The great 2018 schedule shuffle

Discussion in 'NWSL' started by SiberianThunderT, Dec 20, 2017.

  1. Always a good time when Fire & Timbers support get together. Too bad Sam Kerr probably won't play so you could see the the reigning MLS & NWSL Golden Boot winners on the same field with the same ticket.

Per Steve Goff, schedule release has been pushed back a day.

Well, at least having a definite date is better than not having an ETA at all, right?

No official announcement yet, but the schedule is now live on the website:
    http://www.nwslsoccer.com/schedule?season=2018&team=&month=all

People on Twitter all freaking out that NWSL preempted its own announcement... As someone who runs the website for an organization myself, (my orchestra's page,) I know having things online - and working - before you announce them is important, though the gap between upload and announce should definitely not be too big, depending on how visible your organization is.

Will be fun digging through this... Lots of midweek games, obviously. Looks like the Spirit get the bye on the final week of the season.

Hmm... Only had a cursory glance at each team thus far, but it looks like there won't be any back-to-back same-opponent game pairs this year for any team. That's a nice little accomplishment.

Looks like the TV schedule is built around 4 cities: Chicago, Orlando, Portland, and Utah.

I'm pleased with the Courage's schedule. There is very little congestion with both games and opponents. Playing the same team in consecutive weeks is not fun, and there isn't any of that.

Now here's an interesting tibdit I haven't seen reported elsewhere yet!
    https://www.blackandredunited.com/w...2018-nwsl-schedule-optimal-planning-solutions

Interesting to hear stories from the inner workings of scheduling a sports league. I think a lot of the details are things that have been mentioned before, but just up a level or three apparently!

    Also, this:

Not sure that's a fair assessment of the work load. I doubt the schedule for the remaining 9 teams changed much so ur really only talking about scheduling 24 matches and inserting 24 byes.

I do not have specific experience with sports but for the last 10 years I've worked as a developer creating scheduling solutions for a wide ranging number of industries. From that experience alone I can tell you it really should not take more than 2-3 days especially if it is a company that have done sports scheduling before.

Yes, the Timbers/Thorns already are giving some love to the double-header.

...shit, you know what else I just realized?

Remember that awesome Chicago/Portland double-header we were all excited about? It's this weekend. This weekend is also the NCAA BBall Final Four - and Loyola-Chicago is the Cinderella story of the tournament right now.

Hopefully there is relatively little crossover between Chicago Fire fans and Loyola-Chicago fans. Otherwise, you may get more people than expected leaving after the Fire/Timbers game to watch BBall and not stay for the Red Stars/Thorns. =-/ Curse you, Loyola-Chicago for having a good run at the wrong time!
