It's the high value that people put on religion as being the guide to make their political decisions.
I agree that we have disrespected him. However, it is best for everyone, himself and family included, that he retire now. He’s all there in the head still, but his body is slowing down dramatically from 4 years ago, and his mind will too. I hope that, if Kamala wins, that they continue to reach out to him for insight and direction as long as he wishes to be involved. Amazing man, and is exactly what we needed these last 4 years.
I wish we lived in the world where voters realised even old '24 Joe is better than Trump but we don't live in that world. What is going to be interesting is when the properly researched stories on the debate fiasco finally emerge - I imagine next year. What we do know, is that his campaign stewards were elite tier people and never would have made an early debate central to their strategy if they had thought he would blow up on the launch pad. One explanation is he suffered some kind of significant decline recently. It is quite interesting that if you take his softball interviews and just look at the transcripts to remove issues around his diction - they are very muddled So I agree it's best for everyone he has stepped back.
“The CEO of Bank of America, Brian Moynihan, said that the financial giant no longer believes a recession is on the horizon for the American economy, hinting that the Biden administration and Federal Reserve have achieved a ‘soft landing’ after inflation troubles in recent years,” The Hill reports.
Meh. We'll see how the economy responds to the interest rate cut. But the data does suggest that, if anything, we will have a soft landing.
I get what you're saying but I think, in general, it's not really for voters to feel sorry for politicians in today's world, particularly in the west, even if they've been treated unfairly, as has arguably happened in this case. I think we need to be careful not to repeat a a version of the mistake made by RGB where most people said they thought she'd made the decision not to retire for herself. If Biden had stayed in the race after that disastrous debate, IMO, he'd have been doing the wrong thing and the people that paid the price would have been the American people and, indeed, people across the world. He deserves our thanks and respect for doing the right thing but I don't think it's disrespecting the guy to say if he hadn't, and who you know who had won, we'd be probably be using his name as a punchline in a political point in the future.
Doesn't the secretary of State certify elections in PA? I am not sure the PA Senate can block it, counties could potentially do it, if they refuse to certify by December 11th.
Let's not forget his stance on Gaza was hurting him too. Kamala has a chance to win them back. She stumbled first out the gate but her response the other day was much better.
The problem for him was all the crap he'd said in the past was an albatross around his neck. Hopefully she'll be able to distance herself from Netanyahu in a way that leaves some wriggle room. It seems pretty obvious to me that that guy would be quite comfortable with donny tiny hands in charge of the states.
I guess Joe did it again... New York Times: “Overall inflation was 2.9 percent in July on a yearly basis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, easing slightly from 3 percent in June and a bit milder than economists had expected.” “While inflation still exceeds the 2 percent that was normal before the coronavirus pandemic, it is much slower than the 9.1 percent peak in 2022.”
Everybody knows that-- but it is almost as important to not be too early as it is not to be too late.
In fairness, I do think it's reasonable to believe Biden is simply too old for four more years of the Presidency.
I don't care for this talking point, because on the one hand it assumes that 'moderate democrats' have an explicit preference for, say, being against Universal health care, rather than their 'moderation' being in relation to existing political realities; and on the other, it ignores the context within which American politicians operate. Comparing the Democrats to mainstream western European center-left parties without taking American political realities--including the existence of the Republican party--into account is myopic. The better analogy would be to contrast the GOP to traditional mainstream western European center-right parties*--that's where shit REALLY goes off the rails. *Yes, I'm aware that in many western European countries, the traditional party alignments have been recently upended.
IIRC @American Brummie has debunked the idea that moderate dems would be conservatives in other countries
Also, as explicitly stated by me on several occasions and demonstrated by political scientists, Democrats are safely in the range of typical center-left parties worldwide. I am not too tired of refuting and debunking this to do it again. But I am too tired to re-link all the evidence. Anyone who disagrees will just have to read my previous posts. I've got to go change another dirty diaper.
There are a lot of things about about a lot of different stages of my now-adult son's life I miss, but that ain't one of them.
