Congratulations to both you and Gerd.

Interestingly, if I read the compilation right and if my memory serves correctly, Gerd has never played on US soil. The sixties and early seventies saw a great number of matches, especially in New York, played by the likes of Inter, Napoli, Boca, River, Independiente, Racing and, above all, Santos with Pele. There were visits by Hungarian, Polish, English, Scotish and Irish clubs followed by the Bi-Centennial Tournament in 1976 headlined by Italy, England and Brazil. Alas, no Bayern, no West Germany and no Gerd.

Incorrect. Gerd played for the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers for 3 years...I believe '79, '80, and '81.

He was pretty fat and slow by 1980, but could still score goals!

He actually had a spell with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers after he left Bayern.

edit - jri just beat me to it. I'm pretty sure that he didn't have the greatest of times in the US and that he didn't part company with his team on the best of terms.

    Thank you.

I guess you meant Müller never played on US soil when he was with Bayern and/or the German NT? As has been pointed out, he played on US soil from '79 to '82.

Unfortunately, he never played in North America at the peak of his career. He did play in South America, though, but only in friendlies for Bayern.

Obviously most players are going to score more goals at home than away, but how does this split compare with some of the other great goal-scorers?

I don't have the league stats but at international level I compared him with with the two other European players with over 60 international goals, Ferenc Puskas (for Hungary only) and Sandor Kocsis.

    Muller 62 caps 68 goals (1.10 goals/game)
    Home 34 caps 40 goals (1.18 goals/game)
    Away 21 caps 16 goals (0.76 goals/game)
    Neutral 7 caps 12 goals (1.71 goals/game)

    Puskas 85 caps 84 goals (0.99 goals/game)
    Home 31 caps 33 goals (1.06 goals/game)
    Away 46 caps 43 goals (0.93 goals/game)
    Neutral 8 caps 8 goals (1.00 goals/game)

    Kocsis 68 caps 75 goals (1.10 goals/game)
    Home 27 caps 32 goals (1.19 goals/game)
    Away 31 caps 26 goals (0.84 goals/game)
    Neutral 10 caps 17 goals (1.70 goals/game)

Obviously this doesn't take into account the standard of opposition played, but it does provide one very interesting result. Remarkably, Kocsis and Muller have almost identical goals per game ratios and splits throughout their international careers. Puskas is a bit different, with an almost uniform record wherever he played, but I suspect this is the exception rather than the rule.

it sounds like alot of stars players including Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Zoff, Gerd etc went to US to play at that time, did they make more money than if they played for the Euro clubs ? obviously we have experienced in signing big time players so, why can't MLS does the same ? attracts stars players like Beckham, Totti, Ronaldo ?

i do not see what you see....the only big difrence is the scores on neutral places. ..neutral means not at home...neutral means this are important tournament games...(worldcup ,europeanchampionship ..ect)..and there was kokcis and müller superb..

Thanks for these numbers. The similarities between Kocsis and Müller are striking. And it is astounding that Müller scored 65% of his competitive goals (for Bayern and Germany) at home.

58% of his goals for Germany were scored at home. Puskas scored 51% of his goals at home (for Hungary), and Kocsis only 43%!!!

What does this tell us? Maybe that Bayern and Germany were a very dominant team when they played at home, and less threatening at away games?

Muller also played 55% of his internationals at home, Puskas 39% (and I get 39% of his goals) and Kocsis 39%, hence the disparity.

I do think that Bayern (and Germany) would be a much bigger threat when playing at home as the opposition often tends to give more respect to their hosts (often playing deeper) and this would afford Beckenbauer in particular much more creative freedom. With the onus on the home team, when Bayern came to town perhaps they often found themselves playing more defensive.

in important WC,EC,WC-Q,EC-Q... games gerd müller has scored 39 goals in 33 games (1.18 gpg)..in lesser important friendly games he has scored 29 goals in 29 games (1.00 gpg)....

in his 62 games for germany gerd müller has scored 47.5 % of team germanys goals (68-143)....puskas has scored in his 85 games for hungary 25% of team hungarys goals (84-339)....

Ah, that is why. You`re right, Puskas scored 39% of his goals at home. I mistakenly took Puskas' away goals.

Valid points. But then again it is not so easy to score at home if the guest team is playing extremely defensively (a lot of lesser teams played like that in the Bundesliga during the early 70s, I remember articles in Kicker from the time, where they discuss possible reasons for the serious lack of attendance in Germany during the early-70s; one being that teams play too defensively at away games).

knows somebody here on this forum one striker where has scored in his nationalteam games more than 40 % of his his teams total goals???

i knows only 1 other striker than gerd müller worldwide where has over 40 %..this is famous JUST FONTANE where has scored in 21 games 30 goals of france total 70 goals in this 21 games....

müller has scored 47.5% (62 games,68goals,total goals team germany 143)
    fontane has scored 42.5 %(21 games,30 goals,total goals team france 70)

its nearly unbelievable that 1 striker has scored nearly 50 % of the total goals of his nationalteam in a timespan of 8 years......

Surely that would suggest that the French side of that era was fairly limited in terms of goal scoring.

how important gerd müller was for bayern munich confirm this statistc from the german liga seasons 1975-76 and 1976-77...in both years gerd müller was injured and hasent played a lot of games...

    ------

bayern munich 1975-76 (3 place) 5 points behind german champion gladbach.

    34 games,15 wins,10 draws,9 losses,72:50 goals,40-28 points

bayern with müller (23 müller goals):

    22 games,11 wins,8 draws,3 losses,53:26 goals,30-14 points

    bayern without müller:

    12 games,4 wins,2 draws,6 losses,19:24 goals,10-14 points

    -----------

bayern munich 1976-77 (7 place) 7 points behind german champion gladbach.

    34 games,14 wins,9 draws,11 losses,74:65 goals,37-31 points

bayern with müller (28 müller goals):

    25 games,12 wins,7 draws,6 losses,69:51 goals,31:19 points

    bayern without müller:

    9 games,2 wins,2 draws,5 losses,5:14 goals,6-12 points

    --------------

no question , müller was the most important player for bayern munich and his injury has cost bayern munich maybe the german championship 75-76 and maybe the 76-77 championship too....bayern has scored ONLY 5 goals in this 9 games (without müller) season 76-77 ....unbelievable..

70 divided by 21 is over 3 goals per game- that's not unusually bad.
Fontaine also holds the record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup- he scored 13 in the 1958 World Cup. What's interesting is that before the tournament he wasn't a guaranteed regular and in fact only made the squad due to the injury of another player.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Germany's 1974 FIFA World Cup™ final victory over the Netherlands, German scorers Paul Breitner and Gerd Müller took a fascinatinglook back to that momentous day with FIFAworldcup.com. Breitner cancelled out Holland's early opener from the penalty spot before 'Der Bomber' struck the decisive second.
Paul Breitner, Gerd Müller, how did Germany succeed in overcoming favourites the Netherlands?
Breitner: Before the match, we could hear the Dutch singing and shouting in the next-door dressing room, they were pretty sure they were going to win. If we'd been short of the aggression we needed before that, it wasn't missing afterwards. We ended up world champions because up until half-time at least, the Dutch failed to grasp the fact they could have dominated us on the day. They failed to add to their early lead, nor did they have it in them to equalise later. One of the basic truths in football is that you'll be punished for carelessness, it happens over and over again. The Dutch could still be playing today and they wouldn't have scored again, that's the way it is.

Müller: We were terrible in our first three matches but we pulled ourselves together after that. We went behind early in the final, but we still had plenty of time to turn the match round. When referee Taylor pointed to the spot so early in the game I thought to myself, if someone goes down, he'll give us one too. And the Dutch were overconfident, simple as that. My goal before half-time was vital, of course, and I actually put us 3-1 ahead, but the ref disallowed it for an alleged offside. Just before the final whistle there was a situation where we should have had another penalty, although the first one was definitely debatable. At the end of the day you have to say we were lucky because the Dutch played very well, but Sepp Maier made some brilliant saves, just like he had against Poland.
Talk us through your goals again.
Breitner: The ref blew for our penalty and the ball was rolling towards the corner flag. I was the nearest, and Uli Hoeneß had missed from the spot against Poland, so without thinking too hard I grabbed the ball. I was certain I'd find the back of the net. Keeper Jongbloed made a movement to his left so the other side was open and inviting, that's where I aimed and I scored the equaliser. When I watched the scene on TV the following day, I thought to myself, 'you idiot, what are you doing taking a penalty?' but like I say, I was certain I'd find the back of the net.

Müller: Bonhof and Grabowski did the build-up work down the right flank. The ball bounced a metre away off my foot when I first went for it, but I reached the loose ball first, spun, hit it, and it went in, it was as simple as that. Scoring the goal that won the World Cup was the absolute high point of my career, even though I'd managed more goals four years earlier in Mexico.

Was the first round defeat to the DDR actually helpful?
Breitner: There are some things you can't prove, but we do think that defeat helped us, although even now I can't really explain our dramatic improvement afterwards. You may be right and it's what I've always maintained, but we don't have the evidence for the opposing point of view. We were fortunate to take on the Poles in torrential rain on a waterlogged pitch, as I don't know if we'd have been good enough to beat that Polish side in normal conditions.

Müller: At the end of the day I think it was a helpful defeat, although obviously it didn't feel like it at the time. We were very poor in our first three games, but then against Yugoslavia and Sweden and right through to the end, we got better and better.

What were the wider implications of winning the 1974 FIFA World Cup?
Breitner: Football was quite a sober business in 1974, although the current interpretation, that we didn't really enjoy it back then, is wrong. We'd had the Bundesliga and professionalism for eleven years, so it's true we all went into the tournament conscious of our responsibilities, but our passion and that of the fans was just as intense then as after any World Cup triumph before or since.
Müller: I don't think you can compare 1974 with 1954 in any way. You had basically an amateur tournament way back then, with the possible exception of a couple of Hungarians, so we definitely had an advantage over the previous generations. But I have to say my fondest memories are linked to the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, all the nations there were superb and every single team featured exceptional, world-class players. This is a personal opinion, but I believe our 1970 World Cup team was better than the 1972 European Championship-winning side, although some may choose to disagree.

Why are so many of the 1974 winners still working in the game?
Breitner: It's not confined to the class of '74, you've got any number of former stars working as coaches or whatever -- Jürgen Kohler for example. It's always the same: a few players take a look around and decide they want to stay in the business, although you also get folk like me who arrive at a point in time where you say, thank the Lord my playing days are over, I don't want anything to do with it any more, just enough to stay in touch. But definitely not as national or Bundesliga coach or manager.
Müller: I think it's a good thing that a lot of former players stay in the game, and I know that's very much the case at Bayern München, but it's true at other clubs and it's independent of the function you take on. Football was all we ever thought about, it's our life and it always will be.
