I don't have enough money to be a betting man, but if I did, I'd bet Giovanni Savarese is the Revs' pick.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) September 19, 2017 Yes, that means Bob Kraft (of Sunil Gulati fame)'s team would be hiring the New York Cosmos' head coach.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) September 19, 2017 Why do I doubt this?
Can confirm and say George Mason head coach Greg Andrulis has been discussed as a possible replacement in 2018. https://t.co/1cK0tVv3jh— MLS Transfers (@MLSTransfers) September 19, 2017 I more readily believe this. The Drooler ...
While Heaps needed firing, it's only worthwhile if they raise the coaching bar at NE significantly. If they don't...well, too bad you can't fire Kraft. Because you're just rearranging the deck chairs....
A guy can be likeable and still be terrible at his job. It has always baffled me how the Krafts would wait so much to replace a guy with not great success (to say the least) having the patriots as a comparisson in the same backyard.
Jay Heaps' Wikipedia page is already updated. I find it interesting that if you search for "Jay Heaps" and "New eNgland Revolution" on duck-duck-go, you get as many articles about his hiring as his firing in the first page of search results. I guess people didn't write about him very often...
Was Heaps terrible? He certainly wasn't great, and was having a bad year, but was he terrible, as in from day one and continuing through to today...?
He was mediocre. Mediocrity shouldn't last for long on a professional team (in my humble opinion), again taking into account the success of their neighbors.
because savarese seems to smart to take such a rubbish job with a rubbish organization when he knows he can get a much better one.
Perhaps, but there is a history between Mike Burns (who somehow still has his job) and Savarese. They played together in both New England and (briefly) San Jose. Relationships matter a lot in American soccer, for better or worse.
No reason to rush. Honestly, the rest of the season can be done by an interim coach. But being the first organization out openly collecting résumés is an advantage if handled right. (Wait, it's the Revs...)
Least Olsen has a comparable PPG since the start of 2015 with the coaches that have been fired. Curtin has 0.12 PPG less than the worst fired coach's PPG and we know he isn't going anywhere. Hell our TD keeps saying how he is doing a great job and that fans should come see practices so we can know he is doing a good job. Here is a list of PPG since 2015 for fired coaches this year and some other coaches as well: Vanney - 1.69 Marsch - 1.66 Vermes - 1.48 Robinson - 1.43 Berhalter - 1.36 Heaps - 1.31 Mastroeni - 1.30 Olsen - 1.29 Kinnear - 1.27 Curtin - 1.15
Your list is missing 2017 firings Cassar (1.24) and Onalfo (1.10). Onalfo bumps Curtin out of last place, but he had only 60% of one season before being pulled, not over three.
I realized after I did it that I should have specified mid to late 2017 firings. Onalfo wouldn't have been used anyway because his stint was way too short to be meaningful for this comparison. Yeah, he may have been terrible for years to come but he wasn't given that opportunity. Everyone on that list had 90+ games except for Kinnear with 85. That is enough to give a good long term picture. You can have one bad year (Berhalter) and not look too terrible and you can have one good year (Pablo) and not look great. Curtin has been consistently bad for 3 years now in picking up points. So bad in fact that he would need Philly to have a better than TFC year next season to even come close over 4 years to what Heaps has done over the last 4 years PPG wise.
q Not unique to the US. Take a look at the guys who get recycled in most of the EPL. Back on topic: Does Kraft have a younger generation that is more passionate about soccer? Is there a chance for someone to emerge who is going to start driving MLS 3.0 decisions, starting with the next hire?
