Got to get this one off my chest. After the game with Havant & Waterlooville Sky Sports News showed the footage of non league players celebrating with their fans. I remember thinking how full the away end was and how empty the rest of the ground was. Later another news channel interviewed Andy Gray whilst showing the same footage. He made a point about how great the Liverpool fans were for staying to applaud the Havant & Waterlooville players!! As the words left his mouth I could see the Liverpool fans leaving in the corner of the screen. The next thing I know I see this article in The Independent. Now the few Liverpool fans that did stay did applaud and they should be commended for that. But the numbers of fans who supposedly stayed (as implied by the above sources) is way over the top. The attendance at the match was 42,566 which is a good number. 6000 of those were away fans. How can Liverpool get such an accolade for praising Havant & Waterlooville at the end when the players left the pitch and the majority of the fans left too? All the noise and cheer came from the away fans, which I must say were immense for a non league side. It may see like a petty thing but I just don't like seeing the same clubs get such a massive amount of praise for things they haven't done. Especially when we should be concentrating on the massive task that Havant & Waterlooville achieved. EDIT: http://www.gigshot.co.uk/hawks/index.html Fourth from last picture from the end. Not great but it just about shows how empty the stands were. The following pictures show the away fans at the same time.
Agree. Although it kills me to think back to the 06 FA Cup final, one thing that was said by the pundits the next day was that it was one of the few occasions in recent times when the losing set of supporters stayed in the ground after the match. In fact our support is mentioned in Gerrard's book.
I remember when we got a bit of a scare off Emley and we clapped their equaliser. They also did a lap of honour to warm applause from three sides of the ground.
West Ham and Liverpool carry a similar reputation for having such commending fans but I just can't see what Liverpool have done in recent times to deserve it. It may seems harsh to any Liverpool fans reading this but compared to occasions such as George Best's memorial and the welcome Tevez got the other week all sense of sportsmanship that Liverpool (fans and club) ever had seems to have vanished. Makes me proud to be a Hammer. Our fans make me more glad each day.
