLS what NASL was to NFL?

In that it doesn't exist anymore?
XFL and USFL merged in 2024. It is now the UFL.

If you mean being tenants in MLS stadiums, in 2026 there will be 4 UFL teams playing in MLS stadiums. There will be one in a USL/NWSL stadium (Louisville), one in a former MLS stadium (Columbus Aviators will be playing in Historic Crew Stadium), one in a former NFL stadium (St. Louis), and one in a multi-use stadium that hosts college football, high school football, USL soccer, and UFL games (Birmingham).

It is hard to compare that to the NASL since they played in a lot of different stadiums even in a single season. And they moved around a lot. I'd guess that the ratio of NFL to non-NFL stadiums was similar but the NASL often had a lot more teams than the UFL so far.

One question: Is San Antonio FC's stadium too small of a venue for IUFL? Or were the Spurs not willing to lease it to the UFL team?

It's too small, seating 8,296 at capacity.

You say that, but San Antonio averaged 11k last season and that was because they drew 14k in 1 game vs 10k in the other 3 games.

San Antonio played at the Alamodome last year, not SAFC's stadium.

    =============

I guess I will be ok with all of this if =

1/ The quality of the grass soccer fields does not go down. We have waited many, many years to get soccer quality stadiums and grass fields. Away from plastic American football fields.
Appears Dallas and DC have done pretty good job with multiple tenants (although I guess the ultimate answer to that is to ask the soccer players how their field is holding up.

2/ The rent money is decent enough- some of it may have to go into relaying the field at some point during the year or give the fields real intensive maintenance- that costs money too.

3/ Money from that rent goes back into the stadium upkeep fund or even the team/squad

4/ More competition for the local sports dollar, and football is always a competitor. Hope our attendance holds.

That the Brahmas’ attendance isn’t that far off from the capacity from Toyota Field. Especially when you consider the stadium is designed to be expandable and has soace for temporary bleachers than can increase the capacity by another thousand.
