The Life of Bryan: Reynolds at Westerlo

I think that Rangers would be a very interesting choice. Not for the same reason as @m vann Rangers are a stronger, wealthier and better team who will compete in European competition pretty much every year. They normally are much better than the majority of teams they play, so Reynolds will be able to play more of an attacking role which is what he has developed into. The downside is overall the SPL is a weaker league than the JPL. Outside of 4 matches a year vs Celtic, and if Hearts can keep their team together and make another run at the title (doubtful and I am still mad about the handball call) how much progression will a defender on one of the two dominant teams in a league actually see. It should be an increase in his pay.

 

I think most of us would prefer to see Reynolds test himself in a stronger league than the SPL.

SPL moves don’t really excite at this point for (most) YA fans.

That being said you can only go to clubs willing to pay the transfer fee and Rangers are a big and historic club in Europe who will likely triple his wages.

Could it get him back into the usmnt picture? Possibly. Westerlo is just such a small stage.

 

This alone is sufficient justification for the move. Despite finishing only 3rd, Rangers will be seeded for the EL 3rd round qualifier. Win that and they're in EL group stage. Lose and they enter the Conference group stage.

Even the Conference League contains some quite serious teams from the Top 5 (Fiorentiina, Mainz, Palace, Strasbourg, Rayo Vallecano last season) and good sides from the Tier 2 leagues (AZ, AEK Athens, Sparta Prague, Samsunspor, Rijeka) this season. Whatever about his MNT hopes, all of those teams are a vast improvement on what he'd face in the Jupiler next season, never mind the SPL.

Rohl did a creditable job at Sheffield Wednesday in extraordinarily trying circumstances and vastly improved Rangers this season. They could qualify for the EL but the Conference knockout stages are almost a gimmie.

It's a no-brainer of a move IMO

Would he be getting paid more to play in a weaker league?

 

The SPL is overall a weaker league than the JPL, but he could make much more at Rangers than Westerlo. Westerlo's stadium holds less than 9k. Rangers are almost always in European Competition, while Westerlo has not played in Europe since their rebirth.

 

It may be a weaker league but Rangers are a far, far bigger club. Westerlo's estimated fixed wage bill is €9 million per year. Rangers' is almost €29 million.

Since Rangers can and often do qualify for UEFA ball and certainly win domestic trophies, their players can expect a bonus or two in a season. Westerlo don't so their players can't.

If he moves for the speculated transfer fee, it's not hard to see him making €1m a year

 

Rennes vs Gers is a bit of a dilemma for him: Gers are a massive club where he will win silverware and play UEFA ball but Rennes are Top 5, in the Conference and make the EL pretty often. They're a better shop window and the money would be about the same.

 

Rumored transfer fee is around 5 million Euros. If that is true, Westerlo is going to prefer the Rennes deal over Rangers.

 

This article says it is a 3.8 million Euro bid from Rennes.

 

Roma has a 25% sell on from Westerlo.

What do you think about the move Brian?

 

Just leaving Westerlo is a positive. He was there too long.

It's a good chance for him to take another step forward and he's far more prepared for another shot at top league than when he went to Roma (when he was still getting used to playing right back after developing as a winger).

I am not 100% confident that he's going to be a full-time starter, but he is a tough player to gauge.

He has a lot of work to do in order to get into the USMNT picture at right back. But who knows who is even going to be the coach in a month. That person might have entirely different ideas.

 

Yea, I won’t pretend to know the RB situation at Rennes (but I will soon learn). 4.5 million for a mid sized French club isn’t crazy but its also not nothing.

He will definitely get a fair shake.

In terms of USMNT I think its important to cultivate as much depth as possible playing at the highest level possible. So, I think the move is exciting.

With Dest there is no 1 for 1 replacement. He maybe the only profile of his kind in international soccer.

So, Reynolds, like Scally just presents a depth profile for a coach to have available and, hopefully, competenly deputize, kind of like Scally does already being a completely different profile then Dest.

 

He'll need to be. At €4.5 million he'd be the 2nd or 3rd most expensive arrival at Ibrox in each of the last 3 seasons but it's a run-of-the-mill transfer fee for Rennes: they've paid that or more for 9 and 14 players in each of the last 2 seasons.

He'd arrive at Rangers as the presumptive starter but not here and Rennes aren't short on defensive depth either. With 2 RBs on the books and 8 CBs, two of whom can play RB, he will have to expect to battle for his place even if some of those CBs will surely leave this summer.

The challenge of joining a Top 5 side lies in the level of competition and Rennes have 4 players at the World Cup. This is a major step up in competition for PT

 

Read into this as much as you want - Westerlo had their first pre-season friendly today. Reynolds was not on the match-day squad for Westerlo.

 

Have we gotten confirmation from the club that the move is complete? I can't find any official announcement from the club, just news stories that he's about to sign for them

 

Nothing from either club yet.

 

As @RobtheAggie has noted, there's been nothing from either party yet and I wouldn't expect anything until the deal is finalized.

He's not that big a name or key of a signing for Belgian, let alone French media to follow the story much and both clubs are relatively small in their respective leagues. If he was going to Rangers . . .

 

Much of the Belgian media has been focusing on other stories over the past few days as you can imagine. That being said, what normally happens in that nations media with regards to transfer rumors is a wide smattering of reports, then nothing until it happens, unless it is someone going to the EPL or a Belgian youth player going for lots of money, normally to Germany.
