The Tunguska incident during tsarist times was fairly similar.

I love that so many Russians have dashboard mounted cameras. I've read that it's for car protection as purposefull rear ending or backing into cars for shakedowns is rampant.

If only the Russians had more guns! Then they could have shot down that meteor before it did any harm. Thank Jebus for the Second Amendment!

They're similar in that they both involve things falling from the sky and damaging things on the ground, but the scale is vastly different. Tunguska was HUGE. It broke windows a hundred kilometers away from the center of the blast. It measured 5.0 on the Richter scale. At least, that's what Wikipedia is telling me. Millions of trees were flattened.

There would thousands of dead people if today's meteor had been as big as Tunguska's.

Yeah, but just think how cool it would be to reveal your scar and have someone ask "How'd you get that?" and be able to say "Oh tovarishch, I was hit by ********ing METEORITE!"

Neil Degrasse Tyson said these probably happen every 5-10 years, but the odds are they will happen over open water or over unpopulated/sparsely populated areas so no one knows. He pointed out that it was too small to register (or track before it "hit") if it hadn't happened right above a city like it did, we wouldn't have noticed it either.

Well with cellphone penetration many with video capabilities, I would expect that unless it happens over a desert or an ocean (the poles) going forward there will be more and more videos of the events.

Russian news agency is now reporting that a bare-chested Putin wrestled the alien space rock from the sky and pinned it against Mother Russia until it tapped out.

Well, let's just say the meteor hit and actually did some "armageddon-style" damage...
Yeah, I'd want a few guns and some ammo around.
    Just sayin'. ;)

I hate that people are talking about the Armageddon asteroid hitting this planet. Was the movie that terrible that people forget what happened? The asteroid got destroyed. It never hit Earth. Ben Affleck lived to make Paycheck.
