okay, since everyone is all excited about the NCAA tournament selections i needed to start a NIT tourney thread b/c it looks like that is where my buckeyes are ending up... NIT discussion. boston college fans, seton hall fans, ohio state fans, etc. come and unite...lets talk about the second biggest college basketball tournament!
As much as I'd like to agree with you, fact is that BC will be where they deserve to be, for five reasons: 1. Getting pasted by St. Joe's at home in the season opener 2. Bad loss to Kent State 3. Loss to Holy Cross 4. Loss to Northeastern 5. The only decent non-conference wins on the schedule were Iowa State, NC State, and Massachusetts. Two of those three had down years, and NC beat Wake yesterday. Three days ago I thought BC was in. Then NC State made the ACC final, Colorado State won the Mountain West, and Butler and Gonzaga lost their conf tournaments. The at-large bids disappeared around them. The only team that BC has a legit gripe with tonight is Auburn, who also played a pathetic NC schedule and did nothing special this season. But in reality neither of them deserved to go -- I'd say that Seton Hall and TX Tech were more deserving than either of them.
The one big thing against Texas Tech is their reg,. season and tourney Big 12 record is 8-11. That ain't getting it done. Who knows, BC and Seton Hall could meet in the NIT finals.
Teams that usually do well are those that want to be there. Doubt any of the NCAA bubble teams will far well.
Fill out your brackets (do people really fill out NIT brackets?). http://www.nit.org/post-bracket.cfm
The mighty Wake Forest lifted the NIT trophy a few years ago. Look were we're at now. A little something for your Heels to aspire to. --If I recall we beat a Notre Dame team coached by an ex-ACC player. I wonder what ever happened to that guy?
Opening round Monday, March 17 Valparaiso (20-10) at Iowa (15-13) Tuesday, March 18 Villanova (15-15) at Siena (19-11) Drexel (19-11) at Temple (15-15) Boston College (18-11) at Fairfield (19-11) Georgetown (15-14) at Tennessee (17-11) DePaul (16-12) at North Carolina (17-15) Wednesday, March 19 Ohio St (17-14) at Georgia Tech (14-14) Nevada at Texas Tech (18-12) Boston U (20-10) at St. John's (16-13) Seton Hall (17-12) at Rhode Island (19-10) Brown (17-11) at Virginia (15-15) UL Lafayette (20-8) at UAB (19-12) Minnesota (16-12) at St. Louis (16-13) Eastern Wash (18-12) at Wyoming (21-10) Santa Barbara (18-13) at San Diego St (15-12) Hawaii (19-11) at UNLV (20-10) Ill Chicago (21-8) at Western Mich (19-10) Wichita St (18-11) at Iowa St (16-13) Coll of Charleston (24-7) at Kent St (21-9) Providence (16-13) at Richmond (15-13)
The Buckeye fans in my office wanted me to do a NIT bracket. I told them that I don't do tourney brackets for the Not Important Tournament. I do not know of ANYONE who actually stoops to NIT tourney brackets.
Any tournament that involves the Tar Heels is important. Absolutely no exceptions. I'm surprised more people don't follow that tournament we play down in Charlotte, whatever it's called.
Obie, most of the comment I have heard supports the thesis that BC more than deserved a bid. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=7395261&BRD=1281&PAG=461&dept_id=7592&rfi=6
I hope someday, Carolina can climb out of the ACC cellar and build a pedigree on par with those of Clemson and Florida State. Doing well in NIT is the first step, I guess. We could really use a banner or two up there in the rafters. Re: BC, they could have gone either way. But when your quality win is NC State and have some pretty bad losses, you don't have much to complain about. As for winning its division, Big East was good overall, but no one really stood out. BC put itself in the position of depending on mid-major tournaments. Doo doo happens.
well you do know SOMEONE. i do a pool for them... have since middle school. it was a fun change for all of us from the NCAA ones...
But that has nothing to do with anti-Catholicism, Tom. It has to do with a reasonable debate on the merits of BC's schedule. I'm happy to talk about it on those terms, but your story on the other thread is that BC's Catholicism did them in. You have yet to prove that. Is Tennessee Catholic now? Is Texas Tech? Why did Gonzaga get an at-large bid if the NCAA has it in for Catholics?
I had BC in and Alabama out, all my other at-large picks were right on. BC was borderline, but I thought they deserved it more than Alabama - who did everything imaginable to blow it. No jaw-dropping omissions though like Butler last year. I'm glad Siena was picked for the NIT - they always do well there and pack the Knick in Albany (and MSG when they get the chance) for matches. Interesting first rounder against Nova, rematch of the 95 semifinal. How does it work after the first round? Do teams get a bye in the second round?
They are, but there should never be a crowd like that in a Big 10 school unless at Northwestern, Penn State, or Michigan.
