On the one hand we are told people don't pay attention to the election until September or so (thus we shouldn't trust the polls), but on the other hand we're told people are already so invested that Biden stepping down means "they" (not talking about you) will not vote for who the party nominates at the convention. So they're not paying attention but are already locked in.
Yeah - this is defo a straw man which PSA has been pointing out. the kind of trump/biden swing voters who will decide this election probably don't watch CNN and listen to the Bulwark podcast. We should not be afraid to have disagreements inside the tent, so long as they get resolved and everyone moves on.
I dd, and quite carefully, because my pessimistic SO was panicking right beside me. I saw an old man with a minor speech impediment and a cold, who was somewhat gobsmacked by an opponent who told outrageous lies one right after another so closely that it was impossible to point one out before the next rolled out on top of and covering it. The Republicans had spent a couple of years pushing the "Joe is senile" meme, and people on Joe's own side who were disappointed immediately ran it up the flagpole and saluted it obediently and did the enemy's bidding. It is as though half of all Democrats will be horribly disappointed if Joe wins...
The Mooch is on board lads The billionaire boys are all in for Trump. I get it. I was there in 2016 and did the cursory analysis that lower taxes, and pro business regulation was going to be good for business and America. But that analysis was superficial. The real problem is what they want to do to the…— Anthony Scaramucci (@Scaramucci) July 16, 2024
And yet, at the post-debate rally the effects of the cold magically disappeared. It was Biden's job to deal with the lies we all knew were coming. He was the last person who should have been gobsmacked.
With all due respect, you are misreading this horribly. That wasn't a cold, nor a stutter. I don't think anybody takes even the slightest hint of joy in saying that the dude at the debate was a guy who seemed utterly incapable of running a campaign to defeat ascendent fascism. Frankly he seemed utterly incapable of balancing a checkbook. Nobody is carrying the enemy's water; on the contrary, we're all trying to figure out how to scrape victory against the enemy. The current approach is not working.
Be that as it may, I did not feel his performance or his appearance justified your claims about him. And I believe there is a sort of perverse, self-destructive undercurrent in the opposition to Trumpism that actually wants Trump to win-- so they can say "See, I told you so!" I think there is also a psychology induced by video games, but not of violence necessarily-- I think the problem is, people get used to the idea that you can lose and just start over. That consequences are not real.
this is the whole thing, who gives us the best chance in November? IF Biden could beat Trump again, we'd all be ecstatic. that's a big if though and I'm glad the election isn't tomorrow. And, at this point it's hard to see who gives us a better chance than Biden.
I don't play video games and I absolutely do not want the Orange fascist to win. I will happily say I am wrong, as I have done many times in the past, if I am wrong. I don't have a problem with that. I'm a gay male. If you think I want the orange fascist to win so that I can say "I told you so", you are ... I won't even type what I am thinking given how offensive it is. edit: Now I realize you were speaking generally, whereas I was speaking specifically. But it seems most people who are going after those of us who want Biden replaced talk about an unnamed "other" who are making claims that we don't make here. Focus on our arguments, not those straw-men.
In an off-the-cuff remark a number of weeks or months ago, Biden mentioned there were 50 Democrats who could be the orange fascist. Obviously he was exaggerating, but we should not fall into the trap that Obi Wan Biden is our only hope. His light saber skills aren't what they used to be.
But if you look at polls, for whatever they are worth, you do see other possible candidates out-performing Biden.
Polls seem like they're all over the place right now. If someone emerges as a stronger candidate, hallelujah. But then Joe's saying hell no, he ain't gonna go...so how do we get around that?
I also don't see a way of replacing Biden without making the entire Democratic party look incredibly weak. Biden steps down, Republicans pounce and it becomes yet another story that is covered non stop by the Republican-friendly media. Never mind that Republicans are pushing for a nationwide abortion ban, the only story is going to be "Democrats in disarray". The best option may be if Biden dies, Harris becomes President and becomes the nominee by default. That's probably the best option if Biden needs to be replaced. I would prefer to stick with Biden because I don't think any other candidate does better once you add in the "Democrats in disarray" story which any replacement hands to the media.
That's just it. He needs to withdraw his candidacy on his accord, which he won't. If he doesn't, we will lose. Once he is officially nominated I will support him. But he needs to withdraw if we want to have a chance.
yep, its a helluva position for Democrats to be in, keep ridin' with Biden, potentially over a cliff or plunge ourselves headfirst into the abyss.
"We respect and appreciate the President's decision that it will be best for someone younger to fight to preserve our democracy, our freedom and our livelihood. The President has brought the country out of a pandemic that was made worse by his predecessor, tamed the crippling inflation better than any other developed country, created unprecedented job growth, regained the trust of our allies and partners, and has been one of the most successful presidents in recent history. However, he understands that, like the President but unlike the Republican nominee, Father Time does not take a vacation. He recognizes the complicating factors that being 80 has brought into his presidency and would also bring into the office with the Republican nominee, who is older than the President was at the start of his term. President Biden recognizes that he is not as youthful, sharp or energetic at his current age - which is younger than Trump would be in four years time. As such, President Biden is delighted to throw his unwavering support to his Vice President, who has been ready to step into the office in a moment's notice for the last four years should an unfortunate emergency arise, which thankfully did not happen." Obviously I'm not a political speech writer, but you get the gist of how it could be turned against Trump very easily.
I'm curious how those that think RGB should have stepped down to ensure a Democratic-party chosen replacement are going to feel when Joe loses the election.
If talking about court reform is a third rail…why bother with this clearly unconstitutional shit like term limits? Just say if Congress passes legislation to expand the court…I will sign it. If you want the court expanded…get me a Congress that will vote to do it. BREAKING WAPO:President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks — including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.…— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) July 16, 2024 Because this looks like lip service for the rubes that won’t know better.
Using Biden’s response to Trump’s garbled doublespeak is a weak sauce response. Yeah maybe it’s a little cheap on Biden’s part, but given the note they put in that article it’s obvious people don’t really know what Trump meant by that statement, and I would include Trump himself in that. He was just being his mealy-mouthed self and trying to please his hardline supporters while also trying not to incriminate himself too badly with the normies.
Presidency for those in government is pretty much end of the line. And there's a succession plan for a reason. RBG's problem was she didn't make the decision to step down when it was optimal. Instead, she doesn't, ends up passing when the GOP has the Senate and they take advantage. I had complaints about the likes of Feinstein being in office too long too. I think it's worst when someone like that holds onto a Congressional seat instead of letting someone younger take the mantle. Presidency? Different story.
Sure he does, “I’m the greatest, the left are terrible people, MAGA.” That’s all he needs to say to the kind of people who would vote for something like him.
From the little I've watched, it just sounded like he had a bad cold. Once that came out, I thought it made sense. Seeing the clip of him at Waffle House, then in subsequent appearances. He's fine. Too many people are expecting him to be Simone Biles. Something that Fox News goes through, and I think a lot of people with the opposition to Trump is that it's easier to be in opposition than in control. It's hard to criticize when you're the one making the decisions. The games of old, say 1990s were pretty unforgiving in a way. You got second chances but after that it was game over and you had to start over. The games of now? I can see it. Many years playing Sonic the Hedgehog will teach you that.
