More backroom changes at Liverpool, with the club's assistant goalkeeping coach Jack Robinson also set to leave this summer. (David Lynch)
I think it’s fair to say that pretty much Klopp’s entire backroom staff is gone. You can’t help feeling the way the last 2-3 months have played out, most professional would see it as a natural ending of a chapter and time for a new challenge in pastures new. Regardless of how dynamic and innovative Slot will be, I think, top to bottom, there’s the aching need for fresh blood, fresh approach, fresh new day.
this is a lot of disruption, affecting most if not all of the playing side of the LFC operation. I hope that Slot's team all speak English - at least well enough to get their initial messages across, but hopefully they can communicate with the entire squad sufficiently well to establish good relationships / rapport from the beginning. having Virgil Cody and Ryan in place will really really help avoid misunderstandings when nuanced ideas need to get transmitted, but tbh my guess is that - like most Europeans - Slot's team's language skills including English is better than most of the drivel we're able to wring out on here.
I’m presuming that FSG’s assumption is that the last Klopp coach to leave turns out the lights and leaves the keys with the caretaker?
TAW had an interview with a Dutch reporter who covers Feyenoord and is also a Liverpool supporter. He said Slot is totally fluent in English and that English is the language of the Feyenoord dressing room. So sounds like communication shouldn't be an issue.
I’ve seen this pop up a few times. At a bit of a loss to understand why it’s a question. I cannot think of any Dutch players who are not fluent in English and the same with their managerial cohort. It’s my understanding that pretty much most Dutch people, certainly under the age of 50, are pretty fluent. I don’t remember this being an issue when Klopp came on board and while it came up with Rafa slightly, it was never a problem.
I have huge respect for the ability of most Europeans to flawlessly switch from language to language, especially English. my comments weren't about Slot himself, but about his extended team (most of whom we never get to hear speak) and the need for language subtlety and nuance when communicating new ideas (re tactics, positioning etc) to a group of players, a number of whom don't have English as a first language .... and the potential for initial relationships not to click. I'm not losing sleep over it.
Surely what applies to Slot’s extended team is the same? All Dutch (yes?), brought up in football for 20-25+ years, speak English fluently like most Dutch people?
Very specialised, niche area. There are apparently only 2 people in Europe qualified and 1 in the Obscure Languages Department of Harvard, but he’s an Evertonian.
He's just so genuine - basically talks like a normal non-famous person. Accepts his shortcomings, near misses, screw-ups, and then deflects praise.
Yes he can speak but lately its mostly grunts and things like VAR blah blah blah ...profit and sustainability rules blah blah blah...points deduction blah blah blah ... . Is 'blah blah blah" Dutch?
