The Heritage Cup webpage is now available on the Soccer Silicon Valley Community Foundation site just in time for tomorrow's game between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders FC. The page is still under construction, but you will find the competition rules, the Heritage Cup Logo and a conceptual drawing for the Heritage Cup (currently in production). Special thanks go out to the SSV (particularly Don G & webmaster Sarah Stevenson), the Emerald City Supporters (particularly Heather[H]), and the Earthquakes front office. Check it out.

This is great. One little nit on the rules:

"5(b) The supporters for the prevailing MLS team shall be responsible for purchasing an engraved tag on the Heritage Cup with the year and name of the prevailing eligible MLS team for that year"

Shouldn't the supporters of the team that doesn't win the cup pay for the engraving? Or is that rubbing it in too much? (or leaving the possibility of a "typo" too wide open).

    Just a thought?

Is the term "supporters" being used to describe general fans, or are you referring to the Ultras 1906/Casaba in San Jose, and the ECS in Seattle?

As far as I know, the ECS has not talked about being involved in this.

I anticipate that there were will be a limited number of supporters from each side, say four or five, on the pitch, for the presentation on August 2.

From the Quakes side, we have four supporters groups (SSV, Club Quake, the Casbah, and the 1906 Ultras), and I would anticipate a rep from each, plus perhaps a former NASL Quake or two.

As for ECS, Heather has worked closely with us on this from the outset, since last May, as I recall, and she's posted periodic progress reports on the ECS boards. It's also been chronicled on the GoalSeattle site.

Where can I find myself a see-through globe like that?

Good idea for the cup, though.

FYI.... The former members of the NASL San Jose Earthquakes are going to host a reunion on the weekend of August 2nd in San Jose.

Over 60 former NASL Earthquake players and over 30 former staff members will be on hand at the match to determine the 2009 "Heritage Cup" winners! The former Earthquakes will also be honored at halftime and on hand when the trophy is presented to the winning team at the conclusion of the match...

Thanks to SSV and the supporters groups in Seattle for creating and implementing such an awesome award and for your recognition of the NASL! It is VERY much appreciated!

Soccer Silicon Valley is reportedley paying $4200 to have this trophy made, so, I guess it will only be fitting for the Seattle fans to pay for engraved tags for the forseeable future.:p

It is fine. Remember this is Big Soccer where the word critical and everyone has an opinion becomes prevelant. ;)

The Heritage Cup was cast last week, and has just finished go through a patina process. The cup was lost-wax cast in solid bronze and weighs 15.5lbs! The base is still under construction, but I thought you all would appreciate a looks at the cup going into the game this weekend. The image has also been updated on the Soccer Silicon Valley Foundation website.

I hope to see many of you in San Jose for the presentation in August!

    Because of the lopsided schedule.

    Nice work on the cup.
It will have a nice safe home in Seattle after 8/2/09 :D

We'll folks, I picked it up yesterday. The Heritage Cup can be viewed on the Soccer Silicon Valley Community Foundation's website. It weighs around 36 pounds, is 28 inches high, and the cup diameter is 9 inches.

I will be marching into the game this Saturday with the Ultras holding the Heritage Cup.

Never mind the haters. I think what you are doing is great. I especially love the bronze casting.

    Awesome work!
