The inevitable war with Greenland

Discussion in 'Politics & Current Events' started by babaorum, Jan 7, 2026.

  1. I think the military brass isnot going to jump up for joy with the order to send the marines. This isnot a fight against some countries that have limited military capabilities like Venezuela.

Consider his argument that the US needs Greenland because of his Golden Dome defense shield fantasy. He's never explained how that would actually work or why Greenland is an integral part of it.
Then ask yourself how Canada wouldn't also be an integral part of it needed by the US if the US owned Alaska and, Odin-forbid, Greenland as well?

ICE agents are often compared to the Gestapo. They should rather be compared to members of the SA in the early days of Nazism: a group of thugs, carrying out extrajudicial actions, composed of the dregs of American society in the 2020s, just as the SA was composed of the dregs of German society in the 1920s.

I agree it’s a better comparison. A huge difference being that SA numbered 2-4 million in a country with a population somewhat over 60 million during that period. ICE thugs number in the thousands, in a country of well over 300 million. They can break shit, murder, cause great havoc. But not to the degree the Brownshirts did.

Bernie Sanders:" Trump is raising tariffs on 8 NATO allies because they rightly support Denmark's sovereignty in Greenland. Destroying our closest alliances to take Greenland — which Denmark lets us use freely already — is insane. Congress must say NO."

We're awaiting a SCOTUS ruling that might affect this situation - and Congress' role regarding it - rather directly. But we'll see when the ruling actually comes down.

By the way, has the wording shifted here? Trump always said he's raising tarrifs "on" or imposing tarrfis "on" foreign countries. But there seems to be very little effort (and I may be missing it) to - for the hundredth time - correct the lie that he's somehow charging foreign countries in some way. He's claiming he'll add a X% tarrif to goods imported from those countries. Tarrfis not paid by those countries but by US importers and, to an expent, US consumers. Not only does this feel as though we've finally stumbled into "the boy (in this case, 80 year old toddler) who cried 'wolf!'" territory when to comes to tarrif threats, but in essence he's telling the world that if he can't have smoehtnig he wants, he'll shoot the US consumer in the head.

    Um, ok.

Meanwhile, longtime trading partners are starting to sign deals with China. What a ********ing imbecile.

I know you know better, but the Golden Dome is an insanely stupid idea for all the same reasons Star Wars was incredibly stupid in the 1980s.

Reagan was anti intellectual too. That’s why he and Trump are/were so scientifically illiterate. They favor ideology over knowledge.

As implied by my use of "fantasy" and the following sentence which you didn't include in the quote.

My point is, if he is using the Golden Dome as justification for Greenland (even though he has never explained how or why), then why wouldn't he then pivot to Canada as well using the same "justification"?

Can I ask where are all the 2nd ammendment types that go on about that guns are needed to defeat government tyranny?

Why have they been so quiet recently and why are they not rising up?

    Mod edit: we're on it.

    now back to my post

Sounders, I know, I was just tying Trump to Reagan, who is by far the dominant Republican between the civil rights era and Trump.

One of the incredibly difficult questions for international leaders and American leaders to grapple with is, what will a post Trump Republican Party look like? Is Trump cause or symptom? I’m pointing out a piece of evidence that Trump is a symptom.

They’re also the ones wearing the masks and shooting people now. For them, a government is tyrannical if they didn’t vote for it. They voted for this.

They don't want guns to fight against tyranny. They want guns to put "leftist lunatics" down in case they revolt against the tyrant that the gun nuts prefer.

This is nothing new, really. Pre-civil war, southern lawmakers may have said big words about "government tyranny", but what they really intended to use the 2nd amendment for was to put down slave revolts.

When the South revolted against the "tyrannical" federal government, it was the governments of the states who took the initiative of the rebellion and, in this case, the 2nd amendment made no difference because the state governments had the arsenals of the states at their disposal. They would have been able to create an army to fight against the central government with or without the 2nd amendment. It wasn't local guerillas fighting against the government - therefore the civil war looked exactly like an entirely conventional state-vs-state instead of the peninsular war against Napoleon.

I think Chappelle had a very old bit about the quickest way to real gun control being every African-American trying to legally purchase a firearm.
Anyway, crux of that bit is obviously the hypocrisy of the second amendment purists, who in reality often times do not want certain demographics to be gun owners.

So the people you are referring to are pro-ICE, might be ICE agents themselves, or have been beating themselves off furiously these last few months to the imagery of ICE assaulting minorities.
