Mods: Can we change the name of this board to "The Majorship" ? I just feel smarter and a little better about myself, and our league, when I say or write it that way. Of course, it should always be spoken or read with a reverent tone, gravely serious and slightly awed. The Majorship...
We can, but only if we refer to one another as gaffers... and when we go to the market we call the trunk a "boot"... and we crown you King Noah... and and and... lots of warm beer for all! Viva England! (or something like that.)
Majorness? Hmm. Well how about "Its Most Majorness" ? Like: "Player X made 73 appearances in Its Most Majorness before heading overseas to try his luck in the Premiership." Sounds great.
Re: Majorness? The majorship is better, I think, but only if we get Nationwide to sponser our lower divisions: I'd like to here people talk about the Nationwide A-League, the Nationwide D-3 league, and the Nationwide PDL. Then we'd have a real league.
Nope sorry, upper management is unflexible when it comes to renaming forum titles. They already turned down my recommended. "Kickass-Kickball Association"
Well, if England can have the Barclaycard Premiership, shouldn't we get a league sponsor for our Majorship? I'm a big fan of the General Motors Majorship, or General-Major for short.
In the US we use acrynyms. MLS works. The Major League works as well. But I'm just not down with this "Majorship" stuff. I think the Premiership is actually a word, or at least close enough to sound fine to the neophyte's ear. The Majorship reminds me of "The Mother Ship" and with all of the alien, un-American, kooky crap that soccer gets already, I don't think it's such a cool idea. -Tron
I think we should approach Carnival Cruise Lines. The Carnival Cruise Lines Majorship. I like it. This could change everything.
Re: Re: "The Majorship" Oooooo. That's good. It's American sounding. But then again, it doesn't quite trade in subliminal notions of aristocracy like "Premiership" does. How 'bout "Kickass-Kickball Konfederation"? Tron's right about our affinity for acronyms, and league marketing needs a "Southern Strategy."
I think the league should sell its name to Jenna Jameson. ESPN would definitely cover the league if they could start a report: "DC United is on top of Jenna Jameson after last night's win."
The only time I think I've ever heard "premiership" used in a sentence is in the sense of someone assuming the premiership of a country (i.e. premiership is to premier as presidency is to president). My understanding is that the official name of England's top football league is the "FA Premier League". However, the sponsor, Barclaycard, thinks of itself as a more "exclusive" credit card company compared to the plebian Visa and Master Card, so rather than the "Barclaycard Premier League" we have the "Barclaycard Premiership".
It was called the Premiership before it was sponsored by Barclaycard. As has been said before "premier" or "premiership" (no, nobody in England knew why it was called the Premiership either) is not a euphamism for "oh aren't we so great, far better than all those other leagues in the world", it just means the top division (as there was already a division 1 something rather better than calling it division 0 was required).
C'mon, it's annoying as hell. The "Premiership" WAS the 1st Division -- before it broke away financially and rebranded itself. It's the same old 1st Division basically still, but with more money and less xenophobia, thanks to satellite television and the Bosman ruling. It IS a pretentious name and a pretentious term. It's really irritating when fans, esp. American ones, parrot the term. Glad we can discuss it, BTW. I wasn't trying to be subtle in my sarcasm, but what do you call people who are fooled ALL the time? I mean, Preparation H. Christ...
I never said it wasn't. But I've noticed that Barclaycard seems to always use "Premiership", rather than "Premier League". If you can find a link where Barclaycard uses "Premier League" please post it. http://www.4thegame.com/ The FA, who I would think have the official say-so over this, predominantly refer to it as the "FA Premier League" in their official publications. However, I have noticed them occasionally use Premiership instead. A slip of the tongue, perhaps? http://www.thefa.com/
well why would they if the league is officially called The Premiership? Maybe it's something to do with the initial league (which everyone assumed would be called the premier league) being sponsored by the makers of "Carling Premier" beer, and they wanted a name that would emphasise that the "premier" referred to the footballing product, not the brewers one. I don't own any FA official publications but I did two searches on the site, one for "premiership" and one for "premier league". Premier league won by 15 pages of stories to 14, but that also includes stories about the women's premier league and the other premier leagues in the non-league pyramid. If the league dropped the "ship" and just became the premier league nobody would be bothered. it may effectively be the old Division 1, but the old division 1 (at an organisational level) still existed and is was called division 1, so they clearly couldn't call their new league division 1 as well. The precedent was set in Scotland 15 years earlier when they went from 2 divisions of 18 clubs to 3 of 10,14 & 14 and called their new top division the premier. Various semi-pro league also called their top divisions the permier for quite a while previously, so it's not as if the FA were exactly breaking new ground with the premier tag. I just get the feeling that many over there see the name premier(ship) as an arrogant statement of being the best in the world or something like that.
Please provide a link (if you can) showing that the league is officially called "The Premiership." As far as I've been able to discern, the Football Association calls the league The Premiership only when used informally in match reports and the like, and in conjunction with sponsors, i.e. the "Barclaycard Premiership" and the "Carling Premiership". In official FA reports, its always the "Premier League", not the "Premiership". Take a look at the FA Premier League's official website. It's Premier League this and Premier League that. Practically the only place you see Premiership used is in conjunction with the "Barclaycard Premiership" http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.rac?command=forwardOnly&nextPage=homepage_sat&today=0
