Right, but if the buying club (Man City) want Messi to play for them right away they would have to give Barca a transfer fee, I assume. Otherwise they would essentially lose half a season of having Messi. More than half really since Man City may still have everything to play for on 1 January this season the way Liverpool are stumbling along. Quite a big incentive for City to have Messi in a City jersey in January.

Let's see where Barca are a month from now, but might be worth it to offload Messi in January already if it means getting an extra €30mn or so.
