After listening to the aylsoccer pod cast I can’t help but fall in love with Ian Joy. It may have well been the Scottish accent or his witty manter, but must likely it was the witty manter in that Scottish acccent. I’m pretty much sold on the guy I can’t help but think that he is a similar mold to Frankie Hejduk. He gets concept of soccer and the passion of fans, he really sound like he will give it his all on the field for RSL. Who would he have to beat out on the USMNT roster to get time as a LB?
It was an absolute pleasure interviewing the guy. Very personable. He's a big ManU supporter so we're going to watch the FA Cup tie if the team is in town.
Just finished listening to the podcast. He's a very entertaining guy, and I can't wait to see him do his thing on the pitch. What would it be like to actually have RSL be feared (at least the right side of the defense, anyway)? Maybe we'll have to start wearing kilts to the games, or form an Ian's Army section or something. And after listening to his description of FC St. Pauli, could there be a more striking contrast than with RSL? Hopefully we can make his adjustment smooth, but this isn't exactly Hamburg...
I hope these good feelings are still intact towards the end of the season. I like Ian too. Not to be a downer, but at one point Jack Stewart was also the RSL-mancrush posterboy. Obviously, it only took a few silly balls let through for that luster to wear off. As well it should. Accent or not.
I concur with everything Phathead said. We've had several dozen players on the show and he's the most personable yet. Most players take off right after the show (or even before then) - Ian hung around for 1/2 hour afterwards. Wanted to know about us and our families, etc., wanted to go grab a beer (I would've but I had things to do) and seemed real genuine about it. I think he'll be really good with fans. I'm excited to see what he can do on the pitch. I get the feeling he's the kind of guy who will go forward, but more than that he takes pride in his defense (a far cry from some of our previous outside backs who seemed to want to play forward). On another note, his official bio says he's 5'8".......there's no way. Check the picture - I'm 5'9". And Chris, I forgot to ask you what's up with that tie? Did you steal it off a dead homeless guy? I'm truly embarassed for you.
“Not to be a downer” I’ve been a closet reader of BIGSoccer since RSL was announced but just joined after moving to Arizona. Bur lets be honest RSL Fortaleza Menina you are the epiphany of a lesser crab! And who in there right mind ever claimed to have a man crush on Jack Stewart?
No, you are obviously more like 6' 1". I'm 5' 8" (a shy under really) and had many memorable discussions with guys who insisted I must be close to six feet, because they were 5' 9" but two inches shorter than me. They'd argue that I must have grown taller as they couldn't be only 5' 6". My daughters, they're going to be the six footers in the clan, at least the younger (the older may top out at 5' 9" or so). Like RSLFM, I, too, remember when we were thrilled to have Jack Stewart even as we lamented the loss of one of Robbie Findley's ex-teammates, Ryan Johnson. And before we anoint Ian Joy to the USNT, let's recall that he isn't even RSL's starting back yet - I heard Kreis say that no one has a spot guaranteed.
Ian actually said that himself. If he's as scrappy as everyone says he is (himself included) that would be something we haven't seen much of from our side backs. Ahhh, jack stewart, the center back with little speed stuck out on the side. That was fun last year.
Is that why you didn't respond to me...? Hell that is probably why I didn't know he wanted to go for a beer!!! In the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson: Mmmmmm Beer!
Great interview AYL guys...I know he has to still prove himself, but interviews like this make it really easy to cheer for him.
some of you may be aware that Keokuk Iowa is across the Mississipi from Nauvoo...about a 20 mintue drive down the river then across from Nauvoo. ok...none of you probably care but I thought I would mention it anyway.
It's a small Illinois town on the Mississippi, best known for the settlement of a small, peculiar group of communal living people in the 1800's - the Icarians! Okay, okay - not what you expected, right?
Actually I was being facetious... You could not have lived in the state of Utah 2-3 years ago and not known what Nauvoo is... it was on the news constantly... There were special news reports and all kinds of stuff!
