ended 2-0 with a 90th minute goal. Didn't see any reports of injury concern, so seems like just a tactical/performance change. Worked out either way.
Agreed. I had the game on while working and picked my head up a few times to watch intently or when his name was called. Tessman looked fine to me. He didn't look "off" or anything just average. He was certainly involved and not a pedestrian. I assume he was yanked due to tactical reasons but he was far form having a stinker. BTW....for what it's worth.... FotMob rated him a 7.3 20/22 completed passes 1 shot on target 2 touches in the box 2 passes into final third 2/2 on accurate long balls 1 blocked shot 2/3 successful dibbles 1 tackle 3 clearances 3/5 duels won 3/3 aerial duels won
It was probably just planned rotation. They started a couple of backups and have a quick turnaround with another game on Sunday.
Tessmann started today, but he came off after just 15’. Apparently this was a tactical substitution, not due to injury (thankfully), as Lyon lost a player to a red card at just 7’.
Odd it may be, but they held on for 82 minutes to get a 0-0 draw away from home so it was rather well-judged
Certainly, if a draw is satisfying. Not sure the defense was any better with a player other than Tessmann in the game, but IMHO, Tessmann's presence could have won it.
It's the chicken or egg choice. Do you have a better defense when the ball is in your offensive end more with lesser defenders or in your defensive end with better defenders? I prefer to keep it far away from goal but I'd have to have at least some strong confidence that my defenders weren't horrible defending counters.
The red card was for their RB and the substitute was ex-Arsenal guy Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who's a full-time RB these days. so a like-for-like replacement and from the highlights, they went from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-1. Maitland-Niles' decision-making is suspect, especially in the final third, but he has plenty of pace, which Tanner doesn't. He'd have offered a lot more ability to carry and progress the ball when Lyon were countering Tanner will start the next game. I mean, he'll be well-rested, won't he?
Two good tests coming up this week, and Tessmann should get plenty of playing time: Thursday at Real Betis (Europa League) Sunday at home v PSG +++ International Break +++
It was Tessman's weak pass that prompted the rash challenge that led to the red. That may have played a part in his substitution.
https://www.socceramerica.com/tyler-adams-scores-first-premier-league-goal-later-leaves-with-injury/ ----------------------- Tanner Tessmann exited Lyon’s 0-0 tie at Brest in the 15th minute after it lost right back Hans Hateboer in the 8th minute to the fastest red card in its history. Hateboer was sent off for a challenge on Pathé Mboup after Tessmann’s soft pass failed to reach him. Lyon’s sideline coach, Jorge Maciel, called out Tessmann for the bad pass. “Such passes in this situation are unacceptable, and they lead to mistakes. We need to be confident that the pass will reach our teammate. It was an unnecessary error when we were performing reasonably well in the match.” --------------------- Ouch!
Do we know if Fonseca participates in this sort of in-game decision? His nine-month suspension concludes at the end of November.
The entire idea of a touchline ban is to prevent that sort of thing from happening... that said, PMGO allows banned managers to use phones / radios to communicate with the rest of the staff during a match. They are not supposed to communicate with the players directly (including pre-game / halftime). Not sure if FFF / whatever FFF's version of PMGO is (le PMGO?) has a similar carve-out, but even if they don't, I'm sure that OL are skirting the line as closely as possible...
Usually it doesn't suggest putting the defense in the hospital. It was a bad pass but kinda lame to call him out as though he was responsible for that bad tackle too. The pass was a mistake but somehow it's unacceptable because it leads to mistakes? Okay.
I watched some of the second half. Absolutely gruesome play. So many misplayed passes, horrible positioning, nobody reliably checking for the ball, slow motion attempts to play the ball withing the penalty area led to interceptions, disorganized defense, poor clearances, injurious tackles. Horrible. I couldn't bear watching more than about 15 min. No reflection on Tessmann. It just left me thinking that he must love the call-ups to the USMNT where the unforced error rate is pretty low these days and there is strong evidence that the players think about what is about to or should happen next.
What a bummer dropping points at the death to PSG. Rated worse than the dude who got a red card on Fotmob. Ouch.
