And if you doubt the value of someone like Adams whose primary role is disruptor and ball winner and secondary role is ball circulation, the impact can be substantial when you are elite like Adams. Here is Bournmouth’s PL record when Adams starts versus when he’s been unavailable: Adams Starts: 23 W, 13 L, 11 D — 48.9% W% — 1.70 Pts/G Adams Doesn’t Start: 18 W, 22 L, 12 D — 34.6% W% — 1.27 Pts/G I think you are underestimating how elite Adams is at what he does and how big of an impact that can have on a team.
He may not be the style you like but Adams does not struggle with non CONCACAF midfields. Have you watched him in the Bundesliga and EPL? I'll agree he is limited but he does what he does at an almost world class level. The only reason he isn't playing for a top 6 team in England is because he is limited going forward and is too often injured. But even with that limitation he is far from struggling against non-CONCACAF teams.
I'm still just astonished at his success and the high regard he's been given. He was a just from Alabama and got the move to Venezia but was overlooked by Busio and then just dominated Serie B and now he's a regular starter for a big team in France.
When he was at FC Dallas the potential was obvious. That he's seemingly achieved a lot of what was possible isn't something most players do. There's so many we see it in them but for whatever reasons just never happens. I think he still has a lot of room for improvement as I think he has a lot of fire but isn't "the" guy yet but could be.
Agree on the injured part but how often did Roy Keane get forward? Much of Tyler's attacking limitations come from Leeds' fragile defence behind him and having to stay at home and mind the shop while other Bournemouth's midfielders and the full backs push forward to create overloads. He's doing what his teams require. Things would change a fair bit at a big budget team with more and better options around him
I see where you’re coming from, but he’s just a shitty passer. Has been since he was with Red Bull II in USL. Whether that’s a natural limitation or a consequence of coming up in a system that doesn’t really value quality passing, impossible to say.
Different game today. Top clubs want a 6 that can create something off of possession. When Tyler gets an assist, it's usually by winning a ball high up the pitch, when the opponent is stretched forward. Then he can make a simple ball to someone like Kluivert to shoot from. He isn't going to snake one through a defense that has packed the back, which is what the big clubs are often up against.
And yet, Chelsea really wanted him until he failed his physical. I think folks are exaggerating his limitations.
The other poster claimed that "Top 6" clubs wouldn't be looking for someone with Adams' skillset. I just gave evidence to the contrary.
https://www.fotmob.com/players/729769/tyler-adams OK I realize that I made it sound like I expect 6s to be 10s or something, but Adams is in the 8th percentile for expected assists and 4th percentile for chance creation of DMs at high level (and in the 10th percentile for touches in the opposition box), meaning that almost everyone contributes more to the offense than he does. I don't consider N'Golo Kante to weaken the argument much, that's like a flipped version of saying that coaches expect even attacking players to play some D and having someone pipe up with "what about Messi?" I never liked the phrase 'exception that proves the rule' but the existence of a prominent outlier often just brings the trend into bold relief.
Tessmann struggled (with the rest) apparently in a 3-1 loss to Strasbourg ... Tanner Tessmann – 3 The USMNT midfielder embodied Lyon’s struggles to match their opponents’ pressing and intensity in the engine room. Dispossessed countless times, involved in Strasbourg’s second goal and hooked before the hour mark (58').
