If the two parties were more robust and the primary voters were saner and we had two younger, more dynamic candidates with 50% less proto-fascism than the current options we wouldn't have this problem.
In the Tim Miller / Ezra Klein podcast, Tim posed an interesting question: hypothetically, if your life depended on the Democratic nominee to beat the Orange fascist, who would you want as the Democratic nominee? This is exactly how I am approaching this topic because, as a gay man who teaches evolution and has received multiple death threats, I do view this in a life-and-death way. Given how white supremacists view gays, given Nazi Germany went after gays early on, given Christian Nationalism and given Putin's approach, this very well may be a life or death situation to me. As such, people telling me to STFU and back Biden can STFU themselves. Your life may not be in danger, but mine very well could be and I vehemently disagree that Biden is the best option and I do not appreciate people like you telling people like me, whose very lives might be on the line, to STFU. For ********'s sake, start treating this with the seriousness it deserves.
Why do you talk like you are the only one in the line of fire. I don't think you're telling me to shut up and I'm not telling you to shut up. What I'm telling you is this is dubois versus Washington, this is two people want the best but I have two very different views on which is the way forward.
Keeping Biden on the ticket is going to bite us in the ass. He' aged incredibly - he reminds me of my 82 year old uncle who has Parkinson's although my uncle speaks better while walking a little worse. As the election draws nearer voters will see more and more of him. And if the campaign tries to hide him, voters in battleground states will still see him featured in negative ads any time they use any media. This is from Biden’s speech to the NAACP yesterday. He loses track of what he’s saying constantly. Asking people to ignore what’s right in front of them is absurd. pic.twitter.com/b2IVsFStIe— AG (@AGHamilton29) July 17, 2024
I took "Dems need to STFU" to refer to the party leadership and all their waffling on the issue, not every single person who votes Democratic. I'm a public librarian. In the past few months I've been accused of being a pedophile groomer on social media. Just today on the library's Facebook page an aggrieved citizen posted that my decision to accept a donation of Urdu-language books from a Pakistani-American advocacy group is "White genocide."
Biden has ZERO chance of winning. Four years ago he was leading by 16% in the Quinnipiac national poll. Compare that to today. What's the actual plan to win? Telling people to STFU? What then?
How many things are you counting on going 100% right for this victory that you think will happen with another candidate and just think about that and think about the things that have to go right for Biden to win.
Do you think Biden will be physically and mentally able to be effective as President four years from today? If not, then he should not be the candidate because he has ZERO chance of winning.
And if you get accused of being a pedophile groomer because you are a librarian, imagine what it is like for people like me. I very purposely refuse to be in the presence of a child in America without other adults around - and even then I will avoid interacting with the child.
You're not answering my question but you want me to keep answering yours. You want to talk like you're not taking an absolute moonshot counting on five six different things going absolutely right for this supposed victory when you look at the current situation and you're like well we really only need one or two things to go right and we've got a victory. That is a part of this that you want to keep ignoring you're like Biden's old. So walk me through this grand plan to change him and how it's going to work. So I'll yield to your he has zero chance of winning and we have to do something drastic now walk me through this plan so I can walk you through every pitfall of it.
Quick update--the "White genocide" crowd on our library's FB page are now demanding a list of the Urdu-language books currently sitting in & outside my office waiting while I use the ISBNs (when they have one) to try and look up bibliographic information. Another "is it fascism yet?" data point for the discussion.
I came in at the end of a discussion last night on a late night politics show over here and they were saying something about the fact that, until 1968, (I think it was), the primaries did choose the candidate or, at least, it was less of a 'coronation' than it's become over the years, presumably to show unity. I think the point atm is that the idea of 'showing unity' has rather gone by the board because Biden couldn't do well in the debate and at one point he even got involved in a slanging match about golf, of all things... Quite honestly that looks embarrassing and most people outside can understand a lot of people, (particularly younger people), looking at those two and saying they'll vote for 'None of the above'. All I'm saying is that there is NO 'risk-free' option available so you're quite right that changing to someone else is a risk but so is sticking with the guy that's there atm.
I have seen no evidence that it would actually be a problem. All the polls show that other candidates have a better chance against the Orange fascist than Biden does. I have seen no evidence that people would not vote for the replacement because their feelings got hurt. Instead, the focus group podcast jitty mentioned does show that black women would be totally ok with a white heterosexual male being chosen over Harris. So far, you have provided zero evidence that replacing Biden would be a problem. All you've provided are hypotheticals without any substance. What actual evidence do you have that replacing Biden would be worse than keeping him? I've seen no actual evidence that actually supports that.
Of course, @The Jitty Slitter predicted all this before. I mean, sure, it was in 2009 but still, that just shows how prophetic he is... AMIRITE?
Which was also totally predictable. (I say that because I predicted it 9 months before the election, given who I presumed the candidates would be). And I'm even more sure about Biden losing than I was about Clinton losing. This time it is a total slam dunk.
How do you get the message out when all the talk will be about Palace intrigue. You don't expect pro Biden Democrats to leak to the press like the current Biden must go guys are leaking? The press has already decided Dems in disarray is the narrative, how do you change it? What happens at the first stumble by the new candidate? What are the talking points you will give to community activitists, door knockers and callers to people in swing states that question this decision? Your science background has you see things as purely data driven. Maybe it is my business background but understanding and being prepared for things you can't quantify is crucial and you polls aren't taken into account the press and in-fighting plus the short runway to get a cohesive message across.
I don't think it's a total slam dunk. Trump has had the best week of his life and he still only wins three out of four times in most models. Of course, if the Dems want better than 25% odds, they need to do something. Making the switch to Kamala during the RNC would have been a masterstroke but, alas, Dems prefer a different kind of stroke it seems.
Same here. Reminds me of my father, especially the way he walks and always has that 'did I close the garage door?' expression on his face. Biden is about 2 years behind my Dad in the decline phase and trust me he can't do another 4 years at a difficult job. Since most people can relate like this, all the excuses and BS-ing is not gonna fly.
Watch that Tim Miller / Ezra Klein podcast. Ezra makes the point that if you have a "speed primary", or whatever he called it, with town halls, etc., the networks would be covering it, giving the candidates air time while they go after the orange fascist, with the orange fascist not otherwise being in the limelight as he desires. I have already provided the framework of a "speech" explaining why Biden removed himself and how the orange fascist is older than Biden when Biden was first elected. It can totally be done in a way that puts attention back on the fascist. And you know what else? I think Harris would be fantastic going after the orange fascist - after all, as a DA she has a lot of experience dealing with felons and arguing the case against them.
I understood your point, but took it another direction anyway. Apologies for not being clearer on that.
