Yeah, FH desperately needs a forward with pace. They have Birta Georgsdóttir who is a promising young player but the team needs more firepower. If this video is anything to go by, it's going to be fun watching her play this summer. Sadly though, based on the first two games I've seen, FH is looking more and more like a team that is going to face relegation at the end of the season.

First the big shocker. Earlier today it was revealed that one of the players of Breiðablik, Andrea Hauksdóttir, has contracted the coronavirus. She came to Iceland from the US, where she is studying, on the 17th of june. On arrival Hauksdóttir was tested for the COVID virus and the test proved negative. A week later, she was tested again and this time the test was positive. The news came as a shock as Breiðablik had already played against KR were Hauksdóttir came on as a substitute (there are now only 9 people who have the virus currently in Iceland that we know of). This means that both teams have to quarantine themselves for the next two weeks. This could jeopardize the whole tournament. If the Icelandic football federation postpones the fourth and fifth round, it could mean that the season will finish in November when it is next to impossible to play football in Iceland due to cold temperatures and bad weather. Lets hope it will not come to that. But now for the third round results.

    Breiðablik - KR 6 - 0
    1-0 Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir (14)
    2-0 Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir (18)
    3-0 Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir (31)
    4-0 Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir (53)
    5-0 Agla María Albertsdóttir (74)
    6-0 Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir (90)

A rout. KR never stood a chance against the free flowing play of the Breiðablik team. Berglind was on fire and score a hat trick were each goal was more beautiful than the last. Rakel Hönnudóttir played her first game after returning back from Reading and showed her quality. Agla María earned a penalty in the 74th minute from which she scored herself. Then the 19 year old Sveindís Jane scored a brace to make the score 6-0.

Player of the match: Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir

    FH - Selfoss 0 - 2
    0-1 Own goal (10)
    0-2 Tiffany McCarty (53)

Finally a win for Selfoss. Not a very convincing one but Selfoss did what was needed. The first goal was own goal by Sigríður Lára Garðarsdóttir (20 caps) as she tried to head the ball out of bounds only to see in the net. The second goal came when Tiffany McCarty found herself through on goal a placed it easily past the keeper.

Player of the match: Dagný Brynjarsdóttir

    Fylkir - Þróttur 2-2
    1-0 Bryndís Arna Níelsdóttir (8)
    1-1 Stephanie Ribeiro (48)
    2-1 Bryndís Arna Níelsdóttir (90)
    2-2 Mary Vignola (93)

An entertaining game between evenly matched teams. First goal was scored by the 17 year old Bryndís Arna Níelsdóttir when she came from behind the defense and slotted the ball past the keeper. Ribeiro made in 1-1 in the second half with a header assisted by Linda Líf Boama. Bryndis gave the lead back to Fylkir with a shot form 20 meters that hit the inside of the bar and into the goal. The equalizer was also a great one when Mary Vignola connected sweetly with the ball from outside the penalty box, no goalkeeper was going to save that shot.

Player of the match: Mary Vignola

    ÍBV - Stjarnan 0 - 1
    0-1 María Sól Jakobsdóttir (86)

A dead boring game. The less said about this match the better. Only two chances in the whole game from which Stjarnan scored their only goal.

Player of the match: The puffins of Vestmannaeyjar. Lovely creatures

    Valur - Þór/KA 6 - 0
    1-0 Hlín Eiríksdóttir (11)
    2-0 Hlín Eiríksdóttir (31)
    3-0 Elín Metta Jensen (51)
    4-0 Hlín Eiríksdóttir (55)
    5-0 Elín Metta Jensen (72)
    6-0 Dóra María Lárusdóttir (92)

Elín Metta Jensen and Hlín Eiríksdóttir were virtually unstoppable in the match. Hlín with her fast runs up and down the right flank and also cutting inside using her strength and determination scored the third hat trick of her career. With Jensen, the ball never seemed to leave her feet. Often with three or four players around her Jensen somehow always managed to find her way past them creating chances for herself or her teammates. The last goal was a thing of beauty, Dóra María Lárusdóttir (114 caps and 18 goals for Iceland) from long range like only Dóra María can do.

Player of the match: Hlín Eiríksdóttir

Only two matches played in this round, the rest of matches have been postponed due to covid19 infections. Breiðablik, KR and Fylkir have all had to quarantine their players for two weeks. One match was played yesterday and the other will be played today.

    ÍBV - Valur 1 - 3
    0-1 Elín Metta Jensen (4)
    0-2 Elín Metta Jensen (48)
    1-2 Grace Hancock (56)
    1-3 Bergdís Fanney Einarsdóttir (65)

It is always difficult to play in Vestmannaeyjar said Pétur Pétursson, the Valur coach and former Feyenoord striker post match. Valur started well when Elín Jensen ditched her defender and put a beautiful strike past the keeper. After that ÍBV put some pressure on the champions and had some decent chances that they were not able to convert. The second half started the same way as the first half, with a goal from Jensen who again was able to shake off her defender. ÍBV made it 2-1 after Grace Hancock headed in a free kick taken by Olga Sevcova. But Jensen wasn't done and in the 65th minute she provided Bergdís Einarsdóttir with an assist that Einarsdóttir finished easily past the kepper.

Player of the match: Elín Metta Jensen, two goals and one assist. Jensen is proving again and again why she was voted the best player of the league last year and has now 7 goals in the first 4 matches. In the link below is a recent interview with the player published on the website of 66° North where she discusses for example the death of her father and medical school.

How much longer are Valur going to be able to keep her? Has there been any transfer rumours abroad about her? May be she is putting medical school before a football career abroad.

She has finished two years in medical school and currently is focused on her education but has not ruled out playing professionally abroad (she has stated that she is still interested). She is happy playing for Valur and I don't think the other nordic leagues interest her much but I could be wrong. There were rumours in January that AC Milan wanted to sign her but she refused. AC Milan than opted to sign Berglind Þorvaldsdóttir instead. My sources in Iceland though say that they are just that, rumours. Hopefully for the Icelandic national team she will leave Iceland soon and play in a stronger league. Until then, hopefully Valur will do well in the Champions League.

    Stjarnan - Selfoss 1 - 3
    0-1 Dagný Brynjarsdóttir (17)
    0-2 Magdalena Anna Reimus (25)
    0-3 Dagný Brynjarsdóttir (28)
    0-4 Magdalena Anna Reimus (64)
    1-4 Snædís María Jörundsdóttir (88)

Finally the floodgates open for Selfoss and Dagný Brynjarsdóttir scores her first goals since returning back to Iceland. After a slow start Selfoss was awarded a penalty when the ball struck the arm of one of the Stjarnan players. Up stepped Dagný to score her first goal of the season. Some poor defending lead to the second goal, scored by Magdelana Anna Reimus after an assist by Tiffany McCarty. Only three minutes later McCarty had another assist when Dagný Brynjarsdóttir headed the ball into the net. Tiffany had her third assist in the second half when she sent Magdalena through on goal for an easy finish. Stjarnan scored a consolation goal in the 88th minute scored by the 16 year old Snædís María Jörundsdóttir, her first goal in the Úrvalsdeild.

Player of the match: Tiffany McCarty, involved in all the goals scored by Selfoss, always threatening and creating chances for her teammates.

The biggest transfer of any Icelandic player in the history of women's soccer. Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, the team captain of Iceland, has just signed with Olympique Lyonnais. Sara started her career with Haukar before moving to Breiðablik. Sara played her first international match aged only 17 and two years later she moved to Sweden to play for Rosengard. After winning four titles and one cup final for the Malmö team, Sara decided she needed a new challenge. Therefore she jumped at the opportunity when Wolfsburg came calling in 2016. Four years later, she has won four Bundesliga titles with Wolfsburg and three cup final titles. In 2018 Sara Björk was named the Sportsperson of the year by Icelandic sports journalists. Now a new chapter in her already impressive career has been opened and knowing Gunnarsdóttir, she is going to add a lot a toughness to her new team.

Yesterday KSÍ revealed the new Icelandic kit by Puma and a new crest for the Icelandic national team. Featured in the picture are Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir, not sure who the blonde guy is (maybe Daníel Hafsteinsson), Elín Metta Jensen and Kári Árnason. See more in the link below.

These are indeed great news. I wonder about the competition she will face for a starting place in a club like OL. Unless the reason why OL finalized this batch of signings is because they know that Bouhaddi's and Maroszan's departures, that were stopped by the Covid-19 situation, will anyway happen later along the line.

The video has caused some controversy in Iceland. Many feel that it is too nationalistic and I kind of agree with that. It would have been wise to tone it down a little bit. Its football after all, not some fearsome foreigners trying to invade our land. But the crest refers to the four protective spirits of Iceland of which you can read about in the Icelandic sagas that date to the 13th century.

Yeah first part of the vid sounded a bit "heavy" for sports but as a whole is a very nicely done promo. As for the crest it's good to know that these are the protetctive spirits of Iceland. Many years ago I did read Poetic Edda along with Kalevala, both are my only source on the northern myths topic but it's too much widespread a source.

I'm curious, northern Europe myths and legends aren't a part of school curriculum in Poland. What I mean, the topic is mentioned in history class but only briefly on a lesson or two and always as a part of broader pagan mythology. Same goes for our own Slavic myths! (by design of Catholic Church and it's influence) Insted in history and literature classes Polish childeren are taught extensively Greek Mythology.
My question is how does it look in other non-Scandinavian countries? Netherlands, Germany, Belgium for example, are northern myths present in school classes?

 Any people self-reflective enough to be able to feel something is "too nationalistic" is actually great credit to it.

I guess the question is who the video targets. For foreigners like me the video is nice(ly exotic in a way) to watch.

Nope. Germanic and Nordic myths were far behind Greek and Roman myths in my German schools. Most I know about the former was more through games and books than schools to be honest.

I teach in high school in Italy and I have to admit that, even if I introduce some elements of Scandinavian mythology from time to time, it's most about Greek and Roman mythology; on the other hand, I teach Italian and Latin literature, how could I not base my work on classical mythology? It's not like Italian literature has so many references to Nordic myths (I mean: there are some, but it just can't be compared to the classical influence).

    5th round results

    Valur - Stjarnan 3 - 0
    1-0 Hlín Eiríksdóttir (5)
    2-0 Ída Marín Hermannsdóttir (16)
    3-0 Ásdís Karen Halldórsdóttir (60)

A comfortable win for the champions. As in other matches this season Valur started aggressively scoring after only 5 minutes when Hlín Eiríksdóttir received the ball inside the penalty box and put it past the keeper. Ída Marín made it 2-0 on the 16th minute, her first goal for Valur since her arrival this spring. Her father, the football legend Hermann Hreiðarsson, smiled approvingly in the stands. Elín Jensen nearly made it 3-0 before halftime when she danced around five of the Stjarnan players only to see the ball hit the underside of the bar and bounce of the line, unlucky. The second half was quiet compared to the first half. Neither teams created much but Valur did though manage to add one more goal scored by Ásdís Karen Halldórsdóttir, her first of the season.

Player of the match: Ásgerður Baldursdóttir (33), the Makalele of Valur. Meeting her in the middle of the pitch is like hitting a brick wall. The most vocal player in the team, she has become the fearless leader that Valur needed.

    FH - Þróttur 1 - 2
    0-1 Stephanie Ribeiro (1)
    1-1 Hrafnhildur Hauksdóttir (37)
    1-2 Stephanie Ribeiro (45+1)

A crucial game between the new arrivals. After only 37 seconds Ribeiro attacks the defense plays inside the penalty box and slots the ball into the left corner. Fantastic start for the visitors. FH tried to get itself into the the match but gained little ground. That is until the 37th minuted when they earned a corned. Up stepped Hrafnhildur Hauksdóttir who swerved the ball past everyone including the kepper and into the net. Then on the 44th minute things got a little crazy. Birta Georgsdóttir (FH) was through on goal and seemed to be fouled by the goalkepper but the ref waived play on. The FH coach, Guðni Eiríksson, completely lost his head and walked onto the pitch earning a yellow but wouldn't let it go so the ref saw no other way but to give him another yellow and a red. Only a minute later, to add insult to injury, Ribeiro made it 1-2 for the visitors with the last touch of half. A header after a beautiful pass from the 17 year old Andrea Rut Bjarnadóttir. Þróttur completely owned the second half and their win was never in danger. Nic Chamberlain and his players are off to a decent start.

Player of the match: Stephanie Ribeiro (26). You got to hand it to Nic Chamberlain, he has made some terrific signings this year, Ribeiro being one of them. Five goals if four games, a physical player with good technique, he could not have asked for more with the budget that he has to deal with.
