Maybe a play on the clint Eastwood movie?? Gran torino. Obviously about the car. Hehe Torino an old classic club with rich history.
I always wondered if they got the name for the film and car Gran Torino from the Grande Torino team that perished in a plane crash at Superga. Superga air disaster -
Not sure the original was a northerner although I take the point that Southerners might not appreciate the more general use of the term.
It's probably time they let it go. Civil War was almost 200 years ago. They lost. Get over it. (And I say this as a descendant of slave owners who fought in the "War of Northern Aggression".)
I agree but Alabama is deep south so who knows how they feel? I sometimes feel it's more of if everyone let them do it and ignored it they'd quit on their own but keep it going because everyone tells them they can't. Basic kids vs parents stuff.
Here is a translation of the text from their Instagram post: If you saw at least one Venezia game in these playoffs you surely noticed a 6-foot-2-inch regista. One capable of interpreting the game in a modern way. One with a right foot both elegant and precise when handling the ball. A player who is decisive in both defense and attack, and an undisputed master in the midfield. That player is Tanner Tessmann. He turns 23 in September, and he is the face of a young team that gambled on talent. The player definitively established himself this season as a 360-degree midfielder during a season in which he played a leading role with 7 goals and 3 assists. He showed his full maturity when the stakes were high; when the other 21 players on the pitch were treating the ball like a hot potato, Tessmann was the exception, providing an essential balance. Along with his aforementioned attacking qualities, he has also added excellent defensive positioning and consistency in the final third. A box-to-box regista with the imposing size of a defensive midfielder. Another of the American’s qualities we should mention is his capacity to read the game. He is the one who dictates the team’s rhythm. He decides when they accelerate and when they catch their breath, while neatly managing every phase of possession. In the semifinal return leg against Palermo he confirmed his status as a game-breaker in minute 4 with a long-distance bomb – another one of his trademarks – that nipped in the bud any hopes of a rosanero comeback. The triumphal ride through the playoffs crowned the growth of this 2001-born player. Tanner Tessmann is one of many talents forged in the Serie B; a long list that includes such names as Bernabé, Bonny, Busio, and Da Cunha. Now he’s ready to confirm his status at the international level. The USA team has yet to reveal the roster for the 2024 Copa America, but Tessmann’s hopes are high. And for good reason.
This article, which discusses a possible Torino transfer, states Tessmann's current value is €7M. https://www.notiziecalciomercato.eu/calciomercato/venezia-toro-tessmann-offerta/
I don't follow Serie B so I can't comment about his abilities, but this quality of moral courage is priceless in football. If that's what he's like, even with quite ordinary abilities he could go very far.
Wow, that’s glowing praise. But I have to ask…isn’t a box to box regista a contradiction in terms? I guess the writer is saying that Tanner helps with the buildup like a regista, then transitions to BTB to make the final pass or to shoot. Anyway, the description makes me imagine him as a player who is a B at every single aspect of playing central midfield, but not an A or a C at anything. Those are great to have because a club can pair him with any kind of specialists and still have balance.
Watched usa v Colombia Tanner better than the ones that played. Il tess has a footballing brain. Not many American players have this trait, set of skill. Too bad berhalter clueless. Lega pro coaches are tactically superior
Tanner is exactly where he should be heading up the Olympic squad. That’s plenty of international duty after a long season.
Wasting his time with amateurs. Nobody cares about Olympic soccer. I'll be paying close attention to our midfield during copa
But that ignores his ability with either foot to do long, extremely accurate switches and also long shots with either foot. I would agree with you on the other things but add that players tend to bounce off of him when trying to tackle him but I'm not sure that's an ability but I don't know what I'd call it. I did notice when he was with FCD that he was always one of those guys who would get agitated when the team was behind and redouble his effort. That fits in to those comments about him being the loan player to look good when things were tight. Let him play and lead at the Olympics and if he does well he'll get his chance to move into a real opportunity with the full team.
You mean coming into a match 35 minutes in vs Uzbekistan where none of thé USA players looked good? Have you watched him before or since?
Not enough to have a strong opinion. But, playing well in second divisions is always tougher to gauge. I am excited by his potential contribution but not sure we can say he is better than Cardoso, Reyna and McKennie. Rest are less clear. what are your thoughts on the original statement I responded to?
