Thread is here: The story of Jorge Vilda and the15 players who left — A thread: pic.twitter.com/aXCj6MRlHf— Michael (@MichaelEmilio_) August 16, 2023
Over the last few weeks/months (and even years) there have been a lot of issues showing up regarding various kinds of harassment and abuse in women's football. Most notably, in this cup, there have been the issues the Zambian players have experienced, Vilda, and just yesterday (on the WC trophy stage), Spanish football federation President Rubiales kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66568226 There have been issues in other places as well, such as France and the US (and I'm sure other places I have forgotten or lumped in with the men's child abuse issues), but they keep showing up. I have been resisting a thread for a long time, but in light of WC23, I think it is time to have this thread. Mod Note: Please keep the discussion civil. Attacks on posters, threats of harm to anybody (other posters, or people in real life) will not be treated kindly, whether one thinks that person deserves it or not.
Good thread. Very easy to forget about WC squads who will fall prey to their own federations. Case in point: CAN WNT were offered to resign their 2023 WC player prizes to the CAN fed. CAN fed alleges that it will go broke by Sep 2023, and it needs funds to pay for their MNT friendlies. In exchange, CAN fed will not shut down future WNT training camps. All of that for a national federation expected to have large revenue in 2026, as WC co-host. Did CAN fed ever hear of Concacaf loans?

We call on the RFEF to implement the necessary protocols, ensure the rights of our players and adopt exemplary measures. It is essential that the national team is represented by figures that project its values of equality and respect. We call on the Consejo Superior de Deportes to support and actively promote, within its competencies, the prevention of and intervention against sexual harassment or abuse, machismo and sexism. The union is working to ensure that acts such as those we have seen never go unpunished, that they are sanctioned and that appropriate measures are adopted to protect female footballers from unacceptable actions.
President of the Spanish FA - Luis Rubiales will most likely be removed from office (or he will resign) in comming days/weeks. Spanish Tribunal Administrativo del Deporte already had a hand in removing previous RFEF president - Angel Maria Villar. If this case would go there (very likely) it will happen again. FIFA's also launching disciplinary action toward Rubiales. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee opens disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish FA⬇️ https://t.co/vtGu2Ez8EP— FIFA Media (@fifamedia) August 24, 2023 Spain WNT coach Jorge Vilda will most likely loose the support he had from the RFEF.
Rubiales refuses to resign (and gets applause): 🗣 "¡No voy a dimitir!" ("I will not resign!) 😡Extraordinary, upsetting scene in 🇪🇸 as Luis Rubiales refuses to step down as RFEF president. Claims to be victim of "social assassination", calls kiss condemned around the world "mutual" in crazy speech.pic.twitter.com/vYawAkQKC3— Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) August 25, 2023
But, it looks Rubiales might be suspended: 🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨Víctor Franco confirms that the CSD is going to suspend Luis Rubiales from his position. The CSD will also file the complaint with the Tribunal Administration of Sport pic.twitter.com/EI1EvURlma— ata football (@atafball) August 25, 2023 Can someone help me on the Spanish hierarchy in sport here? Does the CSD have the power to remove Rubiales from RFEF?
CSD can suspend him - which they did, and will move the case to TAD (Administrative Court of Sport) that have the power to remove Rubiales from RFEF and forbid him from taking any job in Spanish sport for period from 2 to 16 years.
The Spanish Team will not play until Rubiales resigns. BREAKING: The Spain women's football squad say in a joint statement they will not play any matches until Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales has resigned 🇪🇸 pic.twitter.com/Yp7jKdqf6I— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) August 25, 2023
Well, Infantino told the women to "pick the right battles" and that they "have the power to convince us men what we have to do and what we don't have to do. You do it." (Is this the place to discuss that comment?) Well, they're doing it.
I'd like to see the Spanish men's team make a statement of support... Oh, and in the replies...it just keeps getting...worse. He looks like Jonny sins 😭 pic.twitter.com/gZokMwejgP— JEY🥇 (@MmoaNkoaaa) August 25, 2023 (verified the second picture is from the same place)
https://sports.yahoo.com/spain-stri...uis-rubiales-refused-to-resign-141852770.html Iglesias and Bellerin said they won't play for the Men's side until Rubiales is gone.
It's nice to see, but Iglesias only has a few caps, I think, and was left off the 2022 WC squad, and I think Bellerin was already retired from national duty (?). It'd be nice to see a player with more "leverage" make a similar statement.
Unfortunately, seeing the statements by Arteta and Luis Enrique, I don't know how much support the men's side will give. Hope they surprise me though.
If Luis Rubiales wants to go to war with Spanish Prime Minister, Spanish politicians (from different parties - rarely as united in one voice like now), Spainish Courts and Spanish Fans... not to mention international public opinion... Well then... (Any more speeches like the one he gave today at the RFEF assembly will sink him deeper and deeper.)
I took Arteta's comment, in full, to be better and more cautious than Luis Enrique's. Of course, Arteta was also asked in the context of the women's success.
I hope this has also opened the eyes to many more people, what many female players around the world have to endure. Especially from Federations who are not watched. And I do wonder how the investigations about the Zambia coach will turn out? https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...e-mwape-rubbed-players-chest-womens-world-cup
Is it appropriate to bring up Arteta’s consistent, full support of one of his players that has not gone down well with a lot of fans for good reason?
On that note, while I wholeheartedly support the Spain's WNT, it is not lost on me that they have more power and voice right now because they won. More power to them for using it, and hopefully they use it to oust Vilda and the rest as well. But, the Zambian WNT doesn't have that same power. Women should not have to win to have our voices heard.— Christen Press (@ChristenPress) August 25, 2023
