There was also a former newspaper building in a primo spot downtown. But they wanted something like 70 mil for the land and his budget was 200 mil for land and stadium.
I thought their big "downtown" stadium site concept that got shot down by everyone in Austin was Butler Shores at Town Lake Central Park along Lady Bird Lake.
You are correct sir. They were in love with that site from the beginning and paid for some expensive renderings: And the UT plan was a Greeley project; he told everybody down there that the Crew were in dire straits and had to move someplace in time for the 2019 season, and if Austin couldn't come up with a venue for them to play in while other arrangements were being made, then Precourt would move the team to some other city. There was an alternative plan to have them play at a AA baseball field. (The Austin Diamonds or some such). He was just trying to stampede the city council into approving the stadium plan quickly without actually looking at it. It was all a bald-faced lie, but a lot of folks bought it.
There was also a proposal to build a stadium at a fairgrounds. And one at the racetrack, though I think that was for the USL team that replaced the one who moved to Orlando.
Moved. (It’s a lot easier to look up something if it’s in a logical place than some random old game thread.)
Neither of these were Precourt deals. Once Butler Shores went down, they put together a list of other city owned land that included McKalla. Guerrero Park in downtown East Austin was the only other serious option on that list.
Looks like we missed commemorating the seventh anniversary of the Grant Wahl tweet a few days ago. Imagine this place was a madhouse that night.
I posted something in advance in the "This Day In History" thread. The original thread is right here. As the tweet happened late in the night, I don't believe the shit really hit the fan until the next day. Re-reading the first few pages, I totally forgot about "MLS to Detroit" which was on the radar back then. There's a planned upgrade to BigSoccer in the coming...well, the admins know, but try to track them down. One thing that would be good is if the times of posts remain after the first day or so. At times like this, I wish the times of posts were easily accessible.
Yeah, you could say we didn't react very well to it. Then we strapped on our combat boots, dug our heels in, and declared war on Preco*rt.
7 years on, 2 MLS Cups, other trophies, countless successes, and yet we still haven’t seen Austin FC or Precourt in Columbus. Will they ever schedule that game? Or did Garber declare it off limits? I don’t know if I’ll bring my youngest son to that game because the language will be out of control!
It'll happen. You play every in-conference opponent twice. That's 28 matches. That only leaves six matches per season against teams from the West, and only three of those are at home.
But do we know HOW those six are assigned? Example: The NFL has a system where the second-place team in the AFC East plays the similarly-placed teams from other divisions.
It was a slow roll -- moving from the incredulous to the realization that this had been in motion for many, many years. It wasn't for a little while that things really kicked off when a different Austin Bro was going around bragging about how they were going to rape women at Crew Stadium. Thinking about it, who snapped a picture of Two Buttons at CMH at the Southwest terminal waiting on a flight to Austin? That was decently before the Wahl Tweet IIRC.
A very weak and uninspired selection for the new head coach. Obviously they were trying to hire someone with a salary on the lower end of the MLS coaches spectrum. They end up with someone who was fired by their in-state rival earlier this season for poor performance, after being on the job slightly more than two years. Good Luck!
Estevez was an assistant in Columbus under GGG then went to the USMNT with him I'd guess he was recommended to Fratboy by his old pal Greggggg. Plus as you say he works cheap.
He was the mystery hire from Spain to the Crew. I believe his first title was Director of Methodology or some made up name.
Just imagine if the Columbus Crew were as ambitious as Austin FC. The Crew would have five titles in five years!
https://www.usatoday.com/story/ente...-look-alike-contest-austin-texas/76564501007/ There was a Glen Powell lookalike contest in Austin. The winner got free queso for a year.
