I think it's provisional in the sense that they will only be relegated if they can't come up with the money they say they'll be able to generate from player sales and other transactions by the end of the season?
Yes, this. Textor has said he wasn't worried because he thinks he can raise enough by selling either Botafogo players or some of his stake in Palace if player revenues don't make up the difference. I don't believe anything Textor says, but they do have options to avoid relegation. If they actually get relegated, it's because Textor is a huge asshole.
The problem with going into a meeting like this saying "we can make up almost $100m by selling players" is that when other clubs know you're $100m in the hole, their bids start shrinking...
There is absolutely no way in gods green earth Lyon are going to avoid relegation due to their finances. Those numbers are insurmountable in one season. I guess Tanner's foray at Lyon will be short lived. Really sucks to see arguably the beast team in France (historically speaking) go through this. But apparently so are Nantes, Lens, Auxerre, Le harve, Montpellier, and I think a few others. They havent been given the nasty relegation hammer yet, but it seems to loom large.
I don’t think they need to pay back the full 500m. The commission held the hearing because their debt jumped by like 150m in one year. My understanding is that they need to get their debt down to a reasonable level, not $0. then again these is what I’ve gathered from google translating sports journalists tweets about the meeting. even $200m is doable before the end of the season, especially if part of his sake in Palace is up for sale.
It's so weird. It's like all these great businessmen out there are just actually book-cooking liars circulating laundered money. My innocence has been ripped from my chest like Bob Fosse's chest bone on a giant silver screen...
As my old business finance prof told us, the key to success in business is to own enough money to sink a battleship: so long as you owe enough money to sink three
Doesn't matter that much to Tanner. Big name players on high salaries will be sold off cheaply in the January sales and cheaper, younger talent promoted to the First XI. If Lyon are relegated, that process will only accelerate and they have more than enough younger talent, plus what the academy is producing, to bounce back and guys like Tannner - young, didn't cost that much, plenty of D1 experience - will be expected to drive that process. If it works for Lyon, Tanner's back in Ligue 1 inside a year. If it doesn't, he'll be bought by a Ligue 1 side anyway. TBH I found the move to Lyon a bit puzzling when he had so many good Serie A suitors. It's hard to imaging that Lyon didn't buy him with the above in mind
There is, to be clear, 0 chance that Lyon plays in Ligue 2 next year. Lot of iffy translations and lack of context on the current situation are missing that it's pretty straightforward for them to meet the bar necessary to stay in Ligue 1.
I think he is now a regular starter, but was kept out until minute 79 to facilitate recovery from the international games and associated travel. The timeline for Tessmann was similar to Pulisic's today.
First game after the international break, which included starts and required trans Atlantic travel? It'd have been hard to believe if he'd started and staying on the bench wouldn't have been any surprise.
The reality is it's still murky whether he's a 1st choice starter. Last time he was in the lineup was 3 games ago, & it wasn't a 1st choice team. Their manager seems to have a very liberal rotation policy. Matic should be put out to pasture, but that hasn't taken place.
I think it's clear that he's not a locked in starter and hasn't been to this point in his time at Lyon. It's still early in the season, though, and he basically just got there. He's been putting in good performances, so that's the important thing.
I've seen many, many coaches keep playing a legend after they start fading. Not sure what's harder for the coach - dropping him because he values his previous work for you personally or because of his respect in the locker room.
I can see wanting to play and start more often. But PSV will want to get market value for him and that objective is probably incompatible with playing and starting more.
