I think an interesting thing to do would be to overlay a map of the Louisiana Purchase onto this, because there seems to be a pretty decent correlation.

Great Lakes shipwreck maps. Rather disturbing when you think about it.

Surprisingly, Superior has the 4th most. Lake Michigan has the most.

I've been looking at this map a lot lately, as our air traffic control system melts down just in time for the holidays.

Link goes to the web site FlightAware, which tracks flights, but includes this "misery map" showing what percentage of flights are delayed or cancelled at big hub airports. Sometimes the delays are due to weather, but not today.
