After last weeks Mexico vs. U.S. game , most of the mexican players were saying that U.S. soccer has improved and become much better. Is this an excuse to make themselfs feel better or do they really mean it? if its true then why are Mexican players still hesitant about signing with an MLS club? Omar bravo suposably has not re-signed with Guadalajara because there was a clause that could send him to Chivas USA with in his contract time. If he's getting paid the same why should it matter to him? is it that much of an insult? If U.S.soccer sucks so bad then why cant the Mexican national team beat them? I figured players didnt want to come because the money wasnt there but thats not the case any more. Can some one help me understand this, and dont try to feed me this crap about him wanting to play in Europe because he would of singed with Guadalajara by now if it wasnt for the MLS clause. I am tiered of players wanting to come here once they are washed up. Lets get player that want to be here. Shit List Omar Bravo Ramon Morales Jarred Borgetti "Big props to EL Bofo Bautista for not dissing the MLS when asked last week if he would consider playing here"
You're right, it is a contradiction. But not unexpected. I would think we are still several years away from getting respect from Mexico and Europe. I'm hoping this will happen. With continued interleague with Superliga and Concacaf, etc. it will come in time. But first, we need to get to a pay scale that matches theirs. What DC United is doing should be an eye opener. Should be interesting to see if they can do anything in Concacaf this spring.
Where did you get the info on the MLS clause? I have not heard or read anything and would like to if it exists. Or is it just a rumor? There are a lot of players that have come to MLS but did not play too much: Jorge Barrera, Pirata Castro, Jonny Garcia, Jesus Morales, Danny Osorio. These guys were not happy here. Blanco has been saying good things about MLS and that has opened up more players to have an interest in coming up north. Jared Borgetti decided not to come because he had originally said his goal was to stay in Mexico, but would come if there was no club that needed his services. Ramon Morales did not rule out the possibility of coming to MLS, he just said that he did not want to come over at this moment. Omar Bravo has not signed with Chivas GDL because if they don't give him what he wants he can leave on a FREE transfer and Vergara makes nothing and he makes more money. If he signs now, then Vergara has control. That's what it's all about, control over his future. One example is Brad Guzan. His contract is up after this season. If he does not leave in the summer, MLS and Chivas USA will not make any money because he would leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, which would save money for his future team and also pay him more money or a nice bonus for signing. So it would not be wise for Brad to sign a new contract at this moment just the same way it is not wise for Omar to sign one either.
I think most Mexican kids grow wanting to play for a "big" FMF club, then when that happens their next destination is that of any world soccer player, Europe. MLS salaries need to be more competitive in order for that to change. In the mean time, what else can the Mexican players say? I'm happy with the tie? This is a moral victory!! These college educated guys can play?!!
Exactly, why would they want to move to a foreign country that would merely match their pay at an increased cost of living. Many of these players also want to continue their chase for a spot on the national team as well. With Hugo in charge, a move to the U.S. is international suicide. Of course, they also risk a bruised ego by entering an underrated league. They cannot afford to fail in an "inferior" league.
Nothing new here, this has been said before. Thing is the media, in Mexico and the U.S, would much rather focus on negative comments to sell the rivalry. WTF, you cant be serious.. The MNT proves their worth at the World Cup son. MLS is seen as a retirement/ feeder league.. Not even the top MLS players want to stay here, so why expect the top MFL players to make the switch? If that is true, then he should be able to decide which club he wants to play for. The USMNT has the upper hand in games played on neutral ground, and while they have made it a habit of beating Mexico, in the U.S, they have NEVER won in Mexico. The last WCQ match-ups recorded a win for each NT.. Mexican players have it good, so they rarely have the need to venture abroad. There is no need for an established player to prove himself in a lesser league when he is already playing in one of the top 10 leagues in the world (as rated by FIFA). That and the players chances of joining the MNT will decrease. What does Omar Bravo have to gain by joining Chivas USA? In the MFL, he can join a team that will fight for Copa Libertadores glory. Should he just be happy to play Super Liga instead?
I love MLS, but let's be realistic. If you are any sort of player with aspirations, you have to stay or go where the league is better. And though the US team is climbing in stature, it's league has a ways to go to match the level of competition in Mexico's league. I would love to see a Mexican NT player in his prime some day in MLS, but at this point it would be career suicide for them to do it if they are still in the NT picture--as it would for any legit top 15-20 NT star from anywhere (except our own domestic stars). No need to single out Mexicans with regards to this. Even though Beckham has shown to be still a legit player at this age, there's no disputing his time for England had pretty much expired. Any Mexican NT player coming here for the forseable future will be the ones who have finished or are finishing their tenure with El Tri (Palencia, Suarez, Blanco, Davino). MLS is now demonstrating that it can match pay with the DP slot and I believe some well known name players will come with the DP slot, but the league is still lacking that competitive bite to intrigue the really elite/prime players. Nothing wrong with that... With regards to Mexico, what I would like to see MLS teams concentrate on instead is luring diamond in the rough-types, or decent/high-potential players in their prime years, who might need a change of scenery. Guys like our former JP Garcia comes to mind. There have also got to be some Juan Toja/Luciano Emilio/Ronnie O'Brien-type players in their league who might be interested in a little American adventure.
this post has info on that clause. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13792295&postcount=50
Thanks for the info Sidspaceman! Now regarding that clause, the way it sounds Vergara wants full control of Bravo, and Bravo is not willing to give it all up. It said a four year contract and that it would force Bravo to come to Chivas USA whenever they(Vergara) felt it necessary. I think it mainly has to do with control. Maybe if the clause is worded differently and make Bravo believe he has more say-so, he would be willing to sign. He refused to go to Portugal, which is on the other side of the pond, so maybe he just wants to play in Spain and that's it. Bravo and any other player needs to do what is right for them. If you are not happy where you are playing, your morale drops and you do not produce to your capacity. When players are forced to pla somewhere that they don't want to be, it just brings negativity to the club. So if he does not want to play here, then keep him out.
Wow. i never thought i'd see the day when a Mexican that wants to stay in Mexico is seen in a negative light. they arent bsing when they compliment the MLS. When has the U.S. had this good a run against Mexico or in General for that matter? Look, them not wanting to come to the league isnt a slight against the league. they are mexicans, they grew up with the Mexican League. They wanna play for teams and a league they grew up watching. its not Brain Surgery. I'd rather be a Bench player for the L.A. Dodgers than a Superstar on a Japanese league team. sorry, my opinion. too bad MLS is only going to be "Stars" on the tail end of their career. if your going to criticize the Mexicans that wont come here now - Criticize Ronaldinho, Kaka, Henry, and all those other Stars that said they'd like to end their career here. Just pray that Altidore sticks around long enough to give the league more love. eventually he's splitting for Europe. Too many good leagues. how high is MLS in that pecking order? also, where is the criticism for AMERICANS that dont play in the MLS? and for the ones that want out. Twellman anyone? homeboy is bitter.
Good posts guys, but omar is going to racing de santander of spain (1st divisoin team, for da noobs that dont know). As a hispanic I can say yes the mls and the usmnt has grown and yes I respect them more and some of their fans because their are some true class act american fans which in return I give them respect. I would also like to see a mexican player in his prime make a move the the mls, it would be pretty badass. I think with time as more and more players start coming to the mls and the league grows things will get better. Amen
