It’s more of the fact we should’ve had about 3-4 of those since 2011. We had great rosters but were totally in our heads. Yesterday was a masterclass and it looked like they were toying around in the 2nd half.
Mexico was toying with them lol If our guys like have been a bit more composed and took advantage of all the clear chances they had, the score line would have been worse than the 2009 Gold Cup final
Playing a high line and using your GK as a sweeper means the team will be susceptible to line breaking passes and in this respect, I thought Reyes had a very good game. His anticipation was on point and he formed a very good partnership with Sanchez and released Tecatito into space quite a few times with lofted balls behind Dest. Obviously watching the game live gives you a different perspective than watching on tv with the added bias of commentators who highlight certain plays and build up narratives, both good and bad. If you look at Salcedo, Moreno, Araújo and Reyes individually, you’ll see where each one excels and where their deficiencies lie and I can almost guarantee the fact that we will be seeing quite a bit more of Reyes now that he’s back in Mexico. Luckily for us, Tata is a level headed dude and will certainly apply the correct context to each player’s performance. One minor note regarding the opponent. I was at the friendly in Nashville last year and commented on the fact that several of these young players the US has coming through are about as average as one can imagine and the poster boy for this is Weston McKinnie. I truly don’t know what people see in him. He was completely dominated by Herrera, Guardado and Charly. Individually and collectively. At one point he pushed forward and tried to pressure both Reyes and Moreno and they had no problem getting by him when they needed to. Aside from one clear run where he galloped into open space, he was generally anonymous. Which is par for the course so far in his career vs Mexico.
I watched the game twice and I rarely saw anything threatening from McKinney. However, even more bizarre, I can’t remember a SINGLE Zardes play. It was like he wasn’t even on the field. For someone who is excelling with Columbus, I expected a little more firepower. He was beyond a ghost.
Zardes reminds me of Zaldivar, limited mobility and completely reliant on service. Imagine that, Zaldivar as our starting #9. We can empathize with US fans in this regard. That’s not fun.
I swear to god, I missed the start of the game and all the pregames because I was watching the Mexico vs Japan game, so I missed the starting lineups. I didn't know Zardes was playing until he got subbed out. I swear it.
I read the first few pages of the nads' game thread and a good chunk of the comments were about how useless Zardes was.
Gyasi Zardes’ game-low SIX first-half touches. Yes, the arrow is pointing the proper direction. No, this isn’t all his fault. pic.twitter.com/sxwQpN2HBD— Paul Carr (@PaulCarr) September 7, 2019
Not much else to add... I was trying to find an old post of mine where I highlighted the fact that with the Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley, et al generation retiring, the US had a gap in talent, Mexico has talent spread out throughout more generations... it showed badly Friday... and gringos better pray hard, sell their soul so that Pulisic does not have a bad injury ever, without Pulisic I can cook an 11 side out of the RTT thread (not even the footy side of BSMX) and be competitive against a Pulisic-less NAD team... Even with Pulisic, that Donovan leadership and grit is missing... Hopefully this does not last, CONCACAF can only get better collectively, if Mexico misses 3 clear ones, makes a few mistakes in the back and still manages to win 3-0, that's not good in the long run. /p
Couldn't disagree more. Mexico needs to do better on its own regardless of a CONCACAF team where A) most of it will never grow to the potential required and B) the one side that has the potential, has more potential and would leave Mexico in the dust if it ever grows. The US becoming crap at soccer would be a dream and unfortunately it shouldn't last.
I don’t give a shit about the rest of CONCACAF So just because the Nads are sucking ass this should not affect Mexico
Mexico hasn't looked any better or any worse with CONCACAF sucking or doing well. So the notion that we get better based on CONCACAF being more competitive doesn't really pan out because it hasn't in the past.
So, you don't buy into CONMEBOL being a better fit for the long term growth of the NT? What about players competing in Europe/CL being a driver of improvement?
