NEW: The Mass. Senate is expected to pass a proposal on Thursday that'd enable the Kraft Group to build a @NERevolution soccer stadium in Everett. The Senate included the measure in a 124-page economic development bill it released Monday. Background here: https://t.co/rGR2czOkiw— Matt Stout (@MattPStout) July 8, 2024 Paywall so I don't know anything beyond the tweet. Anyone have details? That would be awesome for Boston.
Some highlights I saw: -Standing room only area behind one of the goals for supporters planned, and they're aiming for 25k but subject to change. -Parking limited to 75 spots near the stadium; orange line is less than a mile away and plans to extend silver line past stadium + footbridge over the Mystic River is planned connecting to the casino across the river. -Commuter rail and dock for ferries were also mentioned, but those seem a little more up in the air. -Too early to pinpoint an opening date, collecting the necessary permits alone could take two years so construction starting 2026 at the earliest (obviously won't be ready for the World Cup). -Concerns/complaints mainly site the increased traffic and competition for concerts, but they don't seem too worried about wholesale opposition.
Living in the area I can say that the location in Everett is probably as good as its going to get. Its a former/current industrial area thats being revitalized/marketed as Boston's new entertainment area. It's right outside the city and the site will be located across from the Encore Boston Casino. The MBTA (Transportation authority) desperately needs to expand into the area to maximize its potential, but I fully expect it to. There are way too many big money players around here involved in this for it not to happen IMO. I personally am extremely excited for this stadium. Boston is ready for soccer and I think it'll be obvious once this stadium is open and selling out.
Now the question with a new stadium is will there be a rebrand? I could see them getting rid of New England from the name. Hope they don't get rid of Revolution though.
You're gonna feel it hella good, so let's just keep on dancing? (Sorry...first thing that popped into my head).
FC Massachusetts United is probably what they will go with, in order to piss off absolutely everyone.
Harking back to their glorious NASL days and their new tradition of throwing a crate of tea before the games ... Boston Tea Men!
Yeah...and didn't the team eventually re-locate to Jacksonville, but keep the same nickname, thus entirely confusing people as to why a team in North Florida had anything to do with tea, in the historical context?
The New England Tea Men was a sports brand that existed at the nexus of the host market’s history and team ownership’s business interests: a reference to the Boston Tea Party gracing a club owned by Thomas J. Lipton, Inc. Brilliant!
This is fantastic news. Revs fans deserve it. Early MLS Cups were at Foxboro and the Revs had some of the best fans in the league. The originals would all have SSS and grass (Columbus, LAG, FCD, COL, SKC, NYRB, SJ, DC, NE). Boston would have a SSS in the city (as opposed to the boonies). NYC and Miami both under construction. Garber's to do list is getting shorter & shorter regarding stadium & ownership. A Fire House for Chicago, but at least they are out of Bridgeview. The Rapids spent and have stabilized and have a good team. SJ are just dire, again. Maybe start a quest to get rid of turf? Cascadia + ATL & Charlotte are it, if NE goes through. It isn't a huge need, but would be nice. Portland has made noises in the past. Vancouver was never supposed to play permanently at BC place. And maybe the Sounders deserve a home of their own with attendance "shrinking" towards 30k? The only other item would be replacing early SSS erector sets in the burbs with downtown modern stadia. Columbus did it, but that was an extreme situation. Hopefully Colorado spruces up the Dick. Again, this isn't mission critical. More of a long term goal.
