Honestly, I don't want a Toast Thread. Not before September. Not a moment sooner. Toast only when Toast Jesus makes an appearance.
All Canadian commentators including Howard Webb also didn't think it was a penalty. Webb said VAR shouldn't have notified the ref as it was not a clear and obvious error. The threshold has been high for the WC but seemed to have been lowered here. Taking 4 minutes also was too long - shows it wasn't a clear and obvious.
Did Webb say he didn't think it was a penalty or he didn't think it was a clear and obvious error? Those are two very different statements.
Webb said it was not a penalty he would have called. He also said he wouldn't called the foul on Griezman that led to the goal but doesn't blame ref since it was hard to see in real time it was a dive.
Mostly. I love it, and I also appreciate the rarity of it and that it is finite. Keeps me excited for the next one.
I'm fascinated that the only choices for when a player falls down when in contact with another player (or near contact) is foul or dive. There is a third possibility only occasionally mentioned: the player tripped/slipped on their own accord. That's what it looked like to me on the Griezman foul. Not a cynical dive, or a clumsy foul, a slip. It had started raining, after all, and players were slipping down elsewhere on the field all game. As to the handball called a penalty. In my view, the player's hands were up and he was bringing them down naturally and normally... at first. His hand speeds up to contact the ball. IMO, he purposefully handled the ball. But, all fouls (and slips) look purposeful in slow motion. So, not giving him a yellow is fine. But, the handball was completely legit, IMO.
I found myself proud of MLS's contribution to this, as well as to the sprayed lines for free kicks, which help move the game along.
I think I saw Neymar on vacation after the WC. .@neymarjr , is that you? pic.twitter.com/xqlq9B0Dku— Jay! (@JayRockerz) July 18, 2018 Thx, Jay!
So, just watched highlights of the NYRB II vs Bethlehem game. A player that started all three group stage games was playing in that game. Just thought it was funny considering where we were at years ago with soccer in the country.
